“Maintenance needed!”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

This museum could be actually very nice. The building is impressive villa but it really need some maintenance and cleaning. Windows and cartoons were closed which made all rooms really dark. Layers of dust covered all displayed items. Some labels were in Turkish and English; some were in Turkish only; some were mixed up in between different items and some were even turned up-side down... :)

“An excellent sample for civic architecture for Trabzon”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

The museum is worth visiting to see how rich and famous once lived in Trabzon. The building it self is very nice although the display of artifacts are out of date and need tobe upgraded. The archeological pieces in the basement also gives the same boring feeling as a museum

“Not just one more museum”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Visiting the Red Sea for three weeks we thought we had seen all the archeological museums to be seen. In fact the Trabzon museum is interesting in itself as it is located in a beautifully decorated early 20th century mansion. The ethnography section is not as interesting as the archeology museum where you will see a nice statue of Hermes and discover a few writings on the war-making in the region by Xenophon...Original.

“A small museum but not uninteresting”
Reviewed April 9, 2012

The museum is housed in a mansion in the centre of town built in an Italian style. The rooms are decorated in the original style and some rooms contain additional artefacts which are miscellaneous and poorly signed.

In the basement is an archaeological section with some interesting Christian paintings.

“One or two interesting pieces, in a nice old merchant's house.”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

This museum is in an old merchant's house from the start of the 20th C (Russian, I think), and is worth visiting to see the Turko-Russian decor in its own right. The object on display are mostly of passing interest, with the exception of a spectacular bronze of Hermes on display in the basement. There is also a fabulously kitsch tapesty of the Shah of Iran presented to Turkey on the infamous 2500th anniversary of Iran.
