“Learned to sail at this stunning hotel”
Reviewed June 1, 2011

We have just returned from the imperial, a beautiful location overlooking hillsides, marina and enclosed bay. Large well equiped rooms in blocks of four set in the hillside amongst pine trees, on the edge of National Parkland. (Steps as explained in brochure) Bedrooms kept very clean with good bathroom and shower, beds a little firm.
We decided to pay for some saling tution and booked a three day course with Sidat and his team. Sidat proved to be an excelent instructor and soon had us sailing a catamaran on our own. By the end of our holiday we came away very proud with a basic certificate to sail not bad for a couple of oldies (56 & 59) We have Sidat and team to thank for making our holiday the start of a new hobby.
The two a la carte and buffet restaurants are excelent with plenty of choice and freshly cooked foods. The desserts are delicious too.
The evening entertainment could have been more varied but we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere listening to the resident duo Rooze. If you want all night discos and foam parties it would be best to stay in Marmaris.
We have never gone back to the same place but are considering booking for next year.

We are totally disappointed with Thomson for not informing us what the changes has been put in place,

Evening entertainment was shocking, a duet called Rooze should be Called Snooze, Im no singer, the female singer could only sing in a 2 tone voice (flat as) SHOCKING... I have heard better at a kids Karaoke party. The Latin band well, even the local cats stayed away!

The Activity pool....ha this was a joke, there was louder music and activity in the restaraunt. Make sure you take a ipod or MP3 player with you..... oh the most activity the pool had was when somebody done a number 2 in the pool, it was like watching CSI in turkey HA.

The local drinks are not the best, drank lots in the day but no effect!!! unless you drink it neat you will be ok

food was utter rubbish in the way of choice, cooked well though!!! No bacon in the mornings until a sunday... whats this all about! breakfast was the same every morning

Waiter service was not great at all.....the language barrier was a big issue. I asked for water then i get rose wine. At the dinner table the service was slow for drinks but quick enough to swipe your plate when its empty.

One evening there is a Managesr meeting for an hour where guests can give feed back to the hotel managers, You might as well speak to a brick wall, its like a sea of nodding dogs!

We meet a fair few people on this holiday who was not happy with the entertainment, food, the attitude of the hotel staff and thomson rep.

Room Tip: Book another hotel with lifts and great comfort

This is not an easy review to write as I love the Thomson Couples concept & was really looking forward to a holiday without children being present! However I feel that this hotel is a 'Work in Progress' at present and you will be better able to judge it in a couple of months when the present teething troubles that I feel it has, will hopefully be sorted out !
GETTING THERE
The transfer to the hotel went smoothly enough although the journey took a couple of hours both to & from the airport & we were the only drop off !This isnt helped by the 'comfort stop' half way which in my opinion is just an excuse to try & get you to buy more gifts etc that you can get cheaper locally in Marmaris !Check in was quite quick although no welcome drink was offered & we were then taken by buggy to our room.
I was fully aware of the number of steps at this hotel before we went & tried to email the hotel to reserve a room on a lower level . However I was unable to obtain a new email address following the change from Club Magic to Marmaris Imperial ,either from Club Magic or Thomsons (the new owners being the Tiu Group as I understand it ).I then tried ringing 'Special Needs ' at Thomsons but could never get through & the local Thomsons travel agents wouldnt help me either as I had booked on line. Finally ,after several emails to Thomsons Head Office I did get a reply saying they would notify the hotel with my booking details !This never happened as the room we were finally allocated wasnt in block 100, which is where the rooms on the lowest level are situated !However our room was on the next level up & we were always able to use the golf buggy if we wanted to to get 'back home'so it wasnt a real problem in the end .Curiously enough I asked reception for the hotels new email address when we got there as I know fellow TA users wanted it, but was told they havent got one & I would need to go through Thomsons, would you believe that in 2011 !TIP If you have walking difficulties then do ask for the golf buggies- they run up til midnight from reception & are a great way to get around.
The mix of guests has changed this year following the switch to Thomsons Couples. Not only are there no children but the majority of guests are from the UK .The views from this hotel are stunning & the grounds themselves superbly kept- the pictures dont do it justice !
ROOM
The room itself was clean with a great view of the 'relax pool', the sea & the hills/mountains in the distance. The rooms have lovely showers ,a sitting area, plenty of drawer space ,good size balcony with chairs & the safe is 1 euro per day .Our bed sheet was quite small but this was changed after a couple of days . The towels were changed regularly and the shampoo & gel dispensers were topped up when required. We had bathrobes but no slippers however they were provided after a couple of days as was a 'Do not disturb 'card !The fridge is also topped up with water on a daily basis but no soft drinks or beer !
POOLS
We are both quite short & are not very good swimmers so we could not use the relax pool which is 1.4 metres all round whereas the activity pool is 1.2 metres at the shallow end , so that was our base camp ! We had no trouble getting very comfortable sunbeds at any time & there seemed to be plenty ( there is supposed to be a ' no reservation before 8am 'rule but this didnt appear to be adhered to by either the pool men or guests). There are also loads of beds on the beach & the decked areas.
FOOD AND DRINK
The buffet restaurant was very good with a wide selection of food on offer. There were several theme nights including the Chinese/Asian which was excellent. Strangely enough the Italian night wasnt up to par with no spaghetti, pizza or lasagna on offer ( we told the restaurant manager about this so hopefully this will be corrected shortly). The waiters were a mix of youngsters & more experienced staff. We felt the younger staff were not fully trained so tables were not cleared very quickly but this will no doubt be corrected as the season goes on & they become more efficient. As the service is quite slow you can always get your own drinks at the drinks stations, including red/white wine which is very good or water etc.As well as the main buffet restaurant there is a snack restaurant ( the Mediteranean restaurant in the evenings ), which is open between 2-4 & offering burgers, pizza etc.
In additition to the usual fare there was a Black & White Gala dinner but apart from the black & white table cloths there was no difference to any other night !
The a la carte restaurants however are a different story ! I am afraid that Thomsons have again got it wrong as they say in their brochures that you can only use them both once per holiday . This was confirmed in an email I received from them also before we went away. However you can in fact use both restaurants once per week without charge! We tried both the Mediteranean & the Turkish & what a contrast ! The Turkish was superb- 5 courses & great service , well worth a visit . The Mediteranean wasnt worth the visit- luke warm food & dire service ( the waiters didnt know which table had ordered what & a long wait between courses). We were not the only guests to complain about this to the Thomsons rep. so hopefully things will improve !
The waiters clear the empty glasses quite quickly but dont ask you if you want to order another drink. To be fair we never had to wait at the bar to order a drink but surprisingly you couldnt get rum ( 3 euros )or whiskey without paying for it. In addition the All Inclusive drinks stop at midnight !There are tip boxes in the restaurants & bars so no need to tip individually unless you feel it is warranted.
I spoke to many guests who had been on the Cruise & Stay holiday & most of them were disapointed with the service at this hotel compared with the cruise that they had enjoyed the week before.
MANAGEMENT COCKTAIL PARTY.
There is a weekly cocktail party at the Relax pool where guests have the chance to meet the Management & air their views. We attended this & found it a complete waste of time ! The Management greeted you when you arrived & then ignored us from then on in ! In fact the hotel Manager couldnt even be bothered to turn up ! It is interesting to note that there are pictures in reception of ALL the Management team except the hotel Manageress ! The best member of the Management Team in my opinion seemed to be the Restaurant manager who made a point of saying hello to everyone in the restaurants every day & was also often around the bars etc chatting to the guests.
TRIPS
We only went to the the Turkish Baths which was well worth the £10 price. We wanted to do a boat trip but were not prepared to pay Thomsons £33 pp for it . Incidently several guests said that when the Thomsons boat picked them up it was nearly full so they were left with the worst spots on board to sunbathe.
ENTERTAINMENT
Where do I begin ! The Animation Team consists of 2 people which is totally inadequate for a hotel of this size. They have apparantly been told not to be too pushy when they approach guests to join in ,hence most events are poorly supported. However there did seem to be more people playing Bochia, Darts & Mini Golf in our second week so maybe things will improve! In fact on our first week one quest organised 2 Pub Quizzes himself for other holidaymakers to give them something to do !
The Events Organiser ( who should I feel have organised these quizzes herself) , works for Thomsons & is completely anonymous .She doesnt seem to get involved in anything that is going on! The only time she got involved with the guests was when it rained one day & she did a Pub Quiz & guess what - the questions were the same ones that the guest asked the previous week !
The Ampitheatre is only used twice a week when films are shown (Casablanca & The Good, The Bad & The Ugly were the 2 offerings on our first week so need I say more ! ). This is a total waste of this facility & we were told by the Thomsons rep that this will be the format for this Summer season which is really disapointing for future guests. On 2 other evenings there was a Magic Show & a Turkish Dance act both of which were on the stage next to the Breezes Bar. Both shows were pretty amateurish & you couldnt see or hear what was going on unless you were near to the stage as the lighting etc was poor.
There was also a weekly Party on the Pier but there was no atmosphere when we went & we felt a lot more could have been done to make this a memorable evening.
In addition there is a resident duo called Rooze who play live about 5 evenings a week on the stage. The male guitarist is very talented & the female singer is also quite good at what she does in my opinion. They cover a wide range of music from the 50's up to date . However I feel that they dont do enough to get people up dancing. They encourage people to dance but then play something from the Shadows or GunsnRoses & of course get no response.I think they should do their guitar solos & requests etc in their early sets then in their late set concentrate on music that will get people on the dance floor.
CONCLUSION
This hotel was number 1 in Marmaris at the end of 2010 but this year has already fallen to 21 ! I am afraid that unless Thomsons up their game then this drop will continue ! It is a great pity as the hotel setting is fabulous & with a little tweeking, particularly on the entertainment side ,it could be a really great holiday centre again but this time for Couples. Hopefully Thomsons look at the reviews on TA, which this year have been very varied to say the least ! I know that you cant please all the punters all the time but I do believe ,having spoken to a cross section of people who were staying here at the same time as us that all is not lost yet ! I would definatly recommend this hotel, as it stands to Couples who want a quiet holiday in a great location. However it isnt suitable for those who want a fun filled ,action packed time or if you have walking difficulties !

Room Tip: Email Thomsons with your request beforehand.

Overall we had a good holiday but the Marmaris Imperial (previously the Club Magic Life) was a far cry from the glowing reports in the brochure. The fantastic location, views and exclusive beach make up for the poor management of the resort. Yes it is around 8km from Marmaris town and little else in between but this is clearly described in the brochure and I am sure most travellers will take a look on Google earth beforehand. However this hotel is nowhere near the standard of a 5 star hotel as per the official rating. This hotel with new management and exclusive the new Thomson Couples was 2 weeks into the season and was obvious Thomson and the management were not prepared.
Firstly, the rooms were a fairly basic 3 star quality that would not have been a problem apart from the appalling housekeeping that raised a daily joke amongst all the guests. How the maids can consistently make up a king size bed with single sheets that do not meet the sides I do not know, then the 2 measly sachets of coffee that were often not replaced and to top that they even washed up the wooden stirring sticks. In the end after 4 complaints we gave up, took sheets from the maid’s linen store and made our own bed.
Then there was the food - a reasonable choice but fairly basic and repetitive even on so called themed nights. The alcohol was also very limited - the light wine, vodka, gin, raki and a reasonable EFES beer was all that was on offer.
The entertainment was just a waste of time, a drab British duo consisting of a male guitarist and a female vocalist that had no rapport with the audience that would be better suited to a village pub. To top this off there was a very annoying photographer that popped out from nowhere at all times of the day, at the beach, in the bar, around the pool, at the dining hall and continued to snap away even when we clearly said no. Obviously you could buy the photos for a mere 6 quid a piece.
And if you are not satisfied, don’t bother complaining to the on-site Thomson Rep, she was just dismissive and said it will be alright when the new manager arrives.

Room Tip: Higher bungalows are not for the unhealthy.

This was a holiday of a lifetime! We booked this hotel because of the reviews that we had read and we wanted to go somewhere nice as it was for our honeymoon and we had never been abroad together!
When we turned up in our coach, all the staff were there waiting for us to arrive because we were the first coach to arrive, they were waving and so excited that we had arrived. When we got to the reception we had cocktails waiting for us, our bags were taken up to our rooms and then we were taken up in the golf buggies, which was a bit of a trip and a half!!!
We arrived at our room, and it was beautiful, clean, tidy and a lovely view, we also had two love hearts made from towels on our bed with flowers all around, it was lovely that they had made so much effort!
All the staff were fantastic, especially Mustafar and Sohail who work in the buffet restaurant, they could not do enough for us!
The service and the food was lovely, different things every day and night! I would definately recomment the Turkish Al La Carte, the food was beautiful!
The pool and the beach were great, the only problem we had was getting a sunbed because everyone else went down at the crack of dawn to put there towel on the sunbed then go out for the rest of the day!
The entertainment was good, the duet were excellent and really enjoyed those nights, the rest of the entertainment was ok but nothing to write home about.
We went to the spa and had a turkish bath, a massage and a facial, which was lovely but the guy tries to charge you alot for it to be done, dont take his first offer, also always go on your first or second day or there is no point in going!
We also went on one of Thomson's excursions to the mud baths, turtle beach and the tombs. The mud baths were fun but you only had an hour to get dressed cover yourself in mud, dry, wash off, get in the salt hot bath and then get dressed. And also the salt hot bath stank like egg! But after your skin was nice and soft.
The tombs were great for taking pictures but our tour guide went on a bit about the history etc and it got a bit boring by the end.
Turtle beach was good, didnt see many turtles but was lovely to sit and relax before getting back to the boat.
Before you get to Dalayan for the trip they took us to a carpet place, i wasnt sure if we were suppost to stop, but we did! If you dont want to buy a carpet dont tell them you like them because they take you into a room on your own and try and bargain with you!
The food was horrible but then you will eat anything when your hungry and it is included in the trip! They change for drinks though and they are expensive!
Over all our honeymoon holiday was FANTASTIC! We didnt want to leave!
We are looking to go back next year, just need to save up!

Tranfers
Horrendous journey taking approx 1 hour 30 mins. Some roads still being constructed. All 36 passengers were for Marmaris imperial so only the one stop except for a 15 minute comfort stop. This comfort stop happens on inward and outward travel. The outward journey we were taken by mini bus to a car park where we had to wait for a bus to take us to the airport. We were only on the bus for 15 minutes when we had the comfort stop.

Hotel arrival.
On arrival at hotel given the usual form to complete with personal and passport dtails.
Information given at reception was very poor. No hotel map or info given. Once you are given a room number your suitcases are numbered and placed on a buggy for the porters to deliver to your room. On asking for directions to our room we were told that way. We went looking for the room but could not find it. Whilst looking several other couples were having the same problem. We stopped a buggy loaded with suitcases and again asked the porter for directions. This time we were offered a lift on the buggy and taken to our room. If we had known the porter would of taken us by buggy to our room from reception.

The room
Lovely room one of the best we have stayed in. Nice sea view although partially blocked by a tree. Fridge with bottled water. Fresh water replaced daily. Tea and coffee facilities although you need to supply your own milk for the tea. Cleaned daily with both towels and sheets being changed on a daily basis. The beds are very hard which caused difficulty sleeping some nights. Yes the sheets are single sheets but if you ask the rep they will give you a second sheet, which we did. After this the maids always replaced the sheets with a double sheet. Slippers and dressing gowns left in room.

Yes there are numerous steps and steep pathways to get to your room. So for any one who has walking difficulties a low room needs to be requested. You can however get the buggies from reception or ring for one to collect you from your room.

Hotel surroundings

The hotel complex is quite large. Due to the lack of information given at reception we had to wander around the grounds to find out where things were. We arrived approx 4pm so the main restaurant was closed. We tried find somewhere to get something to eat. By the time we found out there was a snack bar on the beach this was also closed. We also was not told that the fridges in the breezes bar contained sandwiches. We did feel that this sort of information should of been given on arrival at reception.

The hotel surroundings are excellent and kept very clean and tidy. Lots of peacefull areas to sit or lounge in one of the hammocks doted around the grounds.

The hotel has its own small beach with free comfortable sun beds. Sunbeds are also doted around the sea front with steps leading down into the sea.

There are 2 swimming pools the breezes and the relax pool. The relax pool is the quietest and has its own bar. You need to reserve your sunbeds with towels before going for breakfast. If you dont you wont get one . This gos for both pools and also beach sunbeds. However they do police this and any towels placed before 8am are removed. Beach towels are provided and you can change them as often as you like. Make sure you are given your towel cards at reception as these are needed.

Table tennis, Archery, French bowels, tennis, canoes and a small gym are available free of charge.Other water activities are available at a charge ie Yaughting pedaloes etc.

Marmaris town is 8 kms away. The dolmus is every half an hour from the security gates. The sea bus is also available at 8 euros return. The surrounding area is ideal for those who like walking and seeing wild life. The entertainment rep does provide guided walking tours once or twice a week.

Restaurants

There is the main buffet restaurant with waiter service for drinks only. However due to the waiters being busy it was quicker to fetch your drinks. Food was very good (Not the best we have had on holiday). However there was always a resonable choice. Excellent soups and sweets. Several themed nights Chinese , Italian , Turkish etc.

There are 2 ala carte restaurants Turkish and Mediteranian. We had good meals at both and both are waiter service. You can book both restaurants once per week.

The mediteranian restaurant opens for snacks from 2-4 daily. Serves pitza, Burger, salads etc. A nice change from the the bigger buffet restaurant. Good for those who venture out during the day and miss the buffet restaurant at lunch which closes at 2 pm.
The beach snack bar also opens approx 11am and stays open untill 6pm.There are also fridges at the Breezes bar and the beach bar that contain sandwiches and are available most of the day.Midnight snacks are also advertised as available.

Bars and entertainment

There is only one bar available at night. This was not a problem untill the weather changed so it was to cold to sit outside. The room then became crowded and noisy. Entertainment consists of the resident duo 5 nights per week and turkish/belly dancers and a magic act on the other 2 nights. Beach bar and relax bar are open during the day untill 6pm. A party on the peir takes place every week.

Over all this is a nice clean hotel in a lovely setting. It is not suitable for those who want an active holiday with time spent outside the hotel surroudings as there are no bars or restaurants untill you reach Marmaris. Very suitable for couples who want a quiet relaxing time spent in the hotel complex.

We arrived early hours of the morning and transferred to our room by Golf Buggy due to the location of our room, so we were also surprised the following day when we saw the true beauty surrounding us. Mountain vistas, sea and beautifully kept gardens. It amazed me by the number of people that were not aware prior to arriving about the number of steps - yes there are loads, 87 to our room and we were one of the luckier ones!
Lots of areas to sit and lounge - hammocks, sandy beach, 2 pools and several bar areas. Everywhere was spotless and clean. The rooms were a good size with kingsize bed - yes a bit hard! Extra bedding/pillows in wardrobe and loads of coathangers, bathroom had a large shower cubicle with powerful shower & plenty of hot water. Rooms cleaned very well - sheets that were dry and fitted the bed and clean towels - whatever next!! Food was fantastic in the buffet restaurant - yes there was soup and bread!! However there were loads of salads, vegetarian dishes, meat, fish, etc loads of desserts too much to mention you will not get bored or starve with the food. Oh, how terrible we too didn't get that much of a drinks service how awful we had to get up and walk all of 10 yards to the nearest bar or drinks dispenser to help ourself! We ate in both al a carte restaurants and the service was excellent, one was mediterranian and the other Turkish. The Turkish restaurant is on the roof top above the buffet restaurant and there is also a bar up there which is open of an evening. There are snacks available throughout the day if you do not want to eat in the restaurant at lunchtime. Harmony restaurant serves burgers and pizzas and the Beach Bar serves several varieties of rolls and there is a lovely lady that sits making savoury and sweet Turkish Pancakes. Management was visible throughout the day and went around to every table every morning and evening to greet you - nice touch. We used the Spa where there is a free Turkish Bath and Sauna we also had massages which were excellent (payable). We feel totally chilled from this holiday, I think because it was adult only! The evening entertainment was pretty poor but did not spoil the holiday one bit. It rained on the day that we left and I just want to point out that they do have a Wet Day Programme in place now! PLEASE REMEMBER IF IT IS ENTERTAINMENT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR DAY & NIGHT THEN DON'T BOTHER GOING - THAT IS THE BEAUTY OF THIS HOTEL IT IS FOR THOSE THAT WANT TO CHILL & ENJOY THE SURROUNDINGS!
