Before you read this review please note this is for the restaurant/bar only as we did not stay in the hotel.
The Ekin Hotel is situated in the Armutalan area of Marmaris and is popular with several Trip Advisor regulars.
As we had been out all day and were tired we did not want to walk far and the Ekin is just a few yards from our hotel, the Club Evin.
We were given the choice of where to sit and picked an end table close the second pool and the apartments.
Those that know me will understand that when I write a review I am as honest as possible. I do not gloss over the cracks! This can be a bit of an embarrassment when a restaurant is recommended by a friend.
A couple of years ago a lady who I thought was a friend asked me to review her favourite restaurant down by the harbour. The meal was poor and I was honest and she has never forgiven me. But life goes on.
In the case of the Ekin Hotel I hope that our friend Alan (and others) will forgive me for reporting a couple of fairly minor flaws. I did discuss theses with Muammer, the manager and he said he would talk to the chef about them.
So the review.
Both Jean and I decided to order off of the set menu.
Jean ordered the vegetable soup and fillet steak. The steak is shown as being without sauce but she asked if she could have some mushroom sauce with it. They were more than happy to oblige.
On recommendation from another Trip Advisor regular, STEVIEDEBZ, I ordered the chicken soup.
This was to be followed by the sirloin steak. Both steaks were to be cooked medium. Pink but not bloody.
We had already ordered an Efes for me which was nice and cold and good as always (8 lira) and a glass of rosé for Jean. The rosé was light in colour but full in flavour and Jean said it was very good and at 8 lira it was not exorbitant.
We had almost finished these when the “free” meze arrived. This consisted of a basket of what we call “market” bread. The type you get for breakfast every morning and a favourite of ours. A plate with slices of the same bread toasted and two squares of “English” bread with a good coating of garlic and herbs, covered in cheese and toasted. These toasties were lovely and we could have ordered more if we were not having a big main course. On another plate were pats of butter and a small bowl of the spicy red dip. All very nice to nibble on as we finished our first drinks.
Following Jean’s advice I then ordered two glasses of rosé.
The previous glass had been one of the smaller wine glasses, but full to the brim. The fresh glasses were much bigger, filled past ½ way and definitely contained more wine than the first one. When we got the final bill these bigger offerings were down as our free drinks, which we thought to be “perfect”. In fact I was glad I followed Jean’s lead as the wine was very fruity and much to my taste.
We had said we were not in a hurry and so it was a short while before the soups arrived.
When they did they were generous portions and piping hot.
My chicken soup was very creamy, rich and full of small pieces of tender chicken. It was excellent and obviously made with care.
Jeans soup was also of a creamy texture and contained a lot of chopped fresh vegetables. The problem was that it was surprisingly tasteless! When Jean told me I was a bit sceptical as Jean’s taste buds are not very good; she suffers from allergies and hay fever. However, when I tasted it she was right. I am not sure how you can make a soup with fresh vegetables and cream and have it come out bland, but someone had managed it! Still Jean was hungry and managed to finish it off.
Again our wish to have a nice slow meal was respected and the mains were held back for a while.
When they came they were nicely presented. On each plate, with our steaks were some hand cut, fresh, beautifully cooked (real) chips. A dome of saffron coloured rice and a good portion of a mix of green peas, cubes of carrot and morsels of baby marrow. Unfortunately the vegetable had been sautéed and gave the impression that they were a frozen mix! The peas were tough and the carrot like little pieces of sponge rubber. When, after the meal we mentioned it to Muammer he said that vegetables were fresh. If they were it must have been a few days before and they had been cooked and recooked; for us they were inedible. But that was no big problem as the portion of chips was generous and the rice lovely.
Jean’s fillet was a revelation. Usually, for cheaper meals, they use the point of the steak and batter it with a meat mallet to flatten and tenderise it. This however was a proper round steak cut from the middle of the fillet. It was about 4 – 5 inches in diameter and at least ¾ of an inch thick. When she cut into it, it was perfectly “pink” inside. The flavour was spot on and the tenderness all she could have hoped for. The weight I would estimate at between 6 and 8 ounces. Jean said it was one of the best she has ever had; and she has had a few, as fillet is her favourite meal. The extra mushroom sauce she had asked for came in a bowl on the side. It was creamy and full of sliced fresh mushrooms.
My sirloin was of a similar weight but of course longer and thinner. The fat had been removed so it was all meat. Sirloin is always a little tougher than fillet but this one was eminently edible and the taste with its “pan juices” was just right.
There is no pudding included in this set meal and to be honest we were pretty full anyway.
However, we were treated by Muammer to a dish of ice-cream each and a slice of strawberry cheesecake to share. We tried very hard but were unable to finish the crust of the cheesecake as it was just too big!
So to recap: apart from two small problems that I am sure will be sorted out, it was an excellent meal and at 32.50 lira each (£9.28) very good VFM containing as it did for us; a large glass of wine, a bowl of soup and a steak meal!
The menu contained a good choices of steak dishes such as Mexican, Hawaiian, mushroom and Diana as well as the ones we chose.
Definitely one to add to your list if you want a good reasonably priced meal.
