“Oykun Hotel Calis Beach Turkey”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

Just returned from two weeks holiday to Oykun Hotel in Calis Beach 24/09/12. Excellent value for money. I find it difficult to fault the hotel. There are two large pools, with ample sunbeds. The bar area , is functional but a bit drab, could do with a face lift. We stayed on a bed & breakfast basis, and the breakfasts were in the main very good, plenty of choice, with omelettes, fried eggs, and sometimes pancakes, together with cooked meats cheeses, fruit, cakes, and yoghurt. The rooms were clean, and the towels and bedding were changed every other day. The hotel was located within five minute walk from resort centre, but there was no noise day or night. The staff were always very polite and could not do enough for you.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week in September. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived in Turkey! On arrival to the hotel we were greeted by friendly smiles as we were shown to our room. Even better, our cases were carried up the stairs for us! First impressions of the room were slightly disappointing. It was smaller than imagined but we soon learned to love it! The bed covers were not so comfortable but there are lots of spare blankets in the sofa.

Breakfast is served between 8 and 10am. There is plenty of choice. The staff members are all lovely and get to know you straight away. After a day or two they know who you are, your room number and your 'usual' drink at the bar!

The pools are both lovely and well maintained. One is quieter than the other. You soon get chatting to the other holiday makers, many of whom have visited the Oykun several times!

The dinner menu also offers lots of choice. On one night in the week we stayed, there was a Turkish night with a BBQ, music and dancing which was great fun.

The Oykun Hotel is in a great location with the shops, beach and restaurant just around the corner. We went on several excursions which were all enjoyable. Nick, the holiday rep, is very helpful! We booked through Thompson which I would definitely recommend, It is reassuring to see friendly reps when you land in a foreign country. Although the excursions through Thompson are more expensive, you definitely get your money's worth for example on the Turlte Watch day out you go on an electric boat and have a tour guide with you all day.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a nice, relaxing holiday. It is just what we needed!

Room Tip: We were on the first floor which was very quiet, in the old part of the hotel.

The hotel was situated just off the main street, a short walk from the seafront. Staff were very pleasant and happy to help with any queries. The entire place was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The hotel has two pools both of which seemed to have plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, we spent many happy hours here. Lots of guests were returning for 2nd and 3rd times, surely a good sign. The only down side was the noise. We were in room 2103 on the ground floor above the laundry and next to what must have been a broom cupboard. We were awakened every morning at 6.30am by the sound of banging doors and what we assumed were clanging buckets! We didn't complain or ask to be moved as the room was very convenient for the pools, bar and reception.
Breakfast was fine but they served wonderful coffee.

A friend and I stayed in the Oykun Hotel from Sept.10 - 17th, 2012. Apparently the owners started off with one hotel but they proved to be so popular, they later bought the hotel next door and combined the two. The rooms are an acceptable size, clean and well appointed, with fresh towels every other day. The only thing missing was a wastepaper bin but we just saved our bags from the supermarket across the road. All the guests were British and our Thomson Rep informed us that as from the start of 2013, it will belong exclusively to Thomsons Holidays. Many people go back year after year and arrange to meet their friends from the UK there at the same time so it can be a bit "clique-y" but there's no need to get involved in that scenario and we chose not to.

We went on a B & B basis and the breakfasts are really very good on a buffet basis. Salads, cold meat & cheese, hard-boiled eggs, brown & white bread - with a toaster if you want it - 6 types of jam, fresh fruit, cereal & yoghurt, and cake or biscuits. Coffee, (very weak) tea, water and fruit juice. Every other day there'd be someone making omelettes (or a fried egg if you'd prefer) and once during our week, they were making fresh pancakes. A lot of guests used to take their own tea-bag to breakfast and fill their cup from the hot water machine. The lunches are excellent and they have a comprehensive menu although we never ate there in an evening as there are so many lovely places on the sea-front.

We ate in 6 different restaurants and went back to our favourite (George's) on our last night. To find George's, go to the sea front and turn right. It's a few hundred yards up but on the way you may want to stop in a cocktail bar called Bus Stop which is up some steps at the side of one of the restaurants and has the most fabulous views over the bay. To see the sunsets from there is just fantastic. They serve beer, wine and coffee as well as cocktails and I think that later in the night it's probably really noisy but we always went early before the crowd. Another place really work visiting is a Guitar/Piano Bar with live jazz music outdoors every night. It's quite a charismatic sort of place, a little bit down at heel but comfortable enough. It has a large fountain (with ducks) and they've done their best to pretty it up by hanging fairy-lights around the place. To find it, you need to walk down the main road away from the beach, stay on the left and look for a tailor's shop down one of the side streets. It's right there but - take a tip from one who knows - DO NOT USE THE TOILETS - go before you get to the bar!!! It's such a shame, really, because the music is good, the atmosphere is great and the people really nice but you need to wear welly boots to use the loos! If that doesn't put you off, you'll have a good time there.

Room Tip: There's a very busy road just outside the hotel and the Turks are notoriously fond of their car...

The Oykun is a 3 star hotel and is everything you could wish for in this type of holiday hotel. The staff and mangement are friendly and helpful, the rooms are spotless and well-serviced, the facilities are very good and well-maintained and breakfast is healthy and excellent with a vast amount of choice. The hotel has two pools, one is quite large (probably 25 metres in length) and the other is a bit smaller but still a decent size. We didn't eat here (other than for breakfast) as we like to try different restaurants so we cannot comment on the food, except to say that if breakfast is anything to go by, you will not be disappointed.

Its location is very good, just 100 metres from the main street in Calis and 200 metres from the excellent beach and promenade with heaps of restaurants, where you can eat whilst watching one of the best sunsets you will ever see. Calis is only 10 minutes from the centre of Fetiye (population 80,000) by road, but a much better way of getting their is the frequent water-taxi which starts from Calis' main street and which takes 30 minutes to get to Fetiye's harbour. A much more scenic route. Fetiye has a very large Tuesday market which is worth a visit.

There are plenty of tours that you can take in this area, both on water and inland.

All in all, a very good hotel.

Room Tip: There are two blocks, either side of the main pool. I couldn't see any plauuses or minuses in ei...

I wanted a week away in early July (before the school's broke up!) to take my Mum to an area of Turkey she had visited about 20 years ago. Thomson's Small & Friendly brochure offered the Oykun and the description sounded just what we wanted. My daughter managed to include herself in the holiday, as she'd finished her exams by the date we were travelling, so we booked two rooms and had a great holiday. From the minute we arrived, we were made to feel so welcome - didn't even have to carry our cases up the steps! Goldie was really understanding when I explained that my Mum would prefer a ground-floor room (there are no lifts) and moved her room as soon as a ground-floor room became available. There were always plenty of sunbeds (and staff willing to find extra ones when needed), great swimming pools, beautifully maintained gardens and our rooms were comfortable and had much-needed air conditioning. The maid did an excellent job and made beautiful swan sculptures out of our towels. Breakfast was great - choice of cereals, fresh fruit and the chef would make omelettes or pancakes individually for you. We used the restaurant for lunch and everything was freshly cooked and good value for money. The location is perfect for walking into Calis and to the beach, there is a great choice of restaurants in Calis and it is easy to take the river taxi over to Fethiye for dinner and a bit of shopping in the evening. The management here truly know the meaning of personal service and making their guests feel welcome. Little wonder that people return year after year. I look forward to going back again. Thomson's Rep, Nick, was friendly and helpful and we had an excursion out to Dalyan with a river cruise along the Dalyan river to see the Lycian rock tombs and visit the turtle rescue centre (with a very informative guide who calls himself Danny de Vito).

Room Tip: We thought there was just a ground floor and first floor, so hadn't bothered to request a lower...
