“A must stop”
Reviewed March 17, 2013 via mobile

Township Tavern never disappoints. Paul Centi owner is always in the kitchen. Food is always great and portions are generous. There is a great variety from salads, soups, sandwiches and dinners. There arpe monthly specials that are unique and Thursday night pizza night is a great deal. When you are in the area it is a must stop.

“A former wayside inn worth visiting.”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Yes, much of it has changed over the past 150 years, but all for the better.

I had heard from some friends that the Township Tavern was a warm and friendly place to visit, had good food, and I should definitely try a pizza. After mapping out its location I realized that it is not really in Altamont, but actually in Knox. No matter, it was a sunny Sunday that called out for a drive. Upon arrival we were uncertain if it was open as there were very few cars in the lot. Certainly some belonged to staff and hopefully some to customers. Upon entering we observed one other couple eating at the bar and were warmly greeted by the woman behind the bar and a waitress. We chose to sit at the bar where we could keep one eye on a TV with a football game.

Looking over the 5 or 6 beer taps we chose a Smithwicks ($4.25 /16 oz. pint) and a Saratoga IPA ($4 /16 oz. pint) while we reviewed the menu. In addition to their regular menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees, they feature a different Monthly Special of Apps, Pizza, Burger, Entrees, and Homemade Desserts.

We started with one of the standard menu apps, Fried Green Beans ($5.95) - breaded and served with a horseradish ranch dipping sauce, they went well with the beers. The dipping sauce was actually the highlight of the app.

From the Monthly Specials, we ordered the Pizza ($11 small/$15 large). This could easily be called a harvest pizza - a thin crust with caramelized apples, caramelized shallots, walnuts, mozzarella cheese, and finished with a cabernet reduction. This was simply amazing. The flavors individually and combined were pleasing along with the mix of sweetness, saltiness, and crunchy. There is no doubt that the leftovers are going to be equally enjoyed.

It's worth noting here that Guinness is not easily found in these Hill-towns, but the Township Tavern recently added an additional cooler so they could meet the requests of their customers. This was explained to me when I noted a sign posted that said "Now serving Guinness $5 for 20 oz." I ordered one and noted that it was close to a perfect pour.

One of the desserts on the Monthly Special menu caught my attention - Pumpkin Roll **Contains nuts** $5.95. The bartender explained that it was a pumpkin cake made similar to how you would make a jellyroll cake, and the filling was mascarpone. Two slices were served with two dollops of whipped cream and sprinklings of mini-chocolate chips and pepitas. The pumpkin flavor was delicious.

The monthly menu also mentions gluten free items that they prepare. There is a small dining area adjacent to the bar and a large dining room in the back. Both were tastefully decorated for the coming holidays. I wish we didn't live almost 30 miles away, but I'm certain we will be returning. They don't have a web-page presence, but they are on Facebook where you can see their Monthly Specials.

“Township Tavern is excellent!”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

I am so glad the Township Tavern is here! A local eatery with small town charm, local brews and well stocked bar. The menu is diverse, with selections ranging from artisan pizzas, sandwiches, soups and salads to full dinner entrees. There are new selections every month. The homemade tomato sauce, filled with chucks of tomatoes is EXCELLENT. Be sure to ask for extra sauce. The artisan pizzas are amazing. Dinners; great new choices. Desserts are wonderful. Prices are great. Service is very timely and the waitresses are friendly, hard-working, and timely. There is room for intimate dining, and a large room that can readily take on large groups. The the acoustics are such that you can hear each other talk. Very comfortable, and a setting I would take out-of-town and local friends to.

“What a pleasant surprise.”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

After visiting Thatcher Park near Albany, NY, we were looking for a great place to have dinner. I checked online and couldn't find anything close by. Then I check local bars and the Township Tavern came up. We drove there and were sure glad we did. The service was great, the waitress was friendly and helpful. The chef is very talented using seasonal ingredients. Very creative menu. The atmosphere was clean and family style. The food was fantastic. Can't wait to go back to the Albany area. We will surely return to the township tavern.
