“Pleasant "business man's" hotel in a interesting city off the tourist track”
Reviewed June 10, 2009

The Rumi is a pleasant hotel but felt more like a hotel for business travelers than someone seeing the sights. Indeed, the only sightseers we saw in Konya were Muslims visiting the shrine or there to see the Whirling Dervishes. The hotel had functional cookie cutter rooms with confortable beds. The rooms were clean although ours did smell of smoke. However, we didn't ask for a nonsmoking room so maybe it's my fault. Ours was rather dark but I did see others with more light. Although we had a standard room we had a sitting area with a table and two chairs so that was a plus. The air conditioner worked but was weak, but then it was Spring so maybe it wasn't turned up for Summer weather yet. The view from the breakfast room was superb and the breakfast excellent. The staff were helpful but didn't speak much English. However, we got the information we needed.

The hotel is okay, but it's location across from the Mevlana (Rumi) Museum is really its strong point. Konya is an intriguing city off the tourist track. The Museum is small but you do get some understanding of the sufis from the exhibits. If you can, plan your trip to Konya to catch a Whirling Dervish cermony. They're held periodically at a large auditorium at the edge of town. We were lucky as our trip coincided with a performance. It was a marvel. The atmoshere of a large auditorium was anything but atmospheric. However, the event was taken very seriously and clearly the religious feeling and trancelike state of the participants was real. As far as I could tell, we were the only Westerners in the crowded audience -- for me this heightened the experience.

The city itself is also worthwhile. Unlike Istanbul with it's restaurant touts and endless rug salemen, Konya is a real place where you can enjoy the low key ambience of the city without being harassed. The Rumi is a good hotel well positioned to let you experience the city while still enjoying Western comforts. So, altough I'm keener on the city than I am on the hotel, I'd recommend both.

Location, location, location. Near Rumi's tomb and with several good restaurants in walking distance. Only drawback was they billed us on making reservation the told us no cancellation was possible. We were there for the ruins and didn't see any other hotel options.

The hotel is right across the street from Mevlana (Rumi) Museum and is relatively new. The breakfast is good, and there is a great view of the Mevlana from the terrace where you eat. The room was sold as non-smoking but clealy was not. It was clean and basic and small. Not even one chair to sit in. There was a constant smell of sewer gas which was quite unpleasant. Not a good value for the money -- about $100 a night.

Don't be put off by the lurid turquoise exterior. This is an attractive place to stay.

The location is great - over the road from the from the Mevlana Museum, a short walk from the Alaadin Mosque with its lovely surrounding gardens and the Karatay Museum with its spectacular tiles. In fact it is not too far on foot from the Cultural Centre, where there are regular demonstrations of the so-called 'whirling dervishes'.

The hotel is modern and clean. The room was a good size, as was the bathroom. For once the minbar prices were reasonable. The breakfast was fine, with a good selection of things to eat. The dinner was not so special however, which is a pity as the 4th floor restaurant is attractive with a view of the Mevlana Museum. I would suggest going 20 metres or so and eating at the Konya Mevlevi Sofrasi whch is even closer to the museum and has a vast outdoor terrace.

The staff were welcoming and helpful. There is a high speed internet connection in the reception area.

Oh, and the price was surprisingly reasonable.

We (wife, son (21) and I) stayed at Rumi Hotel in late December 2008. Although we only stayed one night, this would definitely be on our list of places to stay when we return some day. The hotel has a perfect location, being literally a block away from the Mevlana Museaum and Mosque on several blocks to the Mohammed Mosque and the Tile Museum -- all easy walking distance. The Hotel is modern, with clean rooms, fresh linens, comfortable beds, TV and internet connections. The breakfast was adequate though it was "pre-prepared" on plates so there really wasn't a lot of selection. Perhaps the most memorable experience was the help the hotel staff provided the evening we left. We were catching the overnight train to Istanbul and they let us stay in the rooms several hours longer than normal checkout AND they kept our bags while we went sightseeing. Then when time to catch the dolmus to the train station one of the bellhops stood out in the snow for 20 minutes to help us -- way beyond the call of duty. In short, we loved the stay and people -- though the breakfast experience might be improved. Highly recommended overall.

If you are going to stay in Konya...from what I could tell...this is the place to stay. Frommers mentions another hotel...Balikar I think. This one appears better to me. They have a great terrace and a very comfortable room. It is super close to everything...you really can't go wrong with this hotel. Have fun!!

I recently travelled across central Turkey in a hire car with my husband and teenage daughter, and we had been booked into the Rumi hotel by Argeus Travel (a fantastic travel agent based in Urgup in Cappadocia).

The Rumi Hotel was one of a number that Argeus had booked us into, and like the others we were not disappointed.

The welcome was exceptional. Our son was backpacking through Turkey and we were meeting up in Konya (he had chosen to stay in a mega cheapie hostel place elsewhere in Konya). By the time we arrived at the hotel our son was on good terms with the doorman who helped with parking the car, and who welcomed us very warmly. Once inside, the reception staff were wonderful, assessed our party and showed us our booked room and showed us a larger room which we took (paid a bit extra but it was fine).

We had a drink on the terrace upstairs, enjoying the view, and then went out for 'dinner' which was just a local but recommended kebaberie. We are totally used to eating in Turkey so this was fine for us, but for others the hotel food might be more to international tastes. (The hotel offered a menu of the day. ) We just felt we wanted to see a bit of Konya.

We walked up Aladdin's hill, about 10 minutes from the hotel Rumi, and enjoyed the ambience while having some chay.

We were a little conscious of having our very blond haired teenage daughter with us in this city which Lonely Planet suggests is on the Islamic side, but we had no problems when out and about (although she was always accompanied).

The hotel is fantastically convenient for the Mevlana Museum which we visited the following morning after our terrace breakfast.

My only negative comments about the hotel are that it's a bitty dark inside for my taste, smelt a bit of stale cigarette smoke, and was noisy from the streets but hey, it is in a city centre.

  • Liked — welcoming staff and excellent location
  • Disliked — slighty dark, stuffy, traffic noise at night.
