“One big hotel for camels”
Review of Caravanserai

If you are on your way to Konya you might stop here for a break and to check out this very old Caravanserai, or stopping place for ancient travelers. A camel could walk about 24 miles a day and so these were spaced accordingly. This one is huge and has an ornate gate and lots of old rooms, some fouled by pigeons. It is amazing how large it was but not much else to see, just a big old block building. The gate is great. Parking area has a restaurant and gift store.

First caravanseriai I have been to and was quite disappointed as there was little to see but the big building. Charged for entrance and stayed for very short time.

As others have said, it's an ancient stronghold; the purpose of which was to protect the caravans on the Silk Road, way back in 1229. It was restored after a fire in 1278. The covered areas were used in winter & open courtyard used in warmer months. The well-preserved entrance gate is beautifully ornamental in architecture & there are further examples inside. Traders would stop there, along with their horses, all safe inside.

This is an interesting place where travellers a long time ago used the Caravanserai as a place of rest on their long journey. Those who could afford it had rooms here and stables for their animals.
