“Remains of old city”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Agora Open Air Museum is situated next to Kemeralti Market, at the heart of the city. There you can see the remains of the old city from Ancient Greek and Roman times. It's really very interesting, but there are no signs for what you see and it would be better to study before visit.

“Izmir's future from the past”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

This is an archeological site currently cataloging the shattered remains of the past and having uncovered a (thankfully well preserved) underground network structure.
The plan seems to be to re-construct this ancient market place and work is well underway. You could probably revisit it over the next 50 years to monitor progress.
We had a Turkish guide who explained the basics to us .. there are also information boards throughout the site, and there are adequate toilet facilities
In my view this is not a venue suitable for the disabled (yet), and it is not a "tourist hot-spot": the atmosphere is fairly academic.
Allow at least 2 hours to see the best of the current development.
We never were taken to the bazaar nearby, which is a matter of regret for me ... I would advise further time be allowed to include that venue, because by all accounts, the bazaar is well worth a visit if you are in the area.
There are the inevitable pesky street sellers outside the archeological site, so get ready to say NO .. I bought some bits and they were low quality.

“Nice roman ruins with no crowds”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

Agora stands in the very middle of the city of Izmir and it doesn't seem to attract a lot of local or international tourists, making it a perfect place to visit without stress.
Most part of the place is just a collection of fallen stones but there is a very interesting temple basement that still looks in a very good condition. The only information available is in the boards that stand around the pass ways as there are no guides to show you around.
If you're in Izmir don't miss this place just after the bazar.

“A walk around a site with limited signage or direction”
Reviewed April 18, 2014

Big space, but no hand-outs or signage to allow for a self-guided tour. I tagged along behind an English speaking group who had a great guide, but would have been completely in the dark otherwise.
