stopped here for a day while on a cruise and didn`t want to follow the hordes to ephesus , but found instead an unknown gem , paid my 5 lira admission into the agora but found an amazing basilica still being excavated , running water flowing into a gutter system built over 1900 years ago
metre thick walls , perfect arches , biggest shame was we were the only 2 there , i know this site as
a lot to compete with but well worth a visit , you can really soak in the atmosphere you never could in a site like ephesus , side or pergammon , also there are mausoleums showing the populations that have formed this cities history

An interesting pile of stones from the Roman era. But the site does not stand out as anything particularly special and the huge car park in the background kind of spoils the photos!

I would not recommend going out of your way to visit these ruins. The Agora can be difficult to figure out, as the signage doesn't provide a thorough explanation. We visited this as part of a tour of Izmir, and without our guide's explanation, I never would have figured out why there were so many tombstones off to the side. (It's because the ruins were eventually covered over and the area was used as a cemetery. When they were excavating, the bodies were relocated, but many of the old grave markers were left. The ones with a "turban" on top belonged to imams.) Honestly, the grave markers were one of the more interesting things to see.

Our guide was able to help us make sense of what we were seeing, how things were used, and show us the system for getting running water. Afterwards, we went up to the highest part of Izmir and saw where the cistern was at Kadifekale. Seeing the two helped make it easier to visualize how running water was provided in ancient times. And the view from the top was stunning.

If already visited Efesus and/or Pergamon, the Agora is nothing. But if you are already strolling around Kemerali you should take 30 minutes to look around the never crowded archeological site. The city of Imir hopefully will do something to improve the image of this site as the sourrounding is not very nice.

Found it after a long walk uphill but it's the worst ruins I've seen in Turkey. Safe your walking for Ephesus, and the PMD circuit around Selcuk. Lots more organised stones to see than the Agora. Give it a miss
