I decided to venture out to see this on my first day in Izmir. I went to Konak bus station and then got bus 33 to Kadifekale.
I got off at the end of the line and it was pretty scary. (Granted you could get off earlier by the polis and walk) Anyways, I got off at the end and walked back to the site. It was quite deserted and only a few people were out. Maybe this was because it was Ramazan or maybe not. Nevertheless I ventured alone towards the fort. When you get to the fort it has an awesome view at the top and it is free to get in to.
I would just like to say use EXTREME caution when going here alone (especially if you are a woman). I mean I am 25 yr old man and I was little nervous when I saw a group of 7 teenagers, and smaller groups of homeless looking men. I am sure they were fine, as most people in Turkey are. But just be careful, don't bring a lot of money or valuables.
PS you can also buy souvenirs here. They may however be cheaper at other places!
