Dinler Hotels – Urgup

The decor of this hotel looks to have been straight out of a bad 70's sitcom. That said, it was clean and the twin beds were fairly comfortable, if a bit thin mattress wise. The bathroom was tiled completely and was just fine. The meal buffets were more like cattle calls with multiple tour groups pushing their way to and fro. We were traveling as a couple alone, and the dining experience was a bit intimidating. The unfortunate part was the hotel being located too far from the village to walk there for a quick bite to eat on our own. As it was November it was dark early and we didn't venture out after a full day of touring. A shame not to have a chance to explore the area on our own. 5 stars??? I think not.

Stayed at this property as part of a Gate 1 tour. The hotel is nice. The rooms are quiet. The pillows were great. The selection at the buffet was good. Free wifi. The bathroom was a nice size. The walk into the town of Urgup is about 15 minutes with lots of shopping, restaurants, and wine tasting. Also you can see some of the "fairy chimneys" that contain caves that are in the Cappadocia area. Not a 5 star hotel by US standards.

This hotel is used by large tour groups, and management handles these captive audiences with strict rules and stinginess. Some basic services were absent or unreliable: no electric kettle to make coffee or tea in the morning; no urns for tea in the lobby; unreliable wifi that works only in lobby if at all. The were signs announcing various prohibitions everywhere. Staff were rude, perhaps because they see such heavy turnover, and make you feel like cattle. A woman who tried to fill her water bottle from a dispenser in the restaurant was yelled at by an employee and advised that this is forbidden. Hotel Dinler was the most inhospitable and unpleasant hotel on our 3 week tour of Turkey.

We stayed at this hotel as our travel agent was not willing to give us any other choice. We got a room with two single beds, even though our travel agent had confirmed our preference for a king bed about 3 weeks in advance. On asking for a change, the reception staff said the hotel was full and they had no other rooms. The room did not have a tea/coffee maker. On being queried, the reception staff said they only provide it in certain "Executive" rooms.

We stayed for three nights, and throughout our stay I noticed that the attitude of the reception staff was generally like "Why have you come here? We are not willing to do anything." :-)

Our room did not have much of a view, but was clean and comfortable. However, there were large groups of people staying at the hotel, and every night, people would continue coming into the nearby rooms in the corridor till very late into the night, laughing and chatting loudly, which caused a lot of sleep disturbance. I'm not sure if there are any rooms which can avoid this problem - probably rooms at the end of a corridor?

The main plus point of this hotel was the food. There was a good variety at breakfast and dinner buffets and it tasted good. If you are inclined to eat out, there's a good restaurant by the name of Salma-Sultan a few paces down to the right of the hotel.

Room Tip: Try choosing rooms at the end of a corridor, and avoid rooms at cross-roads of corridors.

We stayed 2 nights on a tour in Capadokia. We were very pleased with this stay especially with the food and the terrasse where we had wonderful time. You can walk a little bit to the center of the village where you can find several cafés and restaurants.

We stayed here for 3 nights on a RSD tour "On the Trail of the apostles". You need to judge a hotel by how much you are paying and for the price we paid for the tour, this was a reasonable standard touring hotel.

Arrival 4/5 - a fast, efficient and friendly check in with some complimentary nibbles offered on arrival. The lobby felt quite dark with a low ceiling. 2 lifts, though they are small.

Room 3/5 - a reasonable size room with 2 single beds. Average quality bedding and the room was quiet - we slept well. Large fridge/minibar. Small table with 2 chairs. Plenty of storage space. Digital safe. Good aircon. Slippers but no robes. Small flat screen tv with CNN, but no BBC world. Only 1 socket - not enough for today's digital traveller. No balcony - a shame, as we would have liked to have sat out.

Bathroom 3/5 - quite large. Reasonable shower. Average quality towels and toiletries.

Dinner 4/5 - quite a good selection of dishes every day. We were allocated a room away from the buffet, which was quieter than the main room, but lacked any atmosphere. Efficient drinks service.

Breakfast 4/5 - lots of choice. Eggs cooked to order. Lots of cheeses, meats, salads, cereals etc. Superb bread and very nice coffee.

Location 3/5 - ok for visiting the sites of Cappadocia as part of a tour, but out of the way if you don't have your own transport..

Other 3/5 - friendly and efficient service throughout our stay. I can't comment on the pool and other facilities as we never saw or used them.

Overall 3/5 - more like 3.5/5 really. We quite enjoyed our stay here, as a base for seeing wonderful Cappadoacia.
