“underground city”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

Construction and usage history is amazing. Had no idea Hittite culture was so advanced. The city had 7 levels, 4 of which have been dug out. Inhabitants were able to remain within cave for up to 5 months with adequate water, air, food, warmth supply.

“Wondrous cave homes and underground cities”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

I had always wanted to go to Cappadocia as I had been entranced by the photos of the cave dwellings built into volcanic ash cliff faces for decades, and had hoped to add a tour there to the end of my cruise which finished in Istanbul in July this year. My NZ travel agent was not hopeful and said that time would not permit a visit, but whilst in Istanbul our local tour guide from Fez Travel Turkey said - not a problem, and organised flight tickets to Kayseri about 1 hour from the region we were visiting, a comfortable grecian style hotel in the middle of the cave region and an overnight trip and tour to this wonderful natural and man made wonder. As part of the tour we had wonderful lunches at lovely eating places and very good guides. Our last guide was a Janis Joplin fan and at our invitation sang some of her music for our entertainment.

A key feature was the walk of 4 1/2 kms on the first day through the Rose Valley where the different colour schemes left by layers of volcanic ash were evident. Parts of the valley were planted in ground hugging vines which produce a local wine, apricot trees which were laden with fruit - we were invited to pick and eat them and anything else that was growing - the Turkish way we were told. Pumpkins were also growing. There were no farm buildings though the land was well kept and obviously the volcanic nature of the soil would contribute to the fertility of the area. They also grew pumpkins,

The next day featured a visit to a local celebrity owned village style pottery, some wine tasting, some other amazing rock formations and a tour of one part of the underground city in Derinkuyu. It is interesting to know that the temperature inside the caves stays at 13oc whatever the weather is outside. We visited in July this year and the temps were in the mid 30s outside but the cave interiors were lovely and cool.

Overall this was a wonderful attraction, it was everything I thought it would be and more, and I strongly recommend that you try to visit the region if you are heading to Turkey.
