This is a place that can only be truly appreciated by actually visiting it and soaking up the atmosphere.
One can only imagine what it would have been like to live underground for so long, out of necessity rather than need.
A truly Amazing place.

This place is very interesting, and we were fortunate in that our guide took us there at a time when he was confident it wouldn't be crowded. There are passageways that are very narrow (you have to bend over almost double to get through) and long - so if you're claustrophobic this might not be a good place to go. I'm mildly claustrophobic, and managed ok, but wouldn't have liked to have been there when it was crowded that's for sure. There are also lots of steps and it goes down approximately 4 floors underground. Lighting is good though, but I'd take a torch next time for 'security' in case the lights went out.

We visited this site, in the village of Ozkonak, with a tour group (there are a number of other similar sites in Cappadocia). This site is not as large as some sites (some of which are only partially open for touring) but is quite big enough to give a good idea of underground living. The "wine cellar" was particularly interesting.

Our visit was immeasurably enhanced when we sat down, by chance, at the little snack shop near the entrance. We met Latif Acar, the one-armed imam of the local mosque, who discovered the underground city in 1972, while digging in his garden (now the site and its parking lot). Although his English is very rudimentary and our Turkish is nonexistent we had an enjoyable time drinking tea and communicating/mimicking/etc. about family and the site. He is pictured in two paperback books (Cappadocia and Underground Cappadocia) and given credit for the discovery and early preservation of the site (both books available from the little gift shop).

Ofcourse its worth to visit underground cities in Cappadocia but Ozkonak is far away from town Avanos. There are only three signs so we kept going in and out of the town. Lack of sign. If only you have a car you you may visit easily.

I loved the scenery and the history. Some of the restoration and original paintings are just incredible and the location under and in caves is just outstanding. There is a nice amount of walking involved and some areas get a little crowded but the views are really worth seeing. I think the history alone is worth a view but the work and stories told inside the caves are really interesting. No pictures allowed in the caves due to preservation requirements.
