A truly magical place to stay in what must surely be one of the most amazing locations on earth! I'd dreamt about visiting Cappadocia for years and spent a long time researching which hotel to stay in; I'm therefore very happy to review that, upon arrival at Anatolian Houses, I was totally overwhelmed... not only by the architecture & design, which is quite simply spectacular (the hotel looks better in reality than in any photograph you'll ever see!) but also by the welcome received by so many friendly faces! All the staff I encountered were super helpful, beautiful people, nothing was ever too much trouble with true Turkish hospitality at every turn.
There's such a relaxing atmosphere here; built into the hillside among the ancient caves of the region, it felt quite biblical at times and I found it so peaceful... birdsong in the gardens, the breeze rustling through the trees... far enough away from the hustle & bustle of the little town of Goreme at the bottom of a small hill, and yet within easy walking distance if you choose to explore!
You'll find the mornings here like no other place in the world, combining the haunting call to prayer with the excitement of so many hot air balloons firing-up overhead, sometimes (almost!) descending right down into the hotel's courtyard! Fantastic to see, especially when you've dreamt about it for so long and there it is coming true before your very eyes!
My cave suite was fabulous (Rm.2302) with its own balcony and unbelievable views of the peaks and fairy chimneys surrounding the hotel; built right into one of the fairy chimneys (again, a dream come true for me!); beautifully appointed interior with natural cave/stone walls and a stunning wood-carved front door! The bathroom was very boutiquey (great shower!) with all mod-cons combined with unique artefacts from the area on little cave shelves, and a lovely jacuzzi bath tub! All the suites would seem to be individually decorated, none looked the same, and are a stunning example of the local rock-cut architecture, just beautiful! Of course, in rooms of this calibre, tea-making facilities are provided, together with the usual mini-bar services, and a smashing flat screen TV to nod-off to after an active day's exploring!
The hotel provides various outdoor activities (speak to Kerim Aydogolu on reception, he's an absolute STAR!) and I took advantage of them all... hot-air ballooning is a MUST! AH can also arrange for you to go horseback riding, trekking, or simply to take a private car tour with your very own personal guide/driver!
I spent 6 days at AH in the most spectacular setting and would recommend longer stays to take advantage of the holistic experience as well as exploring this bizarre and beautiful land. Food was great, breakfast being my favourite meal of the day with an entire slice of honeycomb fresh from the hive to cut up and have with your morning yogurt! Also LOVED the taps with red & white free-flowing Cappadocian wine... anyone who's generous with their vino is a friend of mine!
My advice is to just come and experience it for yourself! Seeing really is believing and you won't be disappointed!
