A beautiful place with awesome views. Lots of places to visit but we didn't have time to appreciate all there was to see.

The painted churches in Goreme Open Air Museum are truly amazing. It is hard to believe that you are seeing painting from early Christianity in the middle of the stunning geographic formations. I agree that September was a perfect time to visit. The weather was warm but pleasant. Be sure to visit the Dark Church. The quality of the paintings is there best there and it is definitely worth the extra admission fee.

If you are in the area, one really needs to come for a visit. Some of the best structures, cave art, and religious frescoes are preserved here. The soft stone made it possible for the locals 1000 ish years ago to hide from invaders and/or religious persecution. There are entire subterranean cities in the area. This attraction has mostly churches and monasteries. Some of the sites are quite a hike up an 18% grade hill. Others require ducking into caves or play a kind of peek a boo with holes in rocks to check things out. There are some steps and stairs. There is a main wide path that's a bit hilly and all paths are at least somewhat uneven. So folks like my honey couldn't walk around too much for fear of further injury to his knees. To have pictures of the art, you have to buy postcards. Picture taking requires flash, which can fade the ancient paint. The locals and employees are really. Be sure to go into Goreme for the best shopping prices anywhere in Turkey!

This is a hiker's dream! Dramatic and varied landscapes, wonderful views, all completely accessible from the local towns (we stayed in Goreme). Make sure you go in September - the summers are waaaay too hot for spending much time outside.

Cappadocia is like no place on earth. This park is interesting and includes buildings built into the rock faces, such as churches. There are lots of signs and it's close enough to Goreme, so a guided tour shouldn't be needed.

When we went it was very hot and it includes a little bit of walking uphill in the sun. We very much regretted not filling our bottles up beforehand!
