Owner description: One of the top attractions in the region, this outdoor museum contains the remains of many churches carved into the famous Cappadocia stone. Of note are the many excellent frescoes that can be seen when exploring the various structures.

History comes alive in the Goreme Open Air Museum.
Here, insights into the history of Turkey, the way the people lived, worshipped can all be seen from the various churches and quarters around.
Most impressionale were the various churches carved out from stone around the area, the paintings of Christ and his disciples, and how they had been defaced following enemy attacks.

Definitely worth a visit, especially so with a good guide to explain the significance of the different churches

This place is like a smaller Goreme to me. It was definitely a shorter visit.

At Zelve, there are less frescoes to see. But you get to climb up a make-shift ladder into an upper room. That was pretty fun.

Cappadocia is a unique part of the world with cave churches at the Goreme open air museum and nearby fairy chimneys. This is a very special part of Turkey. It was hard to pick a highlight from our two weeks in Turkey, but we think Cappadocia and a morning Balloon Trip over this area would probably come in at No 1

We used Adnan Tanguler (you will find him at Asianturkey) and he is fantastic - very professional! Very Knowledgeable and attentive!!

My travel guide listed Zelve as a thing to see but not as nice as Goreme museum... well the difference is that in Goreme you have to see, in Zelve you have to do! And this was much more fun for me. If you have your own car it is better, because the bus just leaves you at the beginning of the street, which is 3km away... But you can stop in a nice place in the middle where there are some rock chimney, very nice, and a big white hill which is blindind with the sun.
The valley in Zelve is more beautiful than goreme, with all that big mountains around. The best thing is that you can enetr in the monastry and climb inside uop to the highest rooms There also is a hidden tunnel without any light, so take a torch with you! I really had much fun exploring the caves up and down and it gave me much impression about how these people and monks were used to life in such a place.
