Quite a few Christian churches to see here. The decorations are still discernible in many; some more than others. We also visited the Tokali church, a little way down the hill (10th -11th century). It does get crowded, even in low season, so patience is required if you’re going to get the most from the experience.
There’s a welcome cafe, within the main area of churches. Some of them are chargeable to enter & we didn’t mind paying to see these incredible places. We went inside the Dark Church. St. Catherine’s & Sandals Church.
No photos allowed inside the churches but it’s the sort of place that will stay forever in your mind.

“A must-do”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

A must-do as it's so interesting. Make sure you visit the churches to see the amazing frescos. Great historical interest & fascinating to learn about how people lived. Some great photo opportunities.

Here you have an easy opportunity to explore the cave churches of the early Christians. To tour everything one must climb hills, but your efforts will be rewarded. The inside of some of these caves are beautiful.

“Astounding wall paintings/friezes in cave churches”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

The site was very crowded with tour buses by 11 a.m. Despite guide books reporting that your ticket is good for all day, this has changed to single entry only. Go early or later in the day to avoid peak crowd times. You cannot take pictures of the paintings and there are security personnel at most of them to remind you of this.
