“Very interesting, but gets monotonous after a point.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

The Goreme Open Air Museum is about a 2-3 km walk from the city center and is a good way to start off your tour of Cappadocia. It's mostly a collection of numerous churches built into caves. Quite amazing to see how monks lived in the caves and made wall paintings to depict the life of Christ as teachings. The views of the area are also quite nice. However, it gets repetitive after the first few churches, as there's more and more of the same thing. It's advisable to take the audio guide available at the entrance (15 TL per person), which would explain the history behind each point of attraction. You can carry an extra pair of earphones so that two people can use the same audio guide if required. Should take about 45 mins to an hour to cover this.

“Must go”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

Amazing place. Definitely a must go if you visit Goreme. The best cave churches in the area. If time allows, I would also suggest you visiting the area opposite the museum, which is very interesting and have few tourists.

“Ignore the negative reviews - this is super.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

This is a really interesting monastic settlement with many churches cut out of the bare rock. All date from 10th-11th century some are plain and some are highly decorated with Byzantine airings. It is really good if you like that sort of thing. Ignore all the comments that suggest that it is a bit Walt Disnified - it isn't.

“Very interesting”

We enjoyed walking around the ruins, in and out of the caves. There are very old frescoes to see. It is a fascinating walk back in time.
