Owner description: One of the top attractions in the region, this outdoor museum contains the remains of many churches carved into the famous Cappadocia stone. Of note are the many excellent frescoes that can be seen when exploring the various structures.

Beautiful churches with amazing, preserved frescoes. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures even without flash. Also, the Dark church has a separate entrance fee.

Try to find the tunnel connecting two valley. Worth spending a day. It is only a short drive from Urgup. Take a flashlight if you are planning to explore

We took the green tour out to Ihlara valley and to the Derinkuyu Underground City the day before visiting the open air museum, so in comparison the open air museum was not quite so interesting. I would suggest making the open air museum your first stop in Goreme. It is still an interesting place to check out. and an must-see, but it just wasn't the highlight of our trip.

Also, it is worth it to pay the extra 8 Libra to go up to the Dark Church. The frescos are extremely well preserved and it is just fascinating to imagine how it was completed with only a single nature light source from one little window.

Finally, if you have the time we highly recommend hiking from here to Sword Valley and to Rose Valley. It is a good half day to full day hike, depending how much time you want to take to explore the caves along the way. Also, if it is hot out, the caves are a good reprieve from the heat.

This was an interesting site but an overview at the beginning would have been helpful. We walked from the town of Goreme arriving fairly hot and bothered and had absolutely no idea of the size of this attraction or whether to go up or down to start once inside. A few site plans or maps indicating, "You are here" and where the various churches were located would have allowed us to pace ourselves and ensure we did not miss any important elements. When we asked the man on the turnstile if there was a map, he just told us to hire a guide.

Of course I knew that this museum was a top attraction but I had not expected that it would be that crowded. I was there not too late in the morning but that did not help much. I would advise that if you really want to enjoy this museum, be there right after the opening time (or late in the afternoon). Of course it also depends on the season. I was there early June.
