“A place full of interesting history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

The key attraction of Goreme (Cappadoicia) where there many rock churches and monasteries with well kept and beautiful frescos. The only problem is that these places could be very busy with many large tour groups and the guards will hurry people in and out of the caves quickly. 'No parking, no parking....' they will shout! We visited this as part of the Red Tour and spent about 2 hours all told on site. For those who would like to spend more time there, perhaps you should do it independently and therefore could get into the caves as many times as you like.

“Great cultural landscape”

This is a visit you should take in the early morning hours with few people around. Such a great landscape and wonderful paintings from early christianity!

“Travel back in time”

Lots of pondering about the landscape and architecture make me humble of our past. Historical sites and biblicial figures paitning are an absolute treat to the eyes of artists.

“Meh++”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

We got here at 8AM sharp and the buses were coming... Poor documentation that did nothing to give a feel for the history of the place. My wife got the audio tour - her comment was "It's like this is for the blind!" - meaning it was full of things like, "In front of you is a staircase going up to the left...". In a nutshell, this is pretty much the signage.
We were spoiled by having a car and getting around to all sorts of varied sights without crowds, so the horde scene at the Open Air Park was a shock.
Some historical re-enactment with caves furnished as they were hundreds of years ago would be nice. If this is all you get to see of Cappadocia, I am sorry. There is so much more.

“Monastic settlement inside of rocks, Christian cave-paintings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

It is a very strange place, with lots of churches carved into the faces of cliffs. Inside, the walls are painted with ochre and pigments. It's a weird cross between caveman painting and christian art. Spend the extra lira to see the dark church as well, it's the most beautiful of the churches.
