We stayed at Lalezar for 3 days during our Cappadocia tours, the hotel and breakfast ( you can only eat at 8am sharp, we attempted to 5 mins before 8am because our bus will fetch us at 9am but were told to wait though the buffet was ready), clean rooms and bath but no TV and internet!

Our tour operator really hyped up Hotel Lalezar when he claimed that this “boutique hotel” was better than 10 stars. Obviously with a real cave hotel, you’re not going to get that modern feel. There’s a vent in the bathroom which is literally a hole in the ceiling and it must have rained before we arrived (or maybe water leaked from the shower/toilet -- eek) but our bath mat was soaked. Unlike other posts, I can’t complain about the shower as we didn’t have a problem with the pressure or heat of the water. Don’t cut corners around the bed because it hurts like there’s no tomorrow when your shins graze the stone foundation. The temperature is a lot cooler in a cave, but the hotel only turned the heat on at night – so you best have plans to be out in the sun during the day. I wouldn’t say the staff went out of their way to make your stay wonderful, but they do offer to pick you up from the bus stop, and the rooms were kept clean so long you remember to leave your key at the desk. I think that after those initial shocks, we didn’t mind our stay at the hotel. The terraces on each of the floors had breathtaking views of the town, especially at morning when the hot air balloons fill the sky. Our tv only had one working station, but the dining room had a good functioning tv, and a computer with internet. The location was nice – maybe 10 minutes to the center of town, but 15-20 minutes back up after a long day of hiking. I’m not sure how much the hotel cost as it was part of a package deal, but it sounds like Lalezar is more budget than boutique – and so I guess you get what you paid for.

If you're looking to stay in a traditional cave hotel at a decent price, then Lalezar is the place for you. But if you're looking to experience traditional Turkish hospitality, go elsewhere.
The rooms are quite large and literally carved from the rock with some even featuring beds carved from stone. The bathrooms are spacious but aren't as clean as one would like, with some mold and grime that even my wife, a seasoned budget traveller, felt compelled to clean before using. And while we had consistent hot water, on one occasion the water seemed to just run out completely. The same thing happened the next day to several of the other guests.

But it's the management that really lets the place down. They seemed like they just couldn't care less. The cute and homey restaurant area felt more like a hangout for the manager and his friends which felt rather unwelcoming. The satelite TV didn't work in our room, but when we told them, they just shrugged (it did seem work just fine in the reception area where the manager and his buddies spent the day hanging out). Likewise, none of the guests were able to get on the hotel wifi, a fact that the managent was indifferent to, probably because they had no problem with their computer.

So it's really a mixed bag. Cave hotels in Cappadocia are really expensive, and it's nice to find an affordable one like Lalezar. I don't really mind that the Internet and TV didn't work (but don't advertise that you have them), but the bathrooms were grungey and the management made us feel unwelcome. If that doesn't bother you and you're just spending the time in your room sleeping, then this place could work for you.

This place sure enough is built right into the side of a mountain, but we were disappointed all the way around with the upkeep of the rooms and the public areas of this hotel. We never knew the name of the gentleman who was managing the place when we arrived, but we got the impression that perhaps the hotel business wasn't his first choice. He was nice enough, but he didn't seem to know that little things make a big difference for some people. For example, the flowerpots and urns around the grounds had litter in them. The grounds themselves could have been swept clean of the piles of leaves. Wind had blown tablecloths off the tables and nobody bothered to pick them up. Worst of all, both the bedside lamps in our room #19 didn't work at all. Our traveling companion downstairs noticed mildew on the wall above her bed. It was cold after touring all day, but the management didn't turn on the radiator heaters until after we arrived. Worst of all, the hotel mascot was a cute little puppy named Pondjuk that would not let the guests have their breakfast in peace, and besides, what was he doing in there anyway? The breakfast/reception area was dark and uninviting. I hate being negative about this place. It could be a wonderful place with the proper management, I think.

Room Tip: Lots of stair climbing, no lift if you have trouble with that.

Lalezar Cave Hotel

We arrived early morning at Goreme after a 12 hour overnight bus ride from Istanbul. We were a little disoriented as there was no one there to receive us. We went to the tourist information office located close by and the officer on duty made a phone call to the hotel. We were told to wait 5 minutes and true enough a jeep came over to fetch us to the hotel.

First timers take note - you get dropped off at the terminal and you report to the tourist information office and they would inform the hotel of your arrival and would send someone to pick you up.

The hotel was located up on a slope af a fairy chimney close to the town's centre. We received a very warm welcome from Ozzy the co-owner of the hotel's restaurant. Our initial anxiety of our arrival at the terminal was quickly forgotten with the ever highly enthusiastic and very energetic Ozzy chatting us up during breakfast. He even briefly gave a summary of the tour we were about to take the same morning and that helped us to mentally prepare ourselves for the day.

We were given a dugout cabin/cave room with no window. The big terrace attached with a view of the whole valley of Goreme easily compensated for the lack of direct sunlight into the room. The room was big enough for the three of us and was equipped with a small TV but there was no signal for wifi. The beds were big and the sheets clean. The bathroom was of medium size, well maintained and furbished with almost new towels! We slept well and did not have any problem with the temperature.

We took Ozzy's offer of a barbecue dinner for 20TL/pax for the evening. It turned out to be a feast of deliciously prepared chicken barbecue and other local delicacies. Ozzy had 20 years of training in the art of culinary! Note - Request Ozzy for his barbecue chicken dinner, you will not regret it! After dinner we had tea in the dugout part of the hotel's cosy lounge. The wifi was good both there and at the dining area.

Breakfast was standard and hot Turkish tea was free all day long. We wished we had stayed longer at Lalezar and would really like to know Ozzy and his team better. This was not a 5 star hotel, and we didn't expect it to be, but the charm, the enthusiasm and the extra hospitality offered by the staffs and the owners were enough for us to want to come back to this hotel.

If you're for the hospitality of the people rather than the facilities, we would recommend Lalezar for you.

Room Tip: Try Ozzy's barbecue chicken!
