Owner description: Site of the heroic siege in in Homer's Iliad, Troy (Truva in Turkish, Ilion in Greek) was excavated in the 1870s by Heinrich Schliemann. He uncovered civilizations dating back 5,000 years, including best-preserved Roman architecture. Explanatory materials at the site are limited, so visitors should bring a good history text or hire a guide.

I used Eyewitness Travel http://www.eyewitnessturkey.com/index.html for my tour to Troy. They arranged an amazing day tour for me so I could go see the ancient ruins. From beginning to end the trip was perfect. The food was incredibly, the tour guides friendly and knowledgeable and the site itself is amazing. It is unbelievable that there is still so much to be uncovered, but what they have found gives you a wonderful idea of the history that unfolded over the years in that place. You can even see the island the greeks hid behind while they waited for the horse to be dragged up the ramp. And the ruins are complete enough that you get a perfect idea of how things must have looked back then.

Whilst it was a shame that the replica Trojan horse was covered up for maintenance, we enjoyed the rest of the place almost to ourselves (and a few courting tortoises!). We visited on a beautiful March day when the sun was shining brightly and it was lovely to wander around the ruins and see what had been there before all those years ago. The history of the place is crazy to imagine with ruins dating from 3000BC! The Odeon was particularly interesting, but our small group just found the whole, quiet, experience very good and were glad we weren't there in peak season.

The modern Trojan horse was under re-construction when we were there (we saw it more than a decade earlier). The site is interesting for lovers of Homer and history, but Ephesus, Hierapolis, and even Aphrodisias are more beautiful. Worth a stop if it is on your way.

If you're in the area check it out, but it's not worth a special trip to see. There are much better ruins in Turkey! Try Ephesus if you want to see something truly wonderful.
