The hotel is situated down a sweeping drive off the main dual carriageway into Kusadasi, about 5kms away. Once inside the hotel grounds the road noise is negligible and as the hotel is set fronting the beach, is not an inhibiting feature. The spacious and elegant lobby is equalled in style by the professionalism and friendliness of the receptionists. Your luggage is taken to your room, as you check in.
We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a Suite due to overbooking, and the hotel was at full capacity. Our lounge and separate bedroom had two balconies overlooking the side of the hotel and the sea, one for morning and one for the afternoon and evening sun. The first thing that struck me was the exceptional cleanliness and the spaciousness of the bathrooms. Our two teenage boys had camp beds made up in the lounge with a separate toilet off. Our bedroom had an ample ensuite, very clean, but the shower did not come up to 5* standard. Wardrobe space for hanging and folding clothes was more than sufficient, and contained a safe for valuables. A complimentary basket of fruit and bottle of wine completed the welcome.
The hotel operates an 'all-inclusive' package, but you are not forced to wear ghastly wristbands indicating your status, you are simply issued with credit card type authorisation, and, whilst you are advised to keep the cards on you at all times, no-one asked to see ours the entire week. There is a large, elegant dining area housing multiple buffet stations, with every choice of salad, and hot and cold dishes, a sizeable outside dining area overlooking the sea and aparty to spectacular sunsets, with bbq choices in the evening, the fresh fish was just stunning. All complimented by immaculate linen, crockery and cutlery. At breakfast the bbq stations became egg stations, omelette or fried. Breakfast choices inside covered every possible palate. Cereals, fruit, cheese, meat, a vast array of pastries, bread, jam and juices, coffee and a wide selection of teas, along with the usual suspects of sausage, scrambled or hard boiled egg, French toast and the very popular pancakes. The hotel also offers an 'a la carte' dining choice in the evening, you may choose from 'the fish/seafood restaurant’, 'the international' featuring a choice of European cuisine, and 'Turkish'. These can all be booked at the guest relations desk in the lobby. We sampled the Turkish restaurant on our last night and it was very good. Lovely succulent chunks of lamb in a rich tomato sauce and a rich yoghurt dip with warm unleavened bread were the highlights. Definitely 5*.
We found the not so 5* aspect of dining at lunchtime in the shape of the pizza/burger almost fast food, plastic restaurant by the pool. Avoid at all costs. The pizza was just about edible, the burgers looked horrible and the chips a soggy mess. The staff were totally indifferent and keen for you to leave as soon as you could. Which brings up the issue of service. It was variable. 5* treatment from reception, with a smile, no query too much trouble, car hire was organised efficiently and effectively. Equally at the guest relations desk, superb efficient and friendly service. The waiting staff, a different matter. There was certainly an element of a surly, almost recalcitrant manner at first, with some of the staff. However, if one is persistent with a smile and an effort to say thank you in Turkish
every time, once they start to get to know you, their manner thaws. It certainly isn't like that with all the staff, and really shouldn't be necessary at all. Having said that, the hotel was at full stretch, and each waiter worked every shift, and at no time did we feel neglected or badly served.
The hotel has 3 pool areas and a 'beach side'. We found the areas around the main pool, with separate shallow childrens' pool, very crowded, beds elbow to elbow. A separate pool off to the right, seemed slightly less crowded, but still overly occupied. We preferred the beach area, a platform of sand, fronted by a stone pathway with steps down into the very clear, clean sea. This is not a beach for small children. The steps are ladder steps, like those you find in swimming pools, and you are immediately in over a metre in depth. The beach is served by a bar and with volley ball and petanque to hand on shore and jet ski, inflatable rides, water-skiing, paragliding and scuba diving all on offer (jet ski and inflatable cost TL20 for a generous 15 mins), there is a lot to do. And more importantly lie back and watch!! I thought the noise of the jet ski might be intrusive, but they have to go far out into the bay before they can let rip, so minimal noise pollution.
A jetty leads out from the walkway and for a section of this you can relax on bean bags, watching the sea life drift under you. The far section of the jetty houses four cabanas, wooden structures with a coconut matting roof, complete with sun beds, fan, minibar, daybeds, floaty curtains and the service of a barman who will replenish your drinks hourly and also brings fresh fruit at midday and ice-cream around four. All for 50 euro for the day. Definitely worth a little last day decadence.
Another decadence is the wonderful spa in the hotel. I took advantage of a special offer to have a full Turkish spa experience for 60 euros. It was just brilliant. Scrubbed and rubbed, and massaged and rested then cleansed and massaged again, I even fell asleep!! There are many different packages the spa offers, just ran out of time to try them all.
The Hotel is ideally positioned to be close enough to, but far enough from the delights of Kusadasi. It is a short taxi ride (always taxis at the end of the drive 20TL) into town, or experience a dolman, for half the price. We went at 10 in the morning for my husband to have a Turkish barber experience, yes, they even waxed his ears. Kusadasi has been called a brash Las Vegas but we certainly didn't see that side, but neither did we venture in at night. It was a delight to barter in the shops, no offense taken if you walked away. There is a huge market on Wednesdays where all genuine fakes are sold! A lovely diversion and experience. The hotel is also 20kms away from Epheseus, and other historic sites not much further away. Trips can be booked through the hotel guest relations, and most likely your holiday rep will try and arrange your trips, but I would suggest hiring a car and doing it yourself. We hired a car for 50 pounds for 24 hours and drove the coast road to Sepherisar, it was stunning.
Fantasia is a very special hotel with a lovely luxurious feel. The bar areas are tranquil and relaxed, there is nightly entertainment, including kiddies disco, set in the unobtrusive amphitheatre, you are not obliged to attend if it is not your thing, the belly dancing was good, in our opinion, the Mr and Mrs contest we couldn't possibly comment on. It made for a very entertaining and relaxing holiday. I would highly recommend it for families especially, but also culture vultures too, as it so ideally placed.
