“Old world charm by the sea”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

The Kismet's location on the sea is just perfect--lush gardens, expansive views out to sea, beautiful sunsets from the terrace--all make this a perfect location. Tough the hotel rooms are a bit dated and the bathrooms could use a bit of sprucing, they were nevertheless spacious, clean, and comfortable.

A short walk into the center of town and you are back into the hustle bustle of a seaside vacation spot.

My wife and I checked into Kismet a few weeks ago, after I had been released from hospital for a brain injury. It was just the best place to recover, it's stunning to look at, the rooms are immaculate and the ambience and history of the hotel set it miles apart from anywhere else I've ever stayed. The views are incredible, and with all the trees and shade its like an oasis on the coast.

But what really makes it is the staff who were so hospitable, sensitive to our needs, went out of their way to help us and were always concerned as to how I was getting on. I don't want to offend anybody by forgetting their names but in particular Ata, Sherif, Ozman, Ugur and Mustafah, the other man and lady on reception, the beach bar manager, and the owners were just the most fantastic people, always on hand to help, chat and make our stay the best it could be. All of this is reflected in the kind of people who come and stay, all of which were equally friendly and polite. It's so understandable why people come back year after year, and we'll definitely be back for another visit, we feel like we've met some lovely friends.

First impressions of the Kismet are excellent, an entrance thought lush gardens, a huge comfortable lobby with a parrot in the corner, seats a plenty. It is going back to a leisurely style of life. The staff are polite and helpful. We were upgraded to a suite of ample size (we were a party of three) with a balcony overlooking the sea. There was great attention to many details - like Kismet covers to every cup and glass, and a little bowl of sweets. But not to everything. Where is the safe deposit box? There is none. At reception there a quite large safe deposit room like going to an old bank - very quaint but no real substitute for the convenience of locking away passports etc in the room. I was told some had been bought to be installed in rooms (they were stacked in the safe deposit room) but had not been installed. There is no hotel directory in the room - only by chance walking through the huge garden did I find the delightful bar and restaurant hidden below the garden, overlooking the water. The swimming pool is quite a walk from the hotel main building and again only found by chance. It was large, inviting but empty of people. Breakfast was rather poor one day and rather good the next. The Kismet has installed wi-fi. It is rather variable as to speed, and sometimes dropped off altogether.

I liked the hotel for its traditional ambiance and style. I would return for the peace and space if I were in that part of the world. But the word that comes to mind about it is "tragic". Such a wonderful location, physical space and potential - if just a small amount of modern management and facilities were added to the mix if would deserve all five stars.

My husband and I stayed at Kismet for one night recently. We loved our experience. We were given a room with a sea view and a balcony which is the perfect place to watch the beautiful sunset. The room was renovated which is very important for us. I am not sure if my experience would have been so great if we were staying in one of the older rooms mentioned in other reviews (but who knows...). My husband's family was visiting from the US for a day so we spent the day at the hotel, which is when I appreciated the hotel the most. The garden is gorgeous and very well maintained. We had a birthday lunch in the garden, which was perfect. The hotel staff was very helpful. They arranged a cake for us and set up a beautiful table. We felt like we were in our private garden. We also used the beach briefly, which was very peaceful and pleasant. Yes, the hotel lobby and the restaurant where breakfast is served look dated but I think that is also part of the charm, and if you go in the summer why would you spend much time in the lobby? Kusadasi is full of huge hotels with no character, which sets Kismet apart.

Room Tip: Renovated rooms overlooking the sea

As others have noted, this is not a new hotel. However, at the time of our visit it had been nicely updated while maintaining the elegant feel of a past era. For example, you can leave your room key with the desk clerk as you go out, and he will recognize you and give it to you upon your return. Since it is on a small isthmus, rooms on both sides of the hotel have marina or ocean views. The pool is new, huge, and ultra modern. The private "beach" is a pier and roped off part of the ocean that is fine for a swim, but it is rocky, no sand (watch out for the sea urchins - water sandals a good idea in the ocean).
Breakfast had an extensive selection, typical of high end Turkish hotels.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the free Internet service was slow, often to the point of being unusable.

The views and the service were superb. We did not dine there but were told that the dinner was terrific. Our room had a marvelous view of the Aegean sea and we were most comfortbable there. We were in a deluxe room and if you ware travelling with a child and can afford it, I recommend it. I don't know if we were in the new or old wing but we were quite happy in the place.

While the position is magnificent, the staff very courteous if not part of the original staff, and our room in the newer section very comfortable, it must be said that the obvious lack of maintenance lets it down. Having to use the " services" entry does not create a good first impression. The breakfast was very average starting with orange cordial for juice but rescued by the fact they actually did make toast! I would have loved to stay there in its heyday which unfortunately is past.

Room Tip: Ask for new section with ocean views
