“Great location, good food, limited air conditioning”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

Just returned from a two-week vacation at Side Star Beach Hotel with my family.
The hotel has a great location on the beach and within a walking distance from the Roman ruins in Side. Very good all-inclusive offering - the buffet had enough of variety during the two-week stay - nice fish and chicken offering, good veal and vegetables as well, good salad incredients. Some of the hotel evening programs were nice (Turkish night, African show). The sunbeds around the pool were mostly reserved by 10 am, but there were still available sunbeds at the hotel beach at that time.

The biggest negative issue we encountered was that the hotel limits the hours of the air conditioning. Provided we were in the room (and had our room key inserted to a slot that turns on the electricity in the room), the system operated from about 10 pm to about 8 am and then also short stints during the day, around midday and before dinnertime, roughly 5:30 pm to 7 pm. We like to eat dinner at 7 and then retire to the room to read around 8:30-9 pm, and we found the wait for the aircon to come on at about 10 pm very sweaty and frustrating.

Another somewhat negative issue for us was that the hotel is very German/Dutch oriented. Many waiters spoke mainly German, but little or no English, and sometimes we did not get what we ordered (drinks were served to tables during lunch and dinner).

The hotel evening programs were very loud (and some of them too geared to the German/Dutch clientele) - so even if you do not wish to watch them, be prepared to listen to them every evening from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm if you have a sea view room.

The family room we had was pretty small, with a sliding door between the two rooms. The second room was only big enough to accommodate two single beds (about 6 m2). With a family of four, it was adequate, but not quite meeting our expectations. The hotel has bigger family rooms available as well, based on the floor plan, but the number of those is smaller. Our view was great though from our fourth floor room that was facing the sea, and we could watch the evening programs from our windows and balcony when we did not want to stay down in the pool bar area to watch the shows.

The staff was unbelievably accomodating. The guy who picked us up at the airport spoke almost no English. He realized, however, that I was not feeling well and he stopped in a little town, on the way to the hotel, and bought bottled water for my wife and me. The hotel was beautiful, the food was good and plentiful. The carved food displays shown outside one night were simply gorgeous. The staff was great at helping recommend day trips.

We were the only Americans most people in Side had ever met. We had the pleasure of meeting people from Turkey, Syria, England, Denmark, Germany and Russia and were treated wonderfully by all....well, except a few nasty Russian tourists.

The only gripe I had was that air conditioning there isn't what I'm used to. You put a card in a wall slot in your hotel room to turn on the lights and airco. The airco is only on for imited hours each day....mostly when we're not in the room. You can't leave the card in the wall slot because it's attached to your key. So, at the end of each evening, we'd get back to a hot room. I'd turn on the airco and, as the room finally started to cool down a little, it'd shut off for the day. This said, our Flemish travel partners were used to not ahving airco so, for them, it wasn't an issue. Our trip was in August and it averaged 95 degrees daily. Takes some getting used to. I'd walk down to the big freestanding airco units in the lobby and hug them on occasion......ahhhhhh!

Room Tip: Actually, our trip was in August 2007, but this site won't let me go back taht far.

The food was very good, a wide selection of standard food. perfect location, walls are very thin, we could hear the woman next door talking in her sleep. Staff were great. Plenty of Germans, afew Dutch and a handful of English, I didn't mind that too much, although all animation is done in German (I do speak abit of German), so we just popped up tp Shanty Beach. A great holiday. We put our cases in the luggage room on the last day, as we had to check out at noon, we were given a different wrist band, this means after noon, you can't go to the coffee machines, have a last meal before your flight ( we flew around midnight) and I thought the staff attitude changed towards us. So be prepared, I was disgusted at that, my husband paid almost £1,000 for this holiday, I just thought that was tight, I like Side will return, but will stay at the hotel we stayed at last year.

Room Tip: Go to Shanty beach or the Beach Garden for live music at night, it's English

Superb hotel in a good location just a short leisurely flat walk to Side old town. Food quality and variety of choice excellent at each meal time. There did not appear to be any restriction in the number of times your plate could be refilled. Added to this the snacks available during other times (pancakes, waffles, ice cream and coffee and cakes). Staff very with attentive and always wishing to please. We had a twin room with a balcony with a side view of the sea although there are many rooms overlooking the pool. The room was very clean, although the bed linen is perhaps in need of an overhaul sometime soon. Whilst the vast majority of guests were not British this shouldn't put anyone off from visiting this hotel, although the hotel could provide more written tourist information in English for visitors .

We recently spent 18 days at the above hotel - a party of 7, from 24 years old to 97 years old.
The hotel itself was very good indeed. All the staff were good, many exceptionally so, the food was fine and the facilities first rate. It was large enough to offer entertainment but small enough that my visually handicapped father-in-law could find his way around without getting lost. Access was easy the beach a very short level walk away and only an easy stroll into Side old town. It is well nigh impossible to find anything about which to complain - except many of our fellow guests. Any English speaker would be advised not to go unless in a group. The vast majority of the guests were German and, unfortunately, most were the very worst music hall caricatures of Germans. Coarse, crass, ill-mannered, selfish, noisy and gluttonous in the extreme. We were a large enough group to cope with this but 2 or 3 people would probably feel ostracised. It is noteworthy that several off the Germans were also just as disgusted with the behaviour as we were - the only saving grace. We have friends among the staff who we will visit again but if we ever stay again I will take earplugs. Thanks to the staff - but we also felt sorry for the few small groups who were, like us, out on a limb.

Room Tip: Look for a room facing the rear - sea view, not car park !
