“on a whole fantastic food and friedly service”
Reviewed February 4, 2011

We stayed here for a week after being told at the last minute that the hotel we had initally booked in Belek was no longer available. Nice clean hotel and on a whole friendly service but we regulary felt like we were the only british guests here. Some of the staff were unwelcoming and prefered to serve the germans before anyone else (one night at the bar a german couple had 3 drinks each and we were still waiting to be served). The mini bar was not always replenished daily, even after we walked to reception after diner and complained. we were assured that it would be but it didnt get done. Having said that I have been to Turkey many times and dispite a few niggles I would definatly recommend this hotel to anyone. The buffet food was faultless, always something you could find to eat and I dont think the food choices at night were repeated which was a great change. Took us 40 minutes to walk into Side old town, a good way to spend an afternoon. We were in Side 9 months ago when we stayed in a hotel in the center.

We stayed at the Melas for 3 weeks from end November to late December. On arrival at the hotel at 2300 hrs the front entrance and lobby looked gloomy but the room was allocated quickly and a snack was waiting for us in the restaurant. We had asked for a quiet room and we were given one on the 2nd floor, garden view, but the only view was the foliage of two palm trees! Then we found the bath outlet was blocked but reception soon sent a maintenance man to fix it, involving some minor carpentry, all at 0130 hrs! Then we noticed a toilet smell so closed the bathroom door before going to sleep. Next morning we ate an excellent breakfast in the dining room before seeing the charming guest relations lady to request a change of room and we were given a top floor room over the main entrance, mountain view. It was large, nicely appointed, spoilt only by the noise of construction work going on at the Village next door, but this stopped at night, fortunately.

The lobby and bar are spacious and comfortable but still a scramble for seats after dinner. The pools on the 4th floor with bar are excellent, adequate seating, service v good. There is a large number of sunbeds on the beach, we did not use them. The beach bar was good. At this time of year the amphitheatre and associated area was closed and the animation team entertainment was in the disco on the 3rd floor. Most of the clientele are German and the entertainment reflects this. The animation team were a welcoming group.

The food in the (self service) restaurant was very good. Annoying things were the few birds which flew into the dining room at breakfast/lunch and often made for the bread display, some of which was placed on the bare window sill which looked as if it needed cleaning! The waiters were quick and friendly, serving drinks and clearing away efficiently.

The rooms were cleaned very well by friendly maids and the free minibar restocked every day.

The weather was sunny at the beginning of our 3 week stay but for 5 days we had rain and thunder, only to be expected in November/December. However the hotel was comfortable, relaxing with good service overall and we were sad to leave. We would return, once the birds and bread problems in the restaurant are corrected.

Our journey home was horrendous with snow etc shutting airports in England, but that is another story.

Stayed 30 Nov - 7 Dec 2010. Booked with Thomas Cook.
Our party was Mum, me (Dad) and 3 boys 9,7 & 2, Immediately on arrival at reception we were met by the duty manager who said that as it was out of main season and because they had the availability, they were giving us a family suite (if we wanted it) at no extra cost as we had had to book 2 rooms, being a party of 5. The suite consisted of a fitted bedroom, lounge area with 2 beds , sofa (that made up into a bed) and 2 chairs. There was an area with table and dining chairs as well as bathroom consisting of shower and jacuzzi corner bath and basin. 2 Bathrobes were to hand. Perfect for us all. Because the little one is as quick as a flash in opening patio doors and getting out on to the balcony, we asked reception for some twine to fasten the patio together. Within 15 mins a duty member of maintainance came to our room and drilled and fastened 2 bolts in to the frame securely fixing a potential problem and giving us peace of mind. Each day fresh drinks were replenished to the mini bar, rooms tidied and towels replaced ,totally spotless.
The food was plentifull with an excellent choice at all times and boy ! are our kids fussy ? but they were more than happy . There are chefs to hand, cooking hot meals to your plate.Once your plate is cleared its whipped away ready for your to get your next course. Most of the water park had closed down for the season, but there were 3 indoor pools, table tennis and Kids Club. There was the one outdoor pool but boy was it cold ? Should you go , ask to meet Ebru. She is really lovely lady and fussed our boys all week, mind you they were the only children in the hotel ,but got fussed by the waiters and guests alike. Ebru is a member of the animation and kids club team and they were all great. Evening entertainment was in the Ambiance Bar being out of season,The waiters are really friendly, make an effort to talk with them and they will go the extra yard. Once they know what you like to drink at lunch or dinner your glass is always topped up.Everywhere is spotless, truly , always cleaning, The viewes over the sea are lovely from the pool area .Alchoholic drinks are local but Fanta and Coke are always to hand.with coffee and chocolate and cocktails too . It is predominantly German with some Dutch people, there were only a few British people here, we met some nice ones here and sure some are aloof but dont let it stop you coming here. Dont assume the Germans are the stereotypical people that get portrayed in comedy shows (It takes two to tango) Anyway we cant speak German, can you ? There are many Brits I have avoided over the years believe me when on holiday ! Obviously we had permission to take the children out of school explaining the lack of others in the hotel.Out eldest had been seriously poorly over the summer and all holiday plans went to pot, hence us having this one.. The walk to Side is about 45 mins leisurely along the prom / beach, dont believe 20 mins because thats rubbish. Lifts take you to the beach and promenade, the section of beach that the hotel has exclusivity on is at the bottom of the lift entrance and is fine, however wear something on your feet if going into the water as there are rocks and its very slippy until you clear the first few yards. When out about 50 yards the sea still only came up to my waist and im 6' 1''. Go enjoy yourself and have a great time.

This is the second time my wife, 16 year old son and his friend have holidayed in Turkey in October, first time last year was in Kusadasi. We decided to stay at Side as this was further south meaning warmer climate, and it was, 28 to 31 every day with blue skies and only one half day of rain that cleared by 10am.

The hotel is immaculate as are the rooms and the food generally very good, with a good variety of choice. We didn’t even get to eat in the a la carte restaurants as the food was so good, try the pool or beach restaurants burger n chips etc but very good.

All the bars and restaurants are waiter service, you don’t have to Waite long before you are waited on, at dinner I didn’t even have to order drinks, they knew I drink red wine and as soon as we sat down, drinks were on the table. Waiters are all good fun and like a bite of banter! Just treat them with respect be polite and well mannered, (unlike the Germans do) you’d be surprised just how well this goes down with them, you will be treated like royalty.

The entertainment is very good with plenty going on. In the pool side bar dancing every evening with live music, generally for the older guest who likes ballroom. At the amphi theatre we saw a brilliant production of Mamamia with dancers and singers, all very professional. On other nights comedians, singers and mime artists. There is also an outdoor disco by the amphi theatre as well as an indoor disco in the main building, although this was not as popular as the outdoor one.

Would I go again NO, why, because it is mostly a Germans resort 95% when we were there. I’m a bit annoyed with Thomas Cooke as they should have told us this.

Melas Hotel Side Turkiye. 07 to 22 Sep 2010.
THE PERFECT HOLIDAY 6th time in Turkiye
Having got back from our holiday at this hotel I can only say that Thomas Cook can assure its customers that anybody that stays at this hotel can expect the best. Arriving at 3am we were given a room where we were able to get some sleep. The next day we looked out of the window only to be confronted by a very large tree that covered the entire window and no view. At the same time we had a call from reception stating that as we had requested a sea view would we like to see the new room. This we did and were confronted with a view that we had requested overlooking the sea. The rooms were large and well equipped and the bar was stocked every day. If extra was required you only needed to ask. The place is full of Germans but if you are like us and can get on then there is no real problem. We made friends with one couple that came from Hamburg and although coms were slow with Sabine with the use of a laptop and Google translation we got on just fine.
Nothing was too much trouble and we quickly made friends with many of the staff including Sadat, Mehmit, Gargi and Filiz just to name but a few. The Melas is a well run hotel, very clean and the maid service was excellent. All the bars are open until midnight when after this time drinks have to be booked to the room number. This is nothing new for Turkish hotels. As part of the Melas group you do have use of the facilities at the Melas Villge next door but to be honest we were more than satisfied with the main hotel.
There is a Gala evening held every other Saturday evening and believe me they certainly pull out all the stops. There is entertainment at the village with the animation team with more light entertainment at the hotel pool bar. The meals were excellent and can honestly say that there is enough variety to satisfy all tastes.
If you like to stroll in the evening you can walk from Kumcoy to Side along a new promenade that has been completed. It will take you approximately 35 minutes to complete but it is well worth it after the evening meal.
There are 4 pools and the beach to swim but you have to be a quick getting a free sun bed. Germans will get up very early to get one and you have to beat them at their own game with the towels. The beach attendants played a game with the Germans by swopping the towels around the sun beds and even removing those that were placed but not used. You should have seen the look on their faces when returning only to find their towels on a different sun bed. They blamed other Germans for removing their property yet they had nothing to do with it. The attendant just sat, looked at us and smiled. Good fun.
I will not go any further but to say to Thomas Cook well done and we will be going back.
