“Excellent quality and service”
Reviewed August 24, 2011

We have just returned from a fantastic two week holiday at this hotel having been recommended it by friends who stayed there earlier in this year. We were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived to the time we left. They have taken “all inclusive” to a different level to most hotels we‘ve stayed at with food and drink served 24/7 by friendly efficient staff who have obviously been well trained to ensure that their guests are very well looked after. The quality and variety of food in the many different restaurants was superb. We cannot understand how anyone could find fault with the choices available as you could easily have completely different meals every day for two weeks and still not have tried everything!
The entertainment team were very professional, worked extremely hard and provided numerous activities throughout the day and evening for anyone who wanted to take part. The beach parties were great fun as were the after show parties and entertainment.
The rooms were large, clean, modern and well equipped as you would expect from a hotel of this standard.
We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to either couples or families and certainly intend to return there in the future.

This hotel is definitely not 5*!! There is extensive building work being carried out at the moment, this is right next to the family block. Luckily we were situated on the other side of the block, and therefore didn’t really effect us, but had we been in another part of the family block we could have been woken by jack hammering most mornings! To get to the family block we had to pull our cases along a make shift path through trees, carpet had been laid to make this task easier. But again, it isn’t what you would expect for 5*

The hotel is very large, and it takes several days to get around. Family rooms in family block are nice, basic, clean, spacious but again there is no 5* plush’ness about them.

The family pool is very nice and like a fellow reviewer has mentioned spotlessly clean, the slides a 1 min walk from the family pool are great, but not manned, so even with teenage children you need to keep an eye as there were no sign of any lifeguards.
Good buffet next to family pool, but rather than wait for a waiter to approach you for your drink order, it is easier, faster and less agro to walk to the bar and wait for your drinks. Nice touch is that they make fresh waffles at the family pool between 3.30 and 4.30, but be prepared to queue!

Children’s club came as a welcomed cooled relief from the sun for my 9 year old, never had to persuade her to go, she loved it and always wanted to stay longer. Very friendly staff.

Spa very nice, but expensive, you can get a turkish bath much cheaper.
Gym looks well equipped, but no air con, so dont even think about it in August!
Animation team put on some good performances in the evening, but nothing I haven’t seen before.

Reception and walkway area into main restaurant were very hot, air con didn’t really make a difference. The outdoor area of the hot buffet was also very warm when trying to serve yourselves your evening meal. Waiters were very busy in the restaurant but I can’t help thinking that if they just stopped arguing between themselves they would have much more time on their hands, there seemed to be a lot of ranks and internal politics going on.

Reception staff seemed ignorant and abrupt, it took 2 days and four visits to reception to get a second door key!

If you have any problems with walking stairs or you have young children in prams this hotel is a definate no no! If you are not in a lift you are climbing stairs, there are many levels to this hotel!

The food was ok, variable enough, but again standard was definitely not first class.
A la carte restaurants are worth a visit, service there is a lot better than the main restaurant. This hotel very much caters for the Russian market, probably 80% of people there were russain. All in all it was an ok holiday, but seems expensive for what it was, won’t be returning.

We appreciate our guests’ review of our hotel’s services and outlets..We just want to clarify a couple of facts so that their review would not be misleading for the readers who may be coming this month.
Firstly the construction noise that they are mentioning about took 3 days and has been done throughout a 2 weeks period so that it won’t be disturbing our Guest as a daily occurrence. And whenever it had to be done it always started after 10.00 AM when everybody was already having their breakfast . (Probably our Guest did not notice it as they were staying at the other side of the block as they have mentioned on their review.)
The construction mentioned is basically a roof extension for the Family block and Grand ball room so that next month when it rains our Guest will be able to walk through under that roof and go to the nearby outlets without getting wet .(during the second half of September we close the amphitheatre due to the wetter conditions and the shows will take place in Grand ball room)
Secondly the distribution of our Guest nationality is not as they mentioned. We had maximum of 20 % Russian Guest which are mainly staying in Family building area as many of them have children And they use the pool and other facilities there. It is %9 at the moment and it will be %1 in September.

Best Regards

We (2 adults/2 children) stayed at the Crystal late July. We had high expectations before we arrived after reading all the reviews. Having experienced 5* at the Delphin Palace (Lara Beach) the year before we naively assumed all 5* hotels in Turkey would be of the same standard.

On arrival (early hours of the morning) we were escorted to a room in the ‘new’ family block. As soon as we entered the room the smell of damp hit you and we were horrified to see the children’s bed walls were wet and cold and had flaking paint where they had tried to cover the damp patches, which were a metre high.

We immediately expressed our concern to the bellboy and after about an hour of ‘broken English’ conversation with him and the duty manager we were compensated with a suite in the older part of the hotel (for one night only) until a new family room became available. By now it was almost 5.30am so we would have slept anywhere. The suite was very old fashioned and if we had paid to upgrade to one we would have been bitterly disappointed – it was very dated. Totally exhausted – we just wanted to get our head down. The only good thing about the suite was the panoramic balcony.

Once we finally got a new room in the family block we began to relax and enjoy the holiday. The food was of a high standard and the complex was so big you could spread around lots and experience different parts – the beach was always a nice escape as there was plenty of breeze.

Entertainment was hit and miss! Don’t think their budget extended to hired acts every night as two or three times a week it was just the animation team on stage doing the show (their shows were awful - lots of bad costumes and sets, dancing and miming to Michael Jackson or ABBA). On the flip side the hired in entertainment was very good.

Then a week in, we witnessed some awful air con problems in our room. The temperature in July was almost 40 degrees every day. The only sanctuary would be your room (as the air con in the Lobby was virtually non-existent). Our air con started to be centrally controlled (to high temps that were unacceptable to sleep in), on some occasions it would not work at all. We complained over and over again to reception (who basically fobbed us off with a different excuse every time). We had engineers in our room in the middle of the night but still the problem was never resolved – in the end we simply gave up as it was impossible to get a straight answer, as their English was so poor. What frustrated us most, when we spoke to neighbouring families in the block their air con worked absolutely fine and they could adjust as they please.

The waiters were pleasant and worked very hard (especially Ramazan who managed the family pool bar – he was a super star, always friendly and never stopped in all the heat). On the whole it felt at times, especially during busy periods there wasn’t enough staff to cope with the sheer volume of people.

H&S wasn’t high on their agenda – the slides, popular with children (and large groups of men in the afternoon!!) were hardly ever manned by life guards. It was too dangerous to let your children use them alone as there was no safety controls in place.

Despite all this, we did enjoy our holiday and were fortunate to meet some nice English people in a hotel that was heavily dominated by Eastern European holidaymakers. Unfortunately the hotel came across as quite old and tired in places – and is in need of significant maintenance and development if it wants to retain its 5* standard.

We spent 2 weeks in this hotel. Last year we were in Sentido Perissia. They are near each other, Sunrise Queen seemed better from outside than Perissia. And also we chose this hotel because it had the best reviews here on Tripadvisor and it was nr. 1 on the Side hotels list when we booked the hotel.
We arrived at 8.45 pm . Immediately we were sent to have dinner, then we went back to the reception to get the room. a bellboy took us and our luggage to the room that we didn´t like. We booked a terrace room with seaview. It was so, but the musty smell in the room was like in a museum. The furniture (especially the sofa and the bed) was musty as if nobody cleaned for ten years and in the bathroom the ceiling was mouldy. I couln´t sleep, the smell was really choking. Next morning we went back to the reception to change the room. We told our problem to the receptionist but he seemed he didn´t want to understand what we spoke but he offered us another room in another block. We went to look at it but the smell was the same. We realized that the rooms on the lower levels have that musty smell, you can feel it even on the corridors. The receptionist offered us a room on a higher level, the smell wasn´t there but the room didn´t have seaview. It was afternoon when we got a room on a higher level. It was freshly cleaned when we moved in and we couldn´t feel the smell. However, a few days later we noticed mould on the bathroom ceiling. We showed it to the roommaid but she didn´t care. We didn´t bother with it too, because we didn´t want to spoil our holiday with the constant complaining. So, the rooms in Crystal Sunrise Queen are definitely not five stars.
Another weak point of the hotel is the cleanliness of the pool areas. The hotel has 6 small pools. Beside the family rooms block there is the largest pool with children´s section. It is clean, a cleaner boy cleans the area constantly but we can´t say this about the lower level pool areas and the indoor pool areas. They are dirty and smelly so we kept out of these pools. I could see only 2 lifeguards on duty but they didn´t care about the people, they were collecting the trash. There were no lifeguards even at the water slides.
The sea is fantastic, clean and shallow, it´s temperature is about 29°C in August. Some days it was wavy, we enjoyed jumping on the waves. There was no problem getting sunbeds anywhere.
The animation team was average, the morning game was OK but in the afternoon the activities were often cancelled. There was no archery as they mentioned in the catalogue. Once my husband and son went to air gun shooting but they finished it soon because there was an accident (look at Bowler022´s review). The evening entertainment was nice , we saw the shaolin monks, the Chinese circus, the samba dance show and the Turkish dance show. It´s a pity, we saw these shows in hotel Perissia last year. If we were bored in the evening, we went to Art and Culture Festival in Side, which you can see during August and September. The stage is at the Apollo Temple. We were in 2 concerts. The Vienna String Chamber Quintet´s and Burcin Büke´s jazz pianist´s concerts were excellent.
Now about the good points of the hotel. It is really 5 star in the restaurants and bars. I´ve been to a lot of 5 star hotels but here was the greatest choice of food in the main restaurant and it worths to go to the a la carte restaurants, too. Wonderful view to the sea, delicious meals and real Turkish hospitality. The bars also have a great choice of beverages, cakes, fruit and ice cream. There is a poolbar in the middle of the highest level pool. It is strange, they can´t serve coctails there, only soft drinks and you can´t sit round it. The most staff in the restaurants are very kind, except a bald waiter in the main restaurant. We were having dinner and he didn´t come to our table. We were eating the dessert when my husband stood up and went to get hte drinks by himself. Also at night we had to wait half an our to get our drinks at the Sunset view bar because the waiter served the repeated guests first.
Maybe it seems I wrote too much about the bad points of the hotel and too little about the positive things. That was our 5th visit to Turkey, we expected a lot from this hotel. We realized that a perfect hotel doesn´t exist. Each hotel has its own weaknesses and good points.
To sum up, Crystal Sunrise Queen was the best in food, the worst in room. Despite my negative opinions I recommend the hotel. Try to book a family room or a suites. I would go back to the hotel in case I was sure I got a nice clean room with a better internet connection because it was very slow during our 2 weeks stay and there were 5 days when we weren´t able to connect on the Internet at all.
One of the waiters told us, the hotel will be closed during the winter months. A new block with 70 rooms is going to be built. They have already started to build something...
I hope they will improve...

The hotel has gone down hill since we have been going for many years before. We have been to this hotel for six years and we think that some aspects have got worse. The hotel has joined a group called crystal hotels but before it was just a individual hotel and that was when the hotel was better. Now the hotel has also got too big now they have build the family apartments 2 years ago. Also the hotel wristbands are not working as they should as under age children are being given alcohol when they shouldn't, it is to easy for young children that are under age to get alcohol and this should be looked into and tightened. The animation team were good especially Mahir as he was good and funny to talk to. The room was not 5 star quality as there was problems with the room such as the bathroom light as it was going on and off and it was flashing like a disco when we were trying to sleep which was very disturbing. The food at night is too repetitive and gets boring but for the first few days of your holiday it is good because it is different but when it gets to the end of your holiday the food is boring as you are having the same food all the time. But overall the hotel is nice and we would go back.

We loved this hotel so much we are coming back this year to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The staff are so nice and all the bars are all inclusive no matter which one you go to, the restaurant is magnificent every night a different banquet a feast for your eyes, the food is excellent! The breakfast area is so nice as is the lunch time restaurant and the evening restaurant are all in three different places, the room was modern and comfortable with the mini bar stocked daily all inclusive too. The sea view from the balcony was like a picture postcard the beach is blue flag and immaculate. There are so many different pool areas peaceful and quite but too cold for me in October (not for my husband) but the inside pool was warm with open patio doors so you still got the sun. It’s not an adult only hotel but in October when we go it’s peaceful as the children are back to school usually. I have only one complaint the night time entertainment could be a little better. All in all the hotel is spotless and clean and I am very much looking forward to coming back this year as it is a pleasure to be in this hotel it’s in a great location with only a twenty minute stroll to the beautiful ancient ruins little harbor town of Side with masses of shops, bars and lots of different restaurants.
