“Perfect base to enjoy Kalkan & surrounds - just not any good for sand running”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

1st time in Kalkan, and Korsan epitomises why so many people seem to return to the town and this hotel year after year. The Korsan staff are friendly, helpful and make you feel right at home. For self caterers, Korsan is perfectly well equipped, comfortable and despite being a 10 minute walk from the town, restaurants , harbour and beach, is extremely quiet. 2 small pools allow ample opportunity to cool off, hammocks make for a great snooze and just try Yasar's mint lemonade poolside. He does a mean Turkish barbecue too.
Kalkan has over 200 restaurants, pretty much most of which are worth a visit. Very reasonable prices and great if you want to do the Brits abroad Full English breakfast thing or if like us you come on holiday to experience local customs, cuisine etc. The Turks are appreciative and helpful if you have a valiant stab at using the language, but polite to those who believe that English is everyone's default second tongue.
The only downsides for a couple of sandrunners like us are: 1. Almost every direction is up, so hill sprints need to feature highly, and 2. The beach is pretty short, mostly stones and shingle; so no barefooted sprinting on the beach. Speaking of that, if you are a tenderfoot, worth spending 20Tl (about 7 quid) on a pair of surf-type shoes in one of the many shops.
Bound to go back; just may try running in the water!

We stayed in the Korsan Apartments at the end of June/beginning of July 2013 and had a fantastic time with our two young children. The apartments are well managed, kept and of a great standard.

You can already find plenty of information about the apartments on Tripadvisor and the Korsan web page so rather than repeating all of that, I'll just try to make some comments about a few missing things or things we thought could be cleared up about the web information.

First things first, the web pages are accurate! There's some nice photos of the apartments on the web and I should say that the apartment we stayed in and the pool/bar areas are really like that. Our apartment, no 12, had recently had some work and so the bathrooms and kitchen were immaculate; they were tiled throughout and the walk in showers were a blessing at the end of each day. The only thing that I found inaccurate about the Tripadvisor website was that it locates the Korsan Apartments out on a pennisula of Kalkan and not where it actually is - near the centre of town with its supermarkets, restaurants and shops. This location makes the Korsan apartments ideal for a self catering holiday as it's only 5 minutes walk to the local amenities.

We initially heard about the Korsan apartments through Simply Travel/Thomsons, but booked independently and sorted the flights ourselves. This was quite easy to do as Claire, who helped with our booking, also arranged our transfer in to Kalkan and so the only thing we needed to worry about was having the right amount of sterling/lira to pay the driver (it seems that cash is king in Turkey). We are already thinking of going back and when we do, I'd book independently again, but perhaps the only thing I'd do differently is reserve a car at the airport as, aside from the occasional stray motorised scooter, the traffic was light from Dalaman to Kalkan.

As mentioned above, we stayed here with our two young children and Kalkan is a fun place to be with a family. There's a fine beach down the road in Patara, the Saklikent Gorge offers river rafting as well as gorge walking, the surrounding mountains provide great vistas for all, and the ruins are great locations for re-enactments. One thing we'd recommend is lunch in one of the surrounding towns such as Gombe or Xanthos - great food and great local hospitality!

Finally, the web information could never give enough credit to the excellent staff at the Korsan apartments. Ismet was fun to be around and Yasar was always efficient in his work. When we mentioned how nice the apartments were to them, it was clear that they were proud of their work.

So, yes, the Korsan apartments are fantastic!

We stayed in apartment 12 which has great views overlooking the bay. It has two bedrooms

My wife and I booked this holiday via Thompsons and it was our first visit to Kalkan

Upon entering our apartment (no.4) we were impressed as it exceeded all our expectations. All he staff were friendly and welcoming, helping us to settle in.

While the apartment was lovely and we were pleased to have a double bed, the bed was to uncomfortable!, but the pillows were a bit old. The (free) air con in the bedroom was very good, the kitchen was ok for a couple of weeks stay, but would have liked a toaster. There are a number of local supermarkets and the best was up the hill under the German bank, good prices and a good selection of goods.

The apartments were very quiet even the bar at night was silent which was fine for us but those looking for more buzz in the evening may want to head to a bar in town.

The location of the apartments is ideal, it’s just off the main town and you can walk in to the old town within 10 minutes. There are hundreds restaurants to choose from and the hosts are very enthusiastic to get you into their restaurant. They were never rude but did their best to persuade you. We found that if we said we knew where we were going or had a reservation they left you alone.

I can recommend Korsan Fish Terrace and Korsan Meze Restaurants also the Olive Garden Restaurant, Café Leon and the Alternatif Restaurants, both started by English ladies.
The main beach or should I say pebble beach is fine it cost 7 Turkish Lira for 2 sun beds and a parasol, if you prefer you can go to one of the beach clubs, there are free boat taxis from the harbour to the some of the beach clubs. There is a very good one just on the opposite side of the harbour called Indigo beach club is 20 Turkish Lira for 2 sun beds and a parasol but you get free Turkish tea and cake at 5.00pm.

We went on the following trips Kekova Criuse, Fethiye Market and the visit to Thos Xanthos & Salikent, I can recommend them all great fun and not to many in the group which make it more fun.

The transfer time from Dalaman Airport is given as 2 hours but it was less as our Thomson transfer was a minibus with no pickups/drop offs. The time driving to Kalkan is so worth it.

Room Tip: As the Korsan Apartments are in a small road all of the apartments are good we had number 4 so we ha...

My partner and I booked this holiday on his own knowledge and previous visits to Kalkan. Though the resort had developed and grown more busy in the 12 years since he'd visited the Korsan was just as nice as he remembered.

Upon entering our apartment (no.3) we were impressed as it exceeded all our expectations. The staff were friendly and welcoming, helping us to settle in.

While the apartment was lovely and we were pleased to have a double bed and not two singles pushed together, the bed was so uncomfortable! This may be a reflection on how spoilt we are with our mattress at home but we woke frequently during the night. The (free) air con in the bedroom was a godsend.

The location of the apartments is ideal, cutting through the old schoolyard is convenient (the dogs resting there didn't even look up as we walked through!).

The apartments were very quiet even the bar at night was silent which was fine for us but those looking for more buzz in the evening may want to head to a bar in town.

There are over 150 restaurants to choose from and so hosts are very... Enthusiastic to get you into their restaurant. They were never rude but did their best to persuade you. We found that if we said we knew where we were going or had a reservation they left you.

We loved this holiday. We had never been to Turkey before so Kalkan was recommended to us and it did not disappoint. Beautiful place. We did not have a bad meal in any of the restaurants, and there are loads of them. From the apartments it is literally a 5 min walk and you and in the middle of the town and there are also restaurants at the end of the street. The staff at the apartments are so friendly and welcoming. We were there for two weeks and the first week we went to the BBQ which is held every Monday night round one of the two pools. The tables at the bar are put together so you can get to chat to the other guests which was a nice touch. And Yasar (probably not spelt right), the Manager, makes a gorgeous homemade mint lemonade. We stayed in room 5 which was absolutely fine and has the most beautiful view from the balcony. We had a look round the penthouse (no. 6) which was massive. Rooms 16 an 17 have rooftop terraces which we would probably go for when we go again (which we will be doing). We went on a couple of trips, one to the gorge which was an experience. Prepare to get very wet and wear shoes that can't be pulled off your feet in water! Our flight home wasn't until 12.25 the next morning so we booked on a trip on the last day which worked out perfect. Its a trip down the Dalyan river. What happens is you get picked up at 7.30am with all your cases etc. A taxi takes you to a bus which drops you off for a boat trip down the Dalyan river, seeing the turtles. You stop off for lunch which is included in the price and then head off to the mud baths and sulphur pool before getting back on the boat and heading off to the beach for a couple of hours. After that you get on a bus and are then taken to a hotel right beside the airport where you are given your suitcases back and you have a room to get showered etc and have the room right up until you need to leave to go the airport for your flight. A buffet meal at the hotel is also included. It was a perfect way to round off a perfect holiday.

I enjoyed a week long holiday here in June 2013. We couldn't have been happier with the accommodation - spacious apartment, good poolside cafe and excellent location for restaurants and shops. All staff were extremely pleasant and friendly and clearly work hard to make sure guests enjoy their stay. We particularly enjoyed the BBQ (each Monday at the apartments) - great traditional food and an opportunity to get to know the other guests. We would definitely like to stay here again.

Stayed recently at the Korsan Penthouse suite (No 6) and had an excellent two weeks.

Firstly let me say, despite all my misgivings about booking with Thomsons, I could not fault them.

The flights out and back were early and comfortable, the cabin crew excellent, the flight deck crew friendly and informative and I must congratulate them on choosing children to do the in flight safety film.

Now for the Korsan Penthouse Suite. Let's get the disappointments out of the way first, no toaster or microwave so "self catering" is difficult with only four burners, a frying pan, a large casserole pot and a small milk pan. Next the private roof terrace, there isn't one, but there is a very nice covered balcony on the top floor with great views. (The roof terraces are on the Yeni Korsan apartments next door)

Now for the good points, everything else.

The apartments are in a superb position, three to four minutes from the town centre and over 100 restaurants, (visiting the Korsan Meze or Fish Terrace is a must and Bread & More on the Kalamar Road, about 5 minutes walk is also advised).

Next housekeeping: Ismet and his wife Mirriam looked after the apartment, wonderful friendly people, kept the apartment pristine, and nothing is too much trouble.

Next Yaser (pronounced Yasher) and Hakan looking after the bar and pool area and organising the BBQ night, so friendly and helpful. (Meals and drinks compare well with restaurants around town and you must try a Turkish Breakfast).

Finally Recep (prefers Reggie) the Thomson rep. Always available and extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

Round and About: Kalkan is a beautiful old fishing village, (although a little built up around the mountains) this does not detract from its charm as they are not allowed to change anything in the village itself.

Take a trip on the local buses, we visited Fethiye from the local bus station (13 lire each for a one and a half hour ride). or catch a Dolmus to Kas.

It is difficult to continue without repeating myself. We have been visiting Kalkan for many years, it is a beautiful place (well worth the nearly two hour transfer from the airport) and the Korsan Apartments is one of the best places we have stayed, (and that includes the top hotel in Kalkan).

As someone said previously, I should be giving it a poor review to stop people going and keep it select, but hey if it's good, say so, and if it's bad, say so.

Give yourself a treat, try these apartments, if you can get in. I have already tried for next year, fully booked in June. Happy holidays!!

Room Tip: All rooms are good
