Had a really lovely meal here during our August break. We're made to feel welcome; service was excellent. The food was delicious and totally unpretentious. Loved it!

“Three steps to Kalkan Heaven!”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

One: go to Kalkan. Two: visit Begonvil. Three: go back to both. Repeat...

It’s good to see people taking the trouble to write up this splendid establishment. I would like to see less emphasis on “cheap,” though, as the subject of price in relation to Begonvil, if addressed at all, is best covered with the phrase “gob-smackingly great value for money…” or words to that effect. But, actually, why talk of cost at all, when the main theme here is the utterly wonderful quality of the food. And the setting. And the hospitality.

Begonvil was top of our culinary discoveries in our recent first-time (but-definitely-not—the-last-time) visit to Kalkan. It reminded us a bit of those Taormina “on-the-steps/in-the-street” trattorie, for those readers who know the place; only, a bit less precious, more real, more “street.” Begonvil climbs one of the sets of steps from the main walk down to the agora, that links back up to a higher, parallel, quieter street, into which the main eating section spills. Guests sit at tables which spread along the pretty street (which may be called “Kalkan Han,” if I’m recalling the sign on the wall correctly), the more central ones looking back down the steps, where the cook’s small – but wonderfully effective – barbecue sits outside the kitchen. The whole area is decked with the glorious, eponymous bougainvillea and is redolent with authentic atmosphere and tantalising aromas.

Service here is personal and attentive without being pushy: genuinely friendly and interested in your enjoyment of the fare and the occasion. The owner will come to your table and tell (indeed, show) you what’s special and fresh for the evening. Yes, it all is, actually; but be ready to make impossible choices between, for instance, bream, king prawns, lamb chops etc. It’s all exquisitely cooked and the flavours are just off the scale when it comes to spicing and piquancy. Our party of four got to swoon over several nights – yes, with all that choice around us, we couldn’t get away – when the skewered prawns and/or king prawns arrived, with the relevant dish of the unspeakably delicious sauces they make here. Marvellous calamari, too; plus, as others have said, a fantastic meze selection, mixed meats and so on.

All very welcoming and addictive. And, oh well, yes, you could actually pay twice as much for half the quality if you got some rare bad Kalkan culinary luck. Begonvil certainly will not let you down; and, agreed, other Kalkan eateries do set the bar very high. Rest assured that Begonvil more than achieves that level – and, for us, with a touch of honest, unpretentious, authentic, quiet, simple magnificence that puts it, as I said, at the top.

“Fantastic, fresh food”
Reviewed August 10, 2012

We first visited 2 years ago, and for us it was a must for a return visit. The food is fresh, the service good and it represents value for money. It's charm lies in the fact that it is in a backstreet away from the hustle and bustle. Fresh fish is on offer each day which will be shown to you. The free mezes and bread are delicious and are plentiful, no need to order additional starters. The cats who lie in wait for the odd titbit to be thrown, especially if you have the grilled fish, are no bother. A delightful place to eat.
