“Excellent value”
Reviewed July 6, 2010

We returned from Kalkan on 28.06.10 having had 2 weeks at the Samira de Luxe. Having stayed in the apartments several times previously we stayed in the new hotel this time. The rooms are spacious, well furnished with plenty of storage space, the shower room was well epuipped with a powerful shower, which is not always the case. The rooms were cleaned daily and towels and bedding changed frequently. The balconies are larger than in the apartments and the view is wonderful. The pool is large with plenty of sun beds, comfortable chairs and is adjacent to the bar/restaurant.. The meals were excellent, really fresh ingredients and were of good value. Ekram the chef will go out of his way to cook to order and if asked will tell you his ingredients for home cooking. The meals are In fact much cheaper than in the village, especially by the harbout which was dearer than the U.K. The bar drinks were competitivley priced. The staff in all areas were friendly and especially helpful, although there are no lifts we did not have to carry our suitcases and hand luggage to/from our room. We would also say that nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. The whole hotel area is thoroughly cleaned daily and we only saw 1 fly during our stay. Although rated as 3 * it warrants a higher rating
Although Kalkan has grown over the years it is a pretty village with plenty of shops and small supermarkets for self catering. The scenery is stunning both locally and inland and there are plenty of places to visit. If you are interested in history and archaeology there is more than enough to satisfy anyone.
Although there is a new road that will be finished within the next couple of weeks there was only a slight deterrent from walking into the town. From our previous experience of staying at the hotel the road is not heavily used and you can not hear it from your room. We hired a car and although the road leaving/returning was rather bumpy and steep we had no difficulty with the car, this will not happen when the main road is completed.
We are not sure what the couple from Yorkshire were complaining about, it must be that some folks like to complain about everything. In conclusion, I would recommend the hotel for value, cleanliness, service and views. I would not recommend it for children as there isn`t a play area and a sandy beach is a bus/car drive away.

Reviewed June 5, 2010

I have just returned from a week staying at the Samira Deluxe Apartments in Kalkan with my mum (i am 24). Our aim of the holiday was to have a relaxing week!

We had an enjoyable week and would return to the Samira Deluxe again in the future if returning to Kalkan. While there the hotel part opened (directly next to the apartments) and we had a look around. The rooms are very modern and I would probably choose to stay here than the apartments or even one of the villas.

Before I bore you check prices with onthebeach.com as this was very very good!

As stated previously there is another Samira Hotel in Kalkan however this is in the town area. It appears to be the same group but didn’t ask!.

Rooms: The rooms have enough space with basic kitchen utensils. Could do with having a toaster but this isn’t a major thing. We arrived last Saturday and were given room 101 - twin beds. You did have a lot of noise at night from people going up the stairs, Also the beds in the rooms were wooden and you could hear every squeak from the room above – without going into detail! The room had a view of the mountains. On Tuesday we were asked if we could help them and move rooms as the next people needed that room due to when we were leaving. This was room 204 which had the lovely view across the harbour in the distance. We were given the key but no thank you or anything for the hassle of having to move all of our things. While moving our things we could smell a strong smell of gas which was the gas canister in the cabinet under the sink for the oven. This was reported and it was disconnected for someone to take a look. I am now home and the people in that room today may not have an oven as yesterday it still hadn’t been fixed! This was a bit frustrating as we had frozen food so had to give this away as no way of cooking it. It was reported several times however nothing seemed to get done and I hope it wasn’t just connected after we left for the next guests. The bed was very noisy and was also a double bed so I had to sleep on the pull out bed in the living area (was not given any bedding although was told some would come, so had to go back to our old room and collect what was on my bed before). This wasn’t the most comfortable places I have slept however beats sleeping in a bed that squeaks every time you move! As we could live without the oven and put up with the bed situation the room was quieter than the previous one as you were not by the stairs so good in some ways!

Restaurant: We couldn’t fault the food or the service in the hotel restaurant and had most of our evening meals here as the value was a lot better than by the harbour area. After getting to know the staff and speaking with Hassan in the restaurant, he advised us that the bar and restaurant staff were new this season and also the receptionist advised on the day of arrived while chatting that reviews are read and listened to and the bar staff were changed following last year. We could not fault any of the staff at all and especially Hassan was very friendly and if there was anything you need to know ask him. He seems a very genuine person who is very passionate about his job and loves speaking to the guests.

Location: If you want to be more central then this may not be the best option however you can get around easily as the hotel has a bus service and a taxi back is only around 8tl (£4). You can walk it easily but coming back is harder when it is hot. Also they are in the middle of building a new road which you have to walk across so as it stands at the moment don’t wear your best white shoes! They are moving quickly from what we saw in a week so not sure how long it’s planned to take. Hassan mentioned that there will eventually be a bridge to walk over. The market is on a Thursday and is big but the prices are very expensive even if you do haggle.

Things to do: We went to Kas which was very nice and also Patara Beach is a stunning 18km long sandy beach and if the sun isn’t shining in Kalkan it will be there (well it was for us!). You can walk quite far out and still be waist high so ideal for children. As its open the waves are quite big. It cost 5tl from the bus station which is just down from the hotel then you have to pay the same again to enter. It is worth it!

Kalkan: No street is flat so be prepared to walk up a hill. The town is very pretty and at night it looks beautiful. The beach is pebble and very cold! Within our week we met several people who return to Kalkan on a regular basis some for weeks at a time so there must be something about it. There is also a lot to see and do around the area but we didn’t get that far but a good excuse to come back! Plenty of restaurants and you don’t get the hassle as some other places. Also taxis are metered so as long as you check this and ask for rough price should be ok.

Overall I would return and this review has just stated my experience. Im my opinion the hotel is worth the 3* rating it has especially as I have found previously Turkish 3* are not always accurate! The staff are friendly and interesting to talk to, the pool is great and location could be better but not so far out that you cannot get anywhere – its good walking off all that Baklava!

Hope this helps - Amy.
