“nice room but breakfast layout could be better”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

We stayed in this hotel for our wedding anniversary on 16th of November for 2 nights. We had booked on Booking. com site and asked for the best room they could supply for our anniversary. We were taken upstairs to the room that led through a shared sitting area with large windows (which were open) looking down at the pool. The room was called 'ottoman suite' which was exactly what we had seen on the picture on Booking.com site. The room was large with a wooden floor and ottoman ceiling, it had a beautiful old cupboards all around the bed and even had a fireplace. It was full of character and an old charm. But the bathroom was a bit of a let down as it was very small and could be only used by one person at a time.
We went to the ballet and when we came back to our room we found a bottle of wine and some fruits left for us on the table. That was a very nice gesture. Thank you to Alp Pasha personal for being so kind.
The breakfast was okay but on the first day, which was Sunday, it was so busy that it was difficult to find an empty table and too many people walking around getting their food. The layout wasn't very comfortable as you had to go inside of the building to get your bread and the beverages. Would be much better to have everything together in one place. The second day it was less busy which was a relief.
We had tried to have an evening meal there on our first night but found that they had buffet meals laid out and a very strong smell of chlorine from the pool. As it didn't have the ambience for a romantic dinner on our anniversary we went next door to Agatha Lodge which proved to satisfy our requirements.
All in all we would stay there again, but perhaps not on weekends.

This hotel was the worst place that we stayed at EVER. We arrived to this beautiful museum lobby. Our VISA card won't work at the reception area even though we used it 10 minutes earlier and later that night at dinner. We were told that we would have to use cash. We were then taken away from the main hotel about a 1/2 a block away to a different building using the back entry. Up 3 flights of stairs to a dorm style room at 180 Euros. Nothing in the hotel confirmation and advertising matched. We complained to the manager who took us to second room that was worse. We were prepared to leave & stay at the airport Yes it was bad. Sheets stained, bath tub broken, room smelled of smoke, furniture that had Ikea slip covers that were so dirty and stained. The king sized bed was 2 single beds put together. We asked for our money back and the manager offered us for a mere 50 Euros more to stay in the Presidential House that had 6 bedrooms. It was an interesting house, but the cleaning standards were well below standard - I do NOT want to use shampoo and soaps from previous guests or yet see their finger prints on the walls and lights. The next morning at breakfast there were hundreds of people eating at the included breakfast. The number of rooms in the advertised hotel didn't match the large number of guests eating at the overcrowded restaurant. It was also noted that most of the guests that did get to enjoy the main hotel were with tour companies. Staff were overworked and not well trained. Also the pool was not a pool it was more a pond to dip your feet in. Thank goodness we don't find hotels like this often. I waited to write this review because I was SO UPSET with this experience. Time did not make me change my mind.

Room Tip: don't stay at this hotel because they don't offer the rooms that they advertise.

We booked 2 months in advance to ensure we had a suitable room for my 94 year old father. However, we were shunted off to another building with 2 flights of steep stairs, by the most discourteous bell boy I've ever come across. When we were shown our rooms we were disappointed that they were not Ottoman style, the bell boy rudely argued with me that all the rooms were the same. We showed him on our computer that this was not the case, he then raced off back to the main hotel, leaving us to cope with our baggage. (We had a lot of baggage and wheelchair) We were shown another room that again was not what we'd booked for. Finally, the 3 of us ended up being in 3 different parts of the hotel, especially inconvenient for my father. The dining experience was a nightmare, self-service split over 4 areas around a pool. I was terrified my father would trip and fall in! Cramped and crowded, rude staff (except delightful barman). Never again.

Room Tip: Sultan Ahmet room is very dark, even the bathroom. No views from windows and fighting cats wake you...

We had lunch here last year and fell in love with the hotel. This year we booked a night in an Ottoman suite( dinner bed and breakfast)..The room was the lovely.
BUT..ooo dear the food was dire, really bad..Opened one tray to be confronted by fish heads !!!!.The food was COLD..and the light was poor. The buffet was set up outside.. The service was the worst we ever had in Turkey., dirty plates left on tables, poured our own water and wine. Not enough staff to cover the restaurant.
Bottles of wine were placed on each table...I asked to see the wine list..Good grief..looked like ALL the expensive wines were put on tables ( very misleading).
I gave it 3 stars for the room only.

Room Tip: If you book a suite upstairs , be careful, lot of steep steps

stayed here with my wife for 8 days in october 2013 - very nice hotel with authentic charm - friendly staff - room large + nice + clean - very small pool + no sun at poolside - food ok but little variation: chicken/lamb and spaghetti that's about it. very expensive drinks: 3€50 for a small bottle water that costs 50 cent in the shop 100 meters further - minimum 18 euro for a bottle wine - close to center and beach

Room Tip: excellent for 1 week but not longer

We stayed at this hotel for three days in September 2013 and have to say this was the absolute low light of three fabulous weeks in Turkey. We arrived for check in and were treated "coolly". We had booked a standard room but were told straight up they were very small and we could upgrade to a luxury room for a fee, which we agreed to. God knows why we bothered. We were given a fresh fruit tray in our room - most of the fruit being rotten. After the first day our room was serviced but we were given no towels. After ringing reception three times, and finally going down to reception to see what the delay was we received towels, but this was 45 minutes after requesting and no one even understanding this was a problem or acknowledging this should be a basic inclusion in the room - as a result we were significantly late for and lost a restaurant booking. I asked for a map of the town at reception but after I explained we already had tours booked, I was treated very rudely and had to ask another person on the counter to give me a map which I was then charged for. Overall, this is not a hotel that is welcoming by any means. The irony is that in the room was a letter from the hotel management welcoming us as a guest of the hotel and stating "our professional and friendly staff is committed to ensuring that your stay is both enjoyable and comfortable". Further, the letter states that the hotel has a commitment to ensure freindly, courteous service and to provide a clean, comfortable room where everything is in working order. Well clearly all the friendly, courteous and professional staff were rostered off for the three days we were there because nothing was friendly or enjoyable about our stay and the room standards left a lot to be desired!

You have to be aware, as we were, that not all rooms are in the main building. However, we did not expect a 5 minute walk from reception and to shown in to a pokey little room with ill-fitting furniture that seemed to be nothing more than the second bedroom in a half-forgotton 2-bedroom apartment! My fiance pretty much burst into tears and I was quite ready to have a major sense of humour failure. Back at reception they very quickly and politely re-allocated us to a room in keeping with expectations and although we had to pay another 125 Euros to get the room that I'm pretty certain we were entitled to in the first place, I was persuaded by Madam to let it go. However, on at least three further occasions during the week we were there, we saw new arrivals being taken off in the direction of "that room" and a little while later return to reception looking thouroughly disgruntled. So, you have been warned.

However, having got over that particular upset, we found ourselves in a really very nice clean and spacious room (althoough we very quickly gave up on the idea of getting the jacuzzi to work), right next door to the main hotel, overlooking a pleasent square, in an excellent central location within Kaleici, which turned out to be an ideal base for our week there. I would probably rate Alp Pasa as "Very Good", except for the fact that after the first 10 minutes there it was within a whisper of being a holiday-ruining disaster, that I suspect that I'm not the only one to have had that experience and it is something that the hotel management simply shouldn't allow to happen.

Room Tip: Be very sure which grade of room you've booked and complain immediately if the room you are show...
