We walked to the gate from our B&B in the heart of Antalya's Old Town. The triple-arched gate was constructed to welcome the traveling Emperor Hadrian, who visited Antalya in the year 130 A.D. and it is in excellent condition again, having been later enclosed in city walls and only rediscovered when these collapsed. To either side were tall square towers built of stone, the one on the right dating also from that time. Nowadays the gate is one of three or four entrance gates from the busy streets of modern Antalya into the Kaleiçi Old Town and one of the city’s most visited sights. A couple from Colombia took our photo before it, and we heard an interesting collection of languages being spoken.
