“RIU step up to the mark!!!!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2013

We were here for a week from the 14th April....it is not our first visit to Tunisia but our first to Port el Kantaoui and we all agree we would not return!!!!
The hotel is lovely but very tired in some areas...reception and bar area is nice and clean and pleasant to sit and enjoy a drink and relax after a lovely day in the sun, although we were very lucky with the weather the week we stayed.
Our rooms had lovely sea views though we did pay the extra for this, well worth it after seeing the view on the other side of the hotel...a building site and rubbish everywhere!!
You get an allocated table for evening dinner on a choice of two sittings...canteen style dining and very poor food choice...turkey every night in sauce, tasteless other dishes to choose from and good old rice, chips, pizza and pasta as well although this becomes a chore to face after facing it every lunch and dinner....salads choice not that great its eggs left from breakfast in a sauce and sausages too mixed with pasta with a few peas and carrots mixed in! Cucumber and tomatoes and a bowl of sweetcorn to brighten it all up!
You have to get your own drinks in dinky little glasses so you can spend most of your time going back and fore to top up your drinks (unless you tip the waiter and he seems to have your first drink waiting for you) we didnt and he never even bothered to speak to us! We like to tip at the end of our holiday if we feel like we have had good service.
The pool area is nice, plenty of beds and fresh towels each morning, we tipped the pool guy and he had our beds and towels ready for us each day and they will do anything to help.
We did quad biking with the onsite seller and really enjoyed it so we decided to do quad buggying as well a few days later....don't waste your money when he asked we told him it was a waste of money he just shrugged his shoulders and walked off....didnt really talk to us again once he had our money. If you fancy quadding walk out of the hotel up to main road and opposite is a place which is very popular and have better quad bikes!!! Used the beach guys and did jet ski, para gliding, water settee (brilliant fun) and bought the dvd photos once we haggled the price!!
Entertainment is poor, we made our own by playing cards and having a laugh while we enjoyed a drink and talking to other holidaymakers. Nothing for teenagers to do....glad we had the kids with us to entertain us each night.
It's a very tired Riu hotel and its a shame as it could be so much better....it is more suited to older holidaymakers...the marina is nice, Sousse was a big no no for us, got out of the taxi and got back in 10 mins later, nothing to see just a big market where we felt very out of place as it was for the local people.
We had a weeks sunshine came back with a nice tan but wouldnt return as for the money we paid we could have gone back to Egypt....give us a Hilton hotel any day...Riu you really need to step up to the mark and sell what people expect of the RIU name!!!!
Big tip.....men have to wear long trousers in the evening for dinner....my husband wears trousers everyday for business meetings he does not want to wear trousers on holiday they should allow smart evening long shorts as women can go in wearing skimpy shorts, skirts and dresses???
Was it value for money? We are still undecided?

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view...as it's worth it especially if the hotel is busy and you want to...

Really disappointed on the return from this holiday. Can't argue that the hotel was clean and most of the staff were nice, however there are some key reasons why I will never return to this hotel again.

During our trip we noticed items had gone missing from the room (small things like my partners make up) and then on our last day part of a souvenir went "missing" (part of a shisha pipe left in the sink to clean). When I went to the reception I was told to come back in the morning. In the morning the 2 reception staff ignored me to begin with then were incredibly rude and pointed me to the housekeeper who started calling me a liar. After having to go to the room with the porter and show where the items had been left I was taken back to the reception where the receptionist just went "no refund" and turned his back on me!!!! After speaking to another guest it seemed that they had found things missing including taking money from their purse!!! After thinking about it I am certain that these were stolen, however obviously the Hotel don't care about this.

The other major downside to this is the lack of entertainment. The animation team try their best but compared to others it pales in comparison and we spent most nights going back to the room shortly after the entertainment began.

Please take my advice and look for other hotels, such as Maharba Palace or Imperial Maharba (next door to bellevue) as they are much better value for money, and you will at least come home with the items you took.

This shouldn't be a reflection on Tunisia, but just on the hotel. I would not recommend the Bellevue to anyone.

We wanted an all inclusive break in the sun and booked with some trepidation, having read mixed reviews. If you arrive on an early flight be prepared to have to wait until after lunch for your room. Public areas are lovely and well maintained. We were allocated a room looking at the building site next door, but were moved the following morning to a large family room overlooking the gardens. The furniture in the rooms is a little tired but room was clean.Surprisingly bed linen was not changed all week but clean towels every day.The toilet was separate to the bathroom, which was large.Good selection and plenty of food. Staff excellent and couldn't do enough for you.Entertainment was poor although they tried hard.Spa treatments are very cheap.Beach was not good, but apparently it is cleaned daily in the summer season.Taxis are very cheap so it is easy to travel around.Port El Kantaoui marina is lovely.Be prepared to politely say "no" to the shopkeepers who keep hassling you. Would visit this resort again at this time of year for a cheap break - better value than the Canaries - but might try a different hotel nearer to the Port.

Room Tip: They charge for sea/pool views, but rooms on the outer wings either look onto the next hotel, or ont...

Me and my partner returned from this hotel on the 21st April 2013. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous and the surrounding area around the hotel is too.
The rooms are a good size although we booked for a pool\sea view and got a room facing next doors hotel and the tiniest view of there pool through a gap.
Our beds sounded as though they where broke when you sat on them and sleeping in them was a nightmare.
The entertainment in the hotel is poor at night and I wouldn't advise sitting in the entertainment room if you do not smoke as it can get quite smokey. the day entertainment was average.

Although I do warn young people who are going, even though I was with my partner one staff member in the restaurant named Ryadh harassed me all holiday, and wrote me a note on how he liked following me and looking at me all week and that he wanted to meet me. He also must of looked on the computer system as he personalised it and wrote my name!!! Im 20 and pregnant so as you can imagine I was quite scared and it ruined the last couple of days of the holiday as I wouldn't eat in the restaurant.
Also the bar opened at 10am, there was a member of staff on from about 9.30 and I asked kindly if I could have a bottle of water and he refused, I could understand if it was beer I was asking for but im 19 weeks pregnant for gods sake and need to keep hydrated!!!

Overall it was a nice holiday and most the staff where nice although I do warn young girls even if you are with your partner be careful of this man in the restaurant!!!

This hotel is older as the certificates and awards posted in the lifts demonstarte but the standards are very high, lobby area is very impressive and has smoking/ no smoking areas. The barman there is incredible and serves several people at once.
The entertainment is comical in its quality but they work so hard. The stage is in a room that is adequate for its needs and has a good barman who keeps the queue's moving fast. Drinks are typical all inclusive with beer drinkable, spirits a bit weak compared to named brands and wine very good quality.
Foodwise only the buffet was open but the food was good to high quality with a wide choice although if you are there for a fortnight it may become repetitive. This is the case in most hotels however and we rated this buffet as very good. There is also a chef doing pancakes outside later in the afternoon and these were a tasty treat with mouse designs for the kids.
Our bedroom was well cleaned everyday and we were happy with it. When we first arrived we looked out in a bit of horror at a building site but we suffered no noise issues - however ask for a pool view if you feel it would be an issue for you.
Pool area is okay with sunbeds a little bit cramped compared to some of our recent trips but nothing like Spanish resorts. The water was cold at first but once you were in was okay for a bit of a swim. The beach had lovely soft sand.
A trip to the harbour area cost 5 dinar in a taxi and was rather quiet but had some great yachts etc. We ate there and food was good - the pizza's were huge.
We did 2 trips - Cathage and museum which was interesting if a bit overlong, and the Zulu trip which starts at the zoo. The zoo is not up to British standards but the animals have lots of room. The Zulu and Tunisian dancers were great and there was food which was very tasty particularly the pastry parcels.
For the price we paid £346pp for a week this was real value and we will defo return.

Room Tip: Pool views would suit most

We have just returned from an 11 night stay at this hotel, 10th to 21st April and it was an absolutely fantastic holiday one of our best!
After a 40 minute coach ride from the airport, we arrived at the hotel and were immediately impressed by the very warm welcome from the reception and manager, drinks were ready upon our arrival and we sat in the plush, comfortable and spotlessly clean reception area before the manager gathered the new arrivals for a briefing of the hotel. As we arrived at 11am, our rooms were not available until 2pm but this was not a problem at all because you have access to all of the all inclusive facilities.

Wifi is available too in the reception area which was great for keeping in touch with home and checking the news etc.

We had a great room with a fantastic view of the pool, sea and gardens and it was a perfect to watch the sunset and rise. We were hesitant about how the weather would be as on our arrival, it was cloudy and a few spots of rain but after that time, it was pure sunshine, very warm/hot weather, temperatures were mid 70's to 80 degrees, the evenings were a blessing especially to cool off from the sunburn!

The food was amazing, all meals were very tasty, plentiful, varied, fresh and cooked well. The chef did the most amazing pasta and sauce dish, the waiters were very polite and pleasant to us, just a quick tip, men HAVE to wear long trousers, no cropped trousers or shorts are allowed, this applies only during the evening dinner so be warned, else you will be asked to change. The drinks were self service in the restaurant, soft drinks, 3 wines and beer, if you want to take alcohol then you get this from the bar to take with you.

All of the staff are friendly, welcoming and work so hard so a few dinars is really appreciated and they all deserve it.

There was entertainment on in the evening, we did sit a while to watch it but we preferred to sit in the bar area upstairs but the entertainment was varied from karaoke to artists as well as the animation team. The animation team also provided activities in the day such as archery, darts, gym, water polo etc and did their best to get people to join in but no hard pressure to participate.

The pool area and gardens were very clean, although the outdoor pool was chilly it was refreshing when sunbathing and once you choose your area to relax, a few dinar to tip the pool man goes along way, he will have your sun beds ready and waiting for you, this applies to the man on the beach too. Fresh clean towels are given for you daily.

And now for the beach.....what can we say other than it was such brilliant fun! We met some fantastic, funny people who made our holiday such fun and not wanted it to end, we had some really good belly busting laughs and the local Tunisian traders were a blast. You will lie there relaxing and see all sorts of items being sold, between us we kept the Tunisian economy boosting from jewellery, rugs, camels, Palmer palmers, kites, vitamins and bananas but the best buys were hectors sarongs! You can haggle with these traders and get the items for what you want to pay so take plenty of dinar and GET IT BOUGHT!

If any of you doubt this hotel, go and stay there for yourselves, you won't be disappointed GET IT BOOKED!!

Room Tip: Room 1357 amazing view of the whole complex and sea, large balcony too, men take long trousers to di...

Stayed 14th-21st April, A short transfer time of 30 mins started a really great holiday, approaching the Hotel it looks big with good sized grounds but the best is yet to come. As you arrive into the Reception area this is where it begins, polished tiled floors bounces the light around the whole area, separate sofas and chairs are positioned all around the vast lobby area with a massive chandelier. You walk past the large reception desk to the right hand side with very friendly staff on the way through to the meeting area / conference room with a short welcoming by the management and some of their team. We were the early arrivals so our rooms were not quite ready so we were able to take advantage immediately of the facilities of the hotel and the usage of the All Inclusive package too.

The Hotel has a large pool area with Sun loungers all the way around, Large swimming pool and also a childs one just to the side of it. Outside bar the far side of the pool with a shaded seating area, which led down to the beach a few steps away, this also had sun loungers for the hotel guests also free of charge. The complex does also have an indoor swimming pool and a gym for guests who wish to use this, all included in the package. Massages also available at a negotiable cost !!

The staff throughout the whole holiday were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble, so friendly, always speak even just to say good morning. The Hotel is so clean, rooms cleaned daily, and they even sometimes leave you little treats in the rooms. If its your birthday and you let them know they even do little things such as sweets or petals all over the beds, candle on the table for your evening meal and also the waiting staff will sing happy birthday to you as well. Very nice touches.

We found it a very relaxing place, sunbathing in the day around the pool, some activities for the adults and the kids are available from the Animation team during the day. If you find a spot that you like around the pool or on the beach, by tipping the Attendant daily (1 or 2 dinar) he can reserve that spot for you from first thing in the morning, so you don’t always have to be down to get that same spot. Bar area down near the pool was open daily from 10am (after breakfast service) for soft drinks etc, also between 3-4pm fresh pancakes/crepes were served (very nice they were)

Evening meals were served in the downstairs restaurant, a choice of the early sitting 6.30pm or later at 8.15pm, speak to the restaurant staff for them to give you your table choices, this is then your table on that sitting for the duration of your stay at the hotel – not always explained properly. Once your table is allocated for you, you do not have to queue to go for dinner once the doors are opened you may just go straight to your table. At 9.30pm daily in the downstairs bar area was where the evening entertainment was, this changed every evening and was hit and miss and not always to everyones expectations.

The lounge areas upstairs are very comfortable (inside and out), Free WIFI is available in the reception / lobby areas (can be hit and miss) waiters do clear tables and offer drinks service, tipping is standard. (1 dinah = 40p).

We went out and about a few times by ourselves and on a couple of excursions, Taxi to Port El Kantaoui (6 Dinars) & into Sousse City (8 / 9 Dinahs) Negotiate the price at the beginning. Taxis are available outside hotels and along roads. In sousse, turn your wrist band over and hide under your watch as some will come to you and pretend to work at the hotel so they can show you around (at a price). The Medina (big Market) in Sousse is an experience, if you want to buy things HAGGLE the price.

Market Fever excursion is very much the same BUT the market is better and you don’t get as much hassle but you must HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE. Also included on that is wine tasting (very good) and a lunch as well. Well worth the money.

For our entire holiday, being out and about, tipping, 2 excursions including shopping etc we spent about £230 for the week – very cheap holiday.

We will definitely go back as the staff we fantastic, hotel was very clean and all round a great break away, and well worth its 4* Rating.

Room Tip: -Pay for the sea-view, If your room is then allocated to face the side of Riu Hotel next door then s...
