“BRILLIANT!”
Reviewed October 1, 2008

Me and my boyfriend have just come back from spending 10 days at the Marhaba Palace Hotel and had the best holiday ever! The hotel lobby is very impressive as soon as you walk in and we had no problems checking in, the porters do grab your suitcases as soon as you start heading towards your room which was a bit awkward as we had no dinars as the bureau de change wasnt open. Our room was lovely and we had a view of the sea and pool area! The pool area is amazing and is so clean, the beach is about 20 steps away and has white sand and is lovely! You do get asked everyday round the pool whether you want to do any activities and they can be pushy but if u be firm and say no then its fine. The breakfast was lovely.. lots of variety and the evening meal was always lovely and had lots of different choices, our waiter was also v. friendly and made sure our drinks were on our table waiting every night! The only downside is that there is not much life around the hotel at nightime.. this took us a little while to get used to but after a couple of nights it was soo relaxing we didnt care! The resort of Port El Kantaoui is really nice and has a nice atmosphere.. be careful of the shops which arent fixed price as you do get hassle over buying things but again you have to be firm and appreciate that thats the way they earn their living!!! I couldnt fault our holiday and have even booked up to go back next year already... but for 2 weeks this time!

Marhaba Palace is well worth a visit if you are a first timer to Tunisia like we were. The hotel is impressive, clean, the rooms are spacious and the sea view balconies give an excellent view. The pool areas are good with a waiter service that is spot on. Hire of lounger pads 2DT per day. The beach bar serve excellent pizzas! The beach is very clean and the water is lovely and warm and clear. The breakfast and the evening meal are also superb with an array of dishes to suite even the most picky eaters. Room service very good. In Port el Kantoui marina (5-10 minute walk from hotel along well lit pavements) at night time, I would warn you that some of the market stall holders do tend to swarm you if you show the slightest bit of interest in their goods and if you decide not to buy anything some of them don't like it. You have to just ignore it as it is just their way. During the daytime they do not hassle you as much. If you have small children (we took our 4 year old daughter) the Tunisians tend to make a fuss of them and will want to touch their hair or face. This is o.k. to a point but be cautious as it can be a bit overbaring for your children who will not be used to this much attention. We did a boat trip (20 DT per person) to see the dolphins and we did actually see the dolphins which was magical. This trip is worth doing as it is not too long (2 hours) and if you do see the dolphins it gives you goose bumps to see them in the wild. One trip that I would caution is the "Camel Caravan" booked from a place by the beach bar in the hotel. Lets just say that the animals don't seem to be treated very well and myself and my family decided not to continue on the trip when we arrived at the "site" where the camels were kept (that was after the poor horse struggled to pull us all to the "site" in the first place!). We immediately took a taxi back to the hotel - in tears - and had our money back. The 2 mature ladies also decided not to continue with this trip as well. However, on speaking to the other family the next day they said that they thoroughly enjoyed it - make your own mind up. I myself would not like to be either a horse, donkey or camel working for the people in charge of this trip. Again, make your own mind up, but I would maybe book a trip through your own Travel Representative instead. Aside from the upsetting attempt at participating in the "Camal Caravan" that was the only blip in the whole holiday.

I am back from 2 weeks at the marhaba palace two weeks ago and had a great time, i dont know why people complain so much, it must be they set out to find something wrong with the place b4 they go......

we stayed bed and breakfast, there was a good selection but becuase i wasnt too adventerous with food i was happy with my eggs and waffles everyday.........

the pool was nice but of course the germans were out at 6 am with their towles, i dunno how they could be bothered.............

over all i found the hotel brilliant, the maids were really good, cleran towles and loads of toilet roll each day, the reception staff were nice and very helpful when needed. the guy who changed the money was nice and efficent and always got the righ tmoney becuase i made sure not to leave b4 i checked it.

so all i can say is if you want to go away for a relaxing week or two i would recommend the marhaba palace, fair enough there is not really much entertainment but this didnt bother us, we were made aware of this b4 we went so had no expectations. The rooms are clean and tidy, i did not see one bug or creature, (Except a lizard that came in thro our pattio door, but the guys at reception were brill in getting rid of it)

overall i would give it 9.5 out of ten (im not v fussy at all)

Just returned from Marhaba Palace and such a relief to be back !
The people were generally so rude and so cunning. Yes they smile and ask if you're having a nice day because they are constanly after a tip which becomes very tiring.

The staff in the Supermarket who would not receive a tip would dismiss us completely ! With no price given for goods bought and no eye contact at all - very rude and insulting.

At every point there would be someone within the Hotel itself looking for some cash ! From the toilet cleaner, to the Fitness Centre , to the 2 very intimidating and irritating men who sat at the entrance to the beach offering camal trips etc .. If you didn't want one of their services they were obviously offended and would keep on day after day every time you walked by them - as well as that they would make trips around the pool sunbeds - LEAVE US ALONE !! ....................We wanted to relax !

The Gym was not free ? In a 4 star Hotel ? I would have loved to have used it daily - BUT there was no air conditioning and was far too hot. Because I had made an interest in the Gym facilities on the first day the staff in the Gym continued to ask and ask and ask me all the time when I would be paying for some sessions ! This put me off going there even more !

The room was clean - as the maid KEPT telling us ! We did tip her of course - in the middle of the week rather than the end just so we could have some peace from the 'false' niceness !

One of their scams seems to be to leave you with little or no toilet paper - so you had to ask for more and they would bring some for a further tip !

You could not get a second key to your room - even though two people have paid for the room ? We think this was stop people leaving their key ring in the slot which makes the air conditioning operate ! - However, If you take the key off of the key fob you can do this anyway !

There are 4 lifts and at different times of the day 2 different lifts would be out of order - although they refused to put any out of service signs on them ! We thought it was a money saving plan and I think we are right on that one !

A couple of times we hepled struggling guests up the stairs with their bags - and didn't expect a tip !

The Breakfast was awful - not a 4 star standard in my opinion at all. It was always hard to find a table and the tablecloths were never changed between guests. This meant you would be sitting with someone elses crumbs and tea stains - YUK !

The coffee was the weakest, cheapest tasting coffee we had ever experienced and didn't resemble coffee at all !

The hot food - which was cold was limited to carrots and other mixed vegetables, but the omlettes were nice if you were happy to queue with the rest of the restaurant who were also looking for something nice to eat !

The juice as a weak codial juice - mostly water ! and you could have fresh orange juice but you had to pay ?? !!! .... ?? 4 star ?

In the evening Restaurant we saw two waiters finishing off some drinks that 2 guests have left !!

There is so much more ! The good part is the poolside and the beach area. The hotel is worn - especially the rooms and the restaurant - but they are acceptable and clean.

The Rep warned us the staff may be grumpy because of Ramadan and not being able to eat and drink - he was right !

I am VERY happy to tip for good and genuine service - but that is not the way it works here.

If you have booked already - you can make the best ot it - you may think it's OK ? But we have been to much, much nicer 3 star Hotels in the past.

If you haven't yet booked - I would seriously think again !

the hotel was very good in the respect the food was good and most of the staff were good except the very rude reception staff who talked about us after we complained about an unsutible room offered. once sorted the hotel was nice relaxing. entertainment poor and the main bar that waters down the drinks closes at 11pm!!! all in all i had a good holiday but then its my 5th trip to tunisia and i love it, i would think twice about staying at this hotel again.

Where do I start on arrival at hotel porter insisted on taking cases up to room litterally held his hand out for a tip not been in the place five mins..... The people are the most unfriendly even the sun beds that are supposed to be free down on the beach the bloke that carrys them down for you wants a diner each for every bed he carrys down.... The minute you leave your bed he whips it away woe be it if anyone trys to take them.... Free thats a joke!!!.
There is no night life at all unless you pay of course again 15 dinars to see the nightly show which in case one night they didn't show up on time..... Even the toilet attendant on site wanted tipping..... Breakfast only english thing really was an omelette..... The banker at reception desk sometimes gives a receipt and am sure he pockets the change always gives notes... So watch him.!
The food was always the same.... And to top the lot I have come home with dysentry....

However the maid that cleaned our room was always smiling and left clean towels everyday....
I would say 75% of our spending money went on Tips... One of the shop owners got nasty at one point because we refused to buy from his shop... He said some rude suggestions and remarks in their language..... Nice!!! And watch out for the jelly fish they sting like hell.... and the Ants on the beach too they bite.... So on that note I would never go back to that Hotel or infact Tunisia if you gave me ££££££££££££££££££££££££....
