This is my second visit in less than 6 months to The hotel Marhaba Palace. I have found the food plentiful and delicious and a fabulous selection each night. The staff have remembered me from last time and the customer service had been second to none. The entertainment team have organised volleyball,darts,archery and water aerobics and I have participated in each sport most days and thoroughly enjoyed them as well as having a laugh. There is some building works going on but if you have a room at the front of the hotel entrance you cannot hear any noise and there is light music by pool and that's vertically all you hear, my partner and I have had a fabulous time and would recommend this hotel for excellent value for money and the weather was great in October also.

Having been to Tunisia once before and stayed at the Royal Kenz in Port el Kantoui in 2008, I was a little apprehensive about going to this hotel and Tunisia in General, especially taking our 2 year old Daughter with us, however due to a hetic year this was really our only choice to get nice weather, which we did by the way. But my fears were completely wasted. We really enjoyed ourselves and I'll try and explain why now. I may miss somethings out but hopefully these bits may not be that important!

The Hotel

The Hotel itslelf is approx 30 years old, and to be fair in some areas is beginning to show its age, paint peeling off the outside etc, however to be fair they had began to start painting the outside of the hotel on our last day so at least something was being done about it. The building work at the back of the hotel was a bit noisy at times, but they are building a new hotel, something which cannot be done quietly, and during the main part of the day it seemed to stop anyway. The fact that a country which has just experienced a major revolution is doing this work should be encourged though shouldn't it? I can't understood why some people moan about these things, what do they expect to build these hotels an army of silent ants building a hotel overnight!!!!!!???? We had room 412 which overlooked the front of the hotel, very nice although some things were a bit shabby in the room, the room was massive though although it only had a tiny balcony, about 10-15 rooms in the hotel only have small balconys, we didn't use the balcony anyway with having a toddler, so beware when you arrive if you want a balcony make sure you get one! The hotel building itself is very grand and impressive an dominates the area's skyline, all the lifts worked and were fast and never seemed to be too busy so well done there!

The Food

Its an all inclusive, buffet style restaurant, what do you expect, salads, 3-4 hot dishes, cake and fruit for pudding? Well thats what you get! When we stayed at the Royal Kenz, we were half board and i was hungry all the time, the food wast terrible, most of the meat dishes were in a grey or brown sauce and tasted well of nothing. This place though is as standard as most european hotels, i put on weight and didn't go hungry, bacon would be nice in the morning, I know Tunisia is a muslim country but they did pork dishes at night so bacon in the morning please! The all inclusive drinks were ok, pretty standard really, I don't know what some people expect to get but you do not get branded spirits on all inc deals! They were strong enough anyway.

The Staff

Very friendly and really made a fuss of our 2 year old. Yes they do seem to expect tips, but until this year this was not an all inclusive restaurant. as the average wage is about £100-£150 a month, to loose their tips in a year as well, would really annoy most people which is perhaps why at the start of the year they were unhappy! However we left our waiter, 1 dinar about 40p a day and he could not do enough for us, drinks waiting on the table etc, well worth 40p a day, The aninamtion were friendly, not too pushy with getting you to join in things, i did volleyball a few times and was good fun.

The area

Better than the last time we went! People seem happier, more relaxed, a think a revoultion may have helped here but shop keepers seem to have learnt that europeans don't like hassle! The one's I spoke to did anyway! Try haggling it is fun, aim to get something for about a 6th of the asking price although if you don't like this there are a few fixed price shops to use, you get less hassle by the port than the fountains area of port el kantoui, we found this anyway. The hassle you get is no different to some spanish resourts anyway!

At the end of the day people need to remeber you are not going to a 5* European resort. Tunisia is in Africa, different culture etc and people need to remember this. It is cheap so do not got expecting the earth and you will have a great time!

Room Tip: Room 412 is nice and big, small balcony though, if you want a balcony make sure you ask for one!

Being a traveller, my friends and I stayed at the palace for the last week. Here's the observations that me and my party had;

Service;

I expect initial enthusiasm before i tip for good service, but it's as if some of the waiters expect payment before they show good service. I tipped enough and didn't have any problems since this initial hiccup although i'd rather tip after seeing a little good service rather than tip to expect some.

Food & Drink;

I didn't see anything wrong really, there was a nice choice. Maybe some of the food went a little dry. It's all inc though and it's what's expected when food is on platters for a number of hours to serve the guests. Breakfast is very much bread, potato and egg based. There are a number of cereals and continentals available but they really haven't got a hold of full english breakfasts yet. However, the lady who makes omlettes is somewhat a magician, smiling all the time and makes lovely food. The drinks are somewhat similar to strong cordial! Stick to pineapple or lemon juice as the orange juice tastes like over-strong thick squash.

Reception and staff in general;

Nice helpful staff at reception and the chamber maids were unbelievably polite. Animation staff try their best to get you involved but do not pressure you. The nightclub within the hotel has recently re-opened where the staff host a few specialist nights through the week. The atmosphere is a little poor and the staff have a way to go before they make these nights more appealing.

Bars and evening;

Bars are slow paced as expected and sadly ran out of some drinks during our stay. Que Sera sera - but some staff did appear to have a bit of a carefree attitude. I didn't complain as our culture is different to theirs and i can accept a slower pace when visiting other countries. There's not much to do at the hotel during the evening. A lttle cabaret but not much else.

Pool;

Plenty of space and sunbeds to go around during our stay. Nice atmosphere and a nice clean pool. The poolside music has a lot to be desired! 50s rock around the clock and similar most days. Upon having a conversation with the staff there, it was explained that the older guests complain when the music is too loud or not appropriate! In all fairness, the music was on no earlier than 10am and a consistent string of 50s/60s music did get irritating most days and i don't think i could handle "Tie a yellow ribbon" for much longer! My opinions were also shared with a number of guests aged below 60 with who i also spoke with who thought the music was a little drab.

Noise;

Ok, so they are building a hotel next door. Our north facing balcony faced the construction and they hammered from 7am onwards. I didn't mind as i wear ear plugs although don't be afraid to request a move. Persons i spoke with did this with minimal fuss and didn't get the noise in their new rooms. I guess this may not work during peak periods when more rooms are occupied. You cannot hear the noise from the pool side area - and those who say you can must have sensitive ears!

Summary;

We enjoyed. We accept different cultures and that things aren't usually the standard that we accept in the UK. There were some not so good points here which need improvement but hey, that's life! All in all, this is a nice hotel with many very nice people. I wouldn't neccesarily go back for now but maybe in the future after a while of developing. We had no complaints and found the hotel generally pleasant. Have no worries about coming here, be nice to the staff and take the hotel for what it is.

Room Tip: If you are not happy with your room then speak with the reception and arrange another. Unless your t...

Stayed at this Hotel for the first time from 12th spetember to 26th september and have to say it was Brilliant. Been to this resort 6 times before in different hotels and this one is one of the best. There has been a lot of bad comments about this holtel but they are unwarrented. I have a severly disbled son who is in a wheelchair and let me say there is no where in this hotel that is not accessible. The pool is clean and your never short of a sunbed and umbrella just a few pound to the pool staff and they will save you one every day. The waiters where good and did not always want a tip like some reviews say. The entertainment team work relentlessly to entertain you day and night but if you dony want to join in they do not badger you One of the best entertainment teams we found in a long time . All the staff from reception to cleaners where always ready to help and talk to you. The food was fine something for every taste. Breakfast choice was 5 star.
The only thing wrong with this place is moaning holiday makers who go away and want to pay a wollworth price for a rembrant hotel ..... lets get real people and give the hotel and its staff a break/
Already booked for next year with some great friends we met while on this holiday and my own family and grand children.
Well done Marhaba staff see you next July xxxxxxx

Room Tip: Go for swea view in the main building and a high floor / beautiful early mornings on you patio

Just returned from this Hotel, and had a thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing time, with some exceptionally hot weather.
Bad points the hotel is old and therefore slightly tired in places. Food is as expected repetitive, but always something to choose from.
Good points, the Hotel is very well located and just a short walk from PEK centre, golf course is also very close by. Hotel is on the beach and spotless, water sports are adjacent to the sun beds, the whole hotel grounds are spotless. Rooms are a good size with a fridge, hairdryer, aircon, and balcony. Waiters, bar staff, pool boys, doorman, bellboy, and cleaners all expect to be tipped a dinar (40p) goes a long way to getting you a prompt and efficient service. Sahara trip was worth the money, market fever was a bit of a let down.
Overall a good holiday at good price made all the better by meeting some very nice people so hello to Chris, Gary, Caroline, and Judith.
Would I go back Yes but we like to travel and see different places, but this and Sharm El Sheikh are probably on par and worth a revisit
