“Barry & Wendy's 2 week winter break”
Reviewed April 13, 2014 via mobile

We went for a 2 week holiday on 26 March 2014.This was our 2nd visit to Port el Kantoui Tunisia...our 1st visit was 15 years ago. 1st time at this hotel and we were really impressed for the money we paid. The hotel is immaculately clean, wonderful sociable cleaners with all staff polite, helpful and sociable. I noted the comment regarding the unsmiling receptionist,. I found her to be really helpful and she waived to me everytime I saw her. The food was very good, albeit a bit repetitive, but hot and lots of different options. We were in room 445 and it was perfect, quiet with a lovely view.
The first week was not good with the hotel packed wth Tunisians who were frankly disgraceful at mealtimes, filling plate after plate of food and wasting most of it, emptying desserts as soon as they entered the restaurant. I agreed with all the comments about these weeks in Marchand would never go again until April wgen their holidays are over.
Tips for you, beach towels are provided..you leave 20 dinars deposit for the 2 towels which you get back at the end of your stay when towels handed in. They can be changed whenever for clean and dry ones.
We were half board, wanted to upgrade to all inclusive but understood that hotel needs to be in summer period before they do this so it is worth asking between May and September.
You are not "allowed" to bring in any food or drink but everyone does, you need to take a back pack to hide the things you can buy from supermarket ner marina...they also sell alcohol here. We would recommend buying spirits on the plane or in duty free in airport when you land as it is expensive and limited in the supermarket.
We took travel kettle with us in our room, again against rules but it was a godsend when weather bit cool..you can get small longlife cartons of milk in supermarket.
I would recommend this hotel, cannot fault it and the position was brilliant.
We were however bored in evening as the marina and the square closed about 9.15 and the hotel eentertainment wasn't good and smoking in the bar and Irish bar put us off spending time in tgere.
Make sure you have change to give a dinar or 2 to the helpful and grateful staff..it goes a long way.
Reception organised a taxi to take us to El Jem..well worth the visit, cost 100 dinar and he .stayed with us all day, entrance in is 10 dinar each. If you visit Sidi Bou Said visit theTunisian house open to the public it is half way up the main street on the right hand side it is so worth 3.5 dinar.

From the 19th to the 30th March hotels in Port el kantaoui (could be other place too) are jammed to the rafters with Tunisian families. We had a dreadful experience with this and want to warn others to avoid that period. I could list a catalogue of errors caused by this but there is no room here. One example is the Muslim ladies go into the swimming pool fully clothed even though the signs up say it is forbidden and the hotel do nothing about it. Also the smoke alarms didn't work as the Tunisians smoked in the corridor and not one alarm sounded - worrying. The hotel cram people into rooms - 7 in the room by us should have had no more than 3! So, don't go in that period. Other than that a lovely resort and the hotel is ok and the staff are brilliant.

Room Tip: go for floor 4

Had a really good break here at the beginning of march. Ten days half board. On arrival you recieve a refreshing drink and biscuit whilst filling out your details. The reception area is large and Arabic style with comfy sofas to relax and chill out. Staff are all very professional throughout the hotel, they are friendly without being over personal. They work their socks off whatever their job. Even the lady at reception who doesn't smile.

Our room was 439 and it was larger than many of the others, good sized balcony with a sea view in the distance. Really liked the tiling in the bathroom. Good hot shower over bath. Soft fluffy towels changed frequently. Loved the bathrobes. Nice to have the toilet sectioned off from the main bathroom, although the air circulation wasn't great! Complimentary fruit in the room on arrival but didn;t attempt it as it looked too old. Mini bar in room didn't use. Rooms have fridges but to put anything in you need to take out everything from the mini bar. Digital safes in room. Loads of storage space. Found the beds too hard but by putting one of the thick blankets from the top cupboard down the bed was fine. The maid was super. She didn't miss a single spot of dirt and she always had a smile on her face. Could not fault.

Breakfasts were really good, plenty to choose from. From omelettes, fried eggs, lovely fresh bread, toast. salad, cheeses, pastries galore, crepes, freshly made donuts.... they were yummy!! Freshly squeezed juice and not freshly squeezed available. Coffee was ok. For the evening meal you have an allocated table for your whole stay which worked out well. The rose wine worked out the best value so we drank this most nights and wasn't bad at all, better than the white. The food was excellent. Spoilt for choice, not repetitive, hot and tasty. The Tunisian section of food was really good, since Ive come home we keep having tagines, Ive been inspired! You also have the same waiter the whole stay and ours worked so hard all the time. The desserts were amazing.... really really good. Come home 2pounds heavier!

Evening entertainment was a piano player each night, and his music was dreary and depressing. The bar was smoky most evenings but if you can cope with the smoke its a nice place to sit. They do better coffees here. There is also a shisha and tea bar if you like that.

They have a library which is also another place to sit if you just want quiet. There are loads of books that people have left behind over the years. They also have few computers here too.

The pool area and gardens are beautifully kept and spotlessly clean. They provide mattresses on the loungers round the pool so you can just lie back and relax. They also have waiter service round the pool. The sanck bar at the poolside is a nice place to sit and relax although their coffees were undrinkable as they'd used evaporated milk. The food here was disappointing, pizzas are poor quality - Tunisian mozarella isn't what we're used to. My husband had the carbonara it had to be sent back it was that bad.

The beach is about a 5-10 minute walk away. There is a route that takes you right to the Kanta's snack bar and private beach area but that involves a long path next to a building site, so we preferred to walk through the apartments then up the beach which was far more scenic. The private beach area was really nice, much nicer than the Marhaba Palace section. Mattresses provided and brought to you with a lounger. The old chap working at the beach snack bar is very sweet, his sandwiches are really good and will really keep you going til tea. His coffees, well you have to see them. The view from here is just beautiful. I could sit and look at the lovely sea all day! Like paradise!!! Camels are available to ride down the beach but remember to barter!

The location of this hotel is perfectly situated for shopping. There are many bargains to be had if you can barter and if not the fixed price shops are good too. The marina was really nice to walk around. Yes it can be a bit of a pain that everyone wants you to look and their shop, look at their menu etc etc. You just have to be resolved of what you want. We didn't find anywhere particularly good to eat in PEK, the food was poor quality, cheap but still not really nice enough to pay for. So we were naughty and bought bread and cheese and olives from the supermarket and sneaked it to our room, far cheaper and far nicer.

We didn't use the spa, the lady showed us round but it didn't look that great. The steam room didn;t look that steamy and we have gym membership at home so didn't want to pay. Prices I thought could have been less... I may have been tempted if the prices were lower. They were about comparable with UK prices.

Well, I cant think of anything else to say, just that we were really able to unwind and relax here, in fact we didn't want to come home. Thomas Cook were using this hotel for their pilots too as it's a great place to relax. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer.

We think the only major problem with this holiday was the weather. Last year we came in January and February. This year we thought going a bit later would give us warmer weather. This was not so,but there's nothing anybody can do about the weather. It was mixed, mainly warm with some hot days. We've been in the Kanta before and it's even better now. The staff are great. Soria in reception is very good. Our room maids were spot on and left our room clean and fresh. Nice large balcony. Always plenty of hot water. When it got a bit cooler at night the heater worked well. Spoilt for choice with the food and excellent quality. Always fresh fruit and desserts to die for, as well as crepes freshly made. The animation during the day was poor.
We were with two other couples so we had a laugh amongst ourselves,as the evening entertainment was dire. Some nights we went over the road to the Marharba Palace to take in their entertainment which was a lot better. A good judge of hotel is when you are asked "Would you go back there ?" We have and would go there again. You can't beat the Kanta it always feels like coming home. Travel can be expensive if you use taxi's all the time. To Sousse, for example a taxi driver will want 6 dinars until you barter for 4. A louage is only 1 dinar per person. A dinar is 40 pence when we left. It still sounds cheap at 6 dinar but we were there for three weeks. Hotel bar prices have gone up so we didn't stay up drinking all night. Overall a super holiday.

Room Tip: If you want sun on your balcony in the morning you want an odd numbered room. In the afternoon till...

We booked Hotel Kanta last year in May time with Thomas Cook for a nice hot get away, knowing how unpredictable summer British weather can be! Finally, July came around, and we set off to Tunisia.

On arrival at the hotel, after being transported from the airport by coach, first impressions were fantastic! We arrived late evening, and the hotel drive was beautifully lit with a lovely mini golf roundabout with lots of palm trees, and a nice marble arch with steps into the main lobby. For 10 pm there were quite a few people around, a mixture of older people, and families relaxing in the air conditioned lobby where there were seating areas and a bar just through some open double doors. Straight away, a gentleman came over and offered us a drink and a cold towel, (my other half and I had read about Tunisia, and how they try and make you pay for everything, so we asked skeptically if it was free?), it was! So off I went to check us in, while my boyfriend sat down with our luggage and had a refreshing drink. Take note: The lady at reception was a grumpy sod! But not a problem, she gave us a key and was helpful in explaining where our room was etc and breakfast times! Perfect! Off we went to the lift with our cases to find our rooms - Take note: Don't let the chaps working there take your luggage up, they will charge so I've been told! So we declined, afters some persistence from the guy, and went to find our room.

On first opening the door, we were very pleasantly surprised, the room was lovely, very big and the bathroom looked very Turkish and all was clean. Great air conditioning, good tv etc and we had a decent view too! Negatives were, the mini fridge did begin to leak during the week and the room service menu wasn't the best, but not to worry!

Food at the hotel was good - lots of variety, and interestingly lots of different foreign dishes to try. It was nice to have the traditional Tunisian cuisine with a mixture of pasta, pizza and chips too! Breakfast was the best, with omelette and Pancakes. Although it can get busy so go slightly earlier or later!

The best part of the hotel is by far the grounds and gardens with the pools! There was 5 pools, tennis courts and lots of pool activities, in addition to pool side bar/restaurant. The gardens were lovely, lots of space, flowers and hammocks to sit in a read and chill out.
The location of the hotel is great - not far from lots of shops and the port! There's also a fun fair every evening and there's lots of restaurants with different cuisines too. Please note: Do be careful when out in Port El Kantaoui in the evenings, there are lots of hassling when buying goods, and especially if you are a woman, the men can get a bit creepy and weird! There's a main supermarket which is really cheap and useful, and there's also a small zoo and water park down the road (didn't go, was way too busy) too. The Port is lovely, with very romantic restaurants and beautifully lit. Definitely recommended.

Overall, our stay was really great. It was our first holiday together, and we had a wonderful time. It was very much worth the money, and in additional everything is so cheap out there that it's exciting to bring back lots of little souvenirs! Won't be going back, due to the hassling I got, and my partner and I got rather annoyed by it. But it's definitely worth a try for the weather and cost.

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks AI in June 2012 in a family room. First time to Tunisia so didn't really know what to expect and with the mixed reviews about the hotel on Tripadvisor prior to us travelling, I was pretty apprehensive about it all but wanted to give it a go. Have booked again for Sept this year! We were very pleasantly surprised. We found the staff at the hotel and outside very friendly and approachable. Other guests had warned us about the constant hassle from traders outside the hotel and especially in Sousse, have to say we didn't find this to be the case at all. Had some great banter with the people but wouldn't call it hassle by any means. The hotel is in a really good position just a few minutes walk to the marina. Yes the resort is purpose built and touristy but it is pleasant enough and we felt completely safe walking about. The tourist train over to Sousse is an experience not to be missed, it's a bone shaker but great fun and lovely and cool.
We really liked the hotel, the restaurant needs updating but it is clean and pleasant enough. I liked the fact that we were allocated a table for two on the first night and that was our table for the whole of the holiday and could go into the restaurant at any time in the evening for our meal. No set sitting times! Food was very good. Really good choice for veggies and meat lovers. Desserts were beautiful. Couldn't fault the breakfasts either.
The pool bar was great it was lovely to sit there in the evening and have a few drinks before our evening meal. The staff at the pool bar and restaurant were great, couldn't do enough for you.
Never had a problem finding a sun bed, you just had to pick your spot and the pool boys/life guards brought the beds to you.
Very pleased with the room. It was classed as a family room with self catering facilities. These rooms are in separate blocks from the main hotel looking out towards the pool (or at least ours was). Very roomy, small kitchen area, through to bedroom area then through to sitting and eating area and balcony. Didn't get to see the hotel rooms but I would guess that the family rooms have to be bigger.
All in all a great relaxing holiday and based on our experience would definitely recommend the Kanta.

We spent a week at hotel Kanta which had wonderful and helpful staff throughout. The excursions were available at a plenty with a helpful in house trip leader. The hotel is close to the popular marina area and is close to local airports. My only issues were that the private beach was quite a walk away and not very clean. I didn't spend any time on the beach because the conditions weren't brilliant. Also, beyond the marina there wasn't much to do locally and the resort looked a bit tired come October time. But for what we paid for, this was a good choice.
