“2nd Stay @ Kanta... 22-28th August '13”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

After our first trip to the Kanta Resort in May 2012 we didnt hesitate to return for a last minute holiday.
sadly I have to say nothing like our first...
Hotel staff are lovely kind helpful people make you very welcome and the house keeping & bar staff are excellent, the hotel a little dated but clean and comfortable. The grounds are well kept, and pools spotless! A great location close to the Marina lovely for a nice walk, shop owners do try and badger you to buy but a firm no sends them away.
A wonderful place to relax either by pool or private beach but this is not a holiday for nightlife etc.
My dislikes this visit are as follows...
Restaurant was so very dis organised and food standards slipped quite considerably, staff seemed lost of how to get it under control. Entertainment was dire!
Locals or as i was told Libyans were a big problem, they ignored staff and basically did what the hell they liked and didnt take any notice to the hotel rules and regulations, wasted food filling plates and plates of food and deserts and just left it. Swimming pool regulations were ignored that wearing swimming burka's were not allowed, they just laughed and ignored the life guards who asked them to leave the pools. They basically ran riot around the hotel and the hotel staff did nothing about them.
This has seriously changed my mind about a future visit to Kanta which is a shame as ive recommended to friends & family to this hotel after my first visit.
Avoid last week of August in Tunisia as its main holiday season and it ciaos.

I shall miss Ahmed & piano bar staff as they are wonderful people and a great asset to the hotel. Met some great people this year, keep in touch if you read this, im the heavily tattooed lady lol.

I holidayed here last year, my first time alone abroad other than visiting family in Spain. I admit I was very apprehensive but was assured by Co-op Travel that it was a lovely, safe resort. They were right which is why I returned this year with my partner.
The hotel is very clean with comfortable bedrooms and very friendly and helpful staff. I disagree with the comments that you have to tip everyone in order to get good service as I found that most of the staff didn't expect it and if we didn't tip we still got great service. Yes there are some members of staff who want to be tipped but remember that these people are on a very low wage (approx equivalent of £300 a month) and work long hours 6 days a week. A lot of the younger ones work through the high season months so they can afford to go to better schools during the quiet months.
The meals were lovely with plenty of choice which included freshly cooked meat or fish which sometimes you had to queue for but we found if you ate around 8 then most guests had eaten therefore the dining room was empty. A couple of times we ate just before the restaurant was due to close and there was still plenty of hot food to choose from and the meat and fish freshly cooked still plentiful. The only thing they seemed to run out of was bread which was no great deal.
We will definitely return here.
Avoid last 2 weeks in August as this is Tunisia's main holiday fortnight and some of the Tunisian guests can be rude and arrogant, but then again so can some of the British!

Stayed here from the 14th-24th August, having had time to reflect im still of the same opinion. Now surely we cannot all be be wrong? Did we imagine it all? No of course not. Now i consider myself to be well travelled and i have never experienced anything like it. Kept waiting for hours in reception for our room, rude staff, useless rep(who was sacked), same wall to wall slop each and everyday. Not enough sunbeds to go round, but your ok if you bribe(sorry i mean tip) the life guards on a daily basis. Fighing at the poolside with the locals. Local women dragged from the pool fully clothed screaming like a banshe. Overgrown gardens(Jungle) which need thinning out to let some sun in! I understand it was there first year of all Inclusive and im afraid it showed, the hotel although traditional, is dated and in dire need of a serious make over. Im sure it was just fabulous in 1979 when it was built. Cannot fault the cleanliness of the rooms but the beds were as hard a rock. The manager, once made aware of all the problems turned things around to a certain extent but for most (many unhappy brits), the damage was already done. Piano bar is the best place to drink, Seen moonface and silky in there with his baby camels, along with Redback Gorilla and Sausage skin such lovely people. Wholesale changes are needed here if this hotel is live up to all the hype that some people have chosen to give it. Im sorry, my standards are far higher than this hotel delivers, not a 4* by a long way. You must tip for everything or else you become invisible very quickly.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view you will need to be at the rear of the hotel on the 4th or 5th floor. You nee...

Just returned with my Wife & two children aged 10 & 6 from an all inclusive week long stay at the Hotel Kanta. The positive points were that it was a well maintained complex set in pleasant grounds, a selection of good food, hard working and friendly entertainment staff and our family bedroom was clean and spacious. So far, so good then.....However, there was something missing about the whole Holiday experience that has compelled me to post this. The Hotel had a mixture of all inclusive, half board and board only guests which although o.k. in principle, you got the distinct impression that there was a certain amount of resentment from some of the staff towards the all inclusive guests. You have to remember that this is a tip oriented culture and the simple fact is when there is no cash changing hands, inevitably constant tipping will not follow!. After speaking to quite a few other Holidaymakers, the general feeling was that the Hotel was attempting to move with the times but did not necessarily like this type of pre-paid concept. Furthermore, All inclusive guests were not allowed to eat lunch at the poolside bar until after 2.00pm after the majority of the 'Paying punters' had been fed. Compared to the 'pay as you go' guests, we were served different and inferior drinks with the alcoholic offerings considerably watered down and cheap soft drinks decanted into premium name bottles kept in the fridge. All in all we generally were made to feel uncomfortable by a certain element of its employees which spoiled a potentially good holiday destination.

Also worth mentioning, if you also like your Sunbathing, the main pool area is heavily surrounded by large palm trees and static straw parasols resulting in a significant area mostly under shadow during the day.

I do not want to sound petty and inflexible but after two fantastic (and like most of us) hard earned previous all inclusive annual family breaks in Turkey for around the same money, I feel a bit short changed after our stay at the Kanta. The whole idea of taking these type of breaks is that the entire family can have some quality time together and you come away feeling that you have had genuine value for money. Realistically this Hotel needs to establish in which direction it wants to go. It is now very competitive holiday marketplace in the all inclusive category and unfortunately for us, this Hotel fell short of our expectations

the hotel was really nice a bit dated but nice the staff in the piano bar were really nice the room we had was very nice and balcony a great extra over looking the pool area food was good lots of choice you wouldn't go hungry tea was really weak so take your own t bags ..(we did ) coffee was nice but beware fruit juice is that powdered stuff not good you can get a complimentary tuk tuk from the hotel to the private beach with its own café/bar its well worth eating there fairly cheap ....sousse the medina trip is worth a go good fun but the jeep trip to the mountains not worth going your in a jeep for two hours drive up a mountain look at a pile of rocks and drive back ......oh what joy..

the harbour is a must great at night but be warned as you head for it look out for the little boy selling flowers for one dinar ....don't buy...the Irish bar was ok for a drink but order a pint of Guinness and you wont get it (Irish my foot)

if you want to get a place by the pool get down early they say not to put towels down but you have to so take no notice

the bar area by the pool was nice but if you are all inclusive your fine they fall over you but like us half board you can sit there till the cows come home

overall its a great place to stay and lots to do

Room Tip: defiantly overlooking the pool not the front to much noise till 4/5 in the morning

We arrived at about 4.00am in the morning and were very quickly given our room key and escorted their by a very friendly porter. We were just handed the visa paper work and asked to hand in the next day which was a great relief. The room was clean, spacious and air conditioned with everything that you need including a complimentary fruit bowl. We were on a half board basis so were not given a key to the fridge which was not a problem as we had arrived with plenty of water. We had a room on the fourth floor along at the end which meant it was lovely and quiet with no disturbance from other guests.

The hotel has two pool areas which we were able to enjoy on more than one occasion with enough sun beds to go round most days. On the day when we couldn't get a bed we just used the complimentary tuktuk down to the beach, it runs between 9.00 and 5.00 daily and was able to enjoy the beautiful panoramic view. You may get hassle from vendors selling on the beach but a firm no and they will move on.

Breakfast was very busy but we were always able to find somewhere to sit. For dinner you are allocated a table on arrival and this is your table for your evening meal for the duration of your stay. We were not allocated a proper table until day 3, this may have been due to the large volume of guests but no big deal as we were still able to have dinner. Once allocated your table remember to tip the waiter and they will look out for you for the rest of your stay. Cleanliness in the servery of the dining room was fine but the actual dining room was in need of a good clean. The floor was swept after each meal time but was in desperate need of a mop and bucket.

Cleanliness throughout the rest of the hotel was better but there was room for improvement, this may be me being critical as I work in the hotel industry and would probably notice things before other guests. My travel companion did not pick up on the cleanliness until I pointed it out and she then agreed with me. It may get better soon as we arrived at the end of the summer season and they had been exceptionally busy.

The hotel is located a short walk from the Port and we took many a leisurely stroll along. The shops sell much the same and be prepared to haggle, I found if you offered about a third of he asking price you weren't far away. If you offer to low they will not sell to you and they will let you walk away. You then know to increase the price slightly at the next shop you go in to. We found a lovely wee shop, next to the supermarket which made hand made bags to order where you could choose your style and colour for 50dinar (£20), good value for a one off piece which can be made in 24 hours.

The boat trips are great value and worth doing, we have enjoyed these on two previous visits to Tunisia but unfortunately were not able to enjoy this year due to illness (deli belly), was this due to cleanliness of hotel or a virus? Who knows!

We managed one trip to Sousse to the Medina, 7 dinar in a taxi, this is not for the faint hearted! If you do not like haggling their is the Soula centre on the edge of the Medina which has fixed prices (no haggling) otherwise enter the Medina and barter away. You will be harassed to enter every shop but a firm no and continue on your way. If you enter from the Soula centre side you will be heading into the Medina going uphill, it is a maze of tiny streets and alleys and you can easily become disorientated but to exit just remember to head downhill and you will be fine.

As this was a beach/pool holiday and due to illness, shortness of time, we did not go on any trips so cannot recommend.

On day of departure we did not leave until very late at night and we were able to have dinner that evening and we were given a room to shower and change after a day at the pool. The staff at the hotel went out of their way to help with anything you may need and are a great credit to the hotel.

The Tunisian people are extremely nice and speak many languages, just remember to tip for everything.

Would we go back to this hotel? Probably not only due to location of beach being slightly further away from hotel than we would have liked and also the cleanliness of the dining room.

Room Tip: We opted for 4th floor or above with sea view but sea view was very limited as large buildings were...
