“Pleasant surprise but take your own kettle !”
Reviewed November 9, 2011

Hotel is in a good location on the edge of Port El Kantaoui, approx 30 mins walk or 5 minutes in the frequent taxis. Nice hotel, could do with a spruce up with a few cracks here and there. But lets be honest, this is a hotel in Tunisia so obviously it is not quite the same as a 5* accomodation in Europe for example.

Rooms good size with a balcony, request a pool view or risk looking out at the dusty main road instead ! No tea/coffee making facilities in room, nor iron. Ironing service available at reception at a cost. Beds huge, bigger than a Queen size and longer than my 6'4" body needs ! Plenty of storage space, TV in room with only 2 English channels - BBC World News and 24 hour new i.e. less than 5 years old movies. Fridge and safe although our safe needed a new battery and bit of repair. Took 4 hours to sort out as the manager was "in a meeting" but when he was available, the repair man got on it right away.

Waiters very good especially "Mohamed" who even took time to arrange a pretty flower petal displayon our table when he knew we were leaving the next day. Genuinely friendly and multi lingual. The hotel has guests from Germany, France, Italy, UK and Russia, although apparently Russian guests do not visit this time of year.

Food is buffet style, plenty of choice 3 times per day. There are 3 places to eat inside, going all inclusive is recommended as meals at lunch time are expensive at 25 dinars per person. Beer costs 4.5 dinars which is dearer than most restaurants. Food at breakfast is fruit, continental and local cuisine. You can request fried eggs but for anyone looking for bacon & sausage, you will not get that. There are small mini sausages and plenty of tea/coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice is available as you wait for a small cost. Evening food varies daily, expect to see plenty of lamb and beef. Please remember it is a Muslim country so you will not be seeing loads of pork produce, although one evening there was a special treat of slow roast pork. Deserts are AMAZING with great pastries, ice cream, cakes, fruit etc. You will not go hungry.

The local Celtia beer is very tasty, quite like a continental pils. Various wines and soft drinks available with cocktails available in the piano lounge and bar.

Holiday rep "Michael" hard to track down, he was there the morning after we arrived but did not turn up later that day when scheduled to take our bookings for trips. I contacted the central office and had to pay the coach driver the days we took the excursions. The full day Roman Empire trip and the half day visit to El Djem highly recommended, although the full day trip took a wierd diversion on the way back to pass through Tunis even though that was 90km to the north of Douga !

Bar staff and reception staff mostly good although 1 isolated instance of bar waiter being rude to my fiancee while I was in the toilet hassling her for payment of our 2 drink bar tab. Even his colleague told him I was going to return soon, sadly it seems he was of an older generation that does not respect ladies. This was a one off. Be advised a tip of 1-2 dinar is quite sufficient for most things. The average monthly wage is 400 dinars as quoted by tour guides so a tip of any notes ( 10 dinars + ) is very generous and should be reserved for exceptional service or at the last meal to your appointed waiter. You get the same waiter all week as long as you don't move location of your table.

Beware hawkers who claim " Hi remember me ? I am the waiter from your hotel " then try to lure you into dubious dealings. This is most noticable around the Medina (Old Town) in Sousse, if ignored or told no they typically stop bothering you. Beware of 2 men operating around the marina of Port El Kanyaoui offering "pirate boat trips for a deposit, pay the rest tomorrow". They have NO CONNECTION with the boat operators, it is a scam. Trips from the Marina only operate in the summer season, else you can book a trip on a similar boat via your hotel.

Set your taxi fares before you go. From this hotel to the marina you should only pay 3 dinars, to Sousse is 6 and to Sousse Medina 8 dinars. Never ever accept the first price, same goes to any stall holders you chose to buy from. Prices in hotels & restaurants, supermarkets are fixed but make sure the shelf advertised price matches the price on the bottom of the box as some locations will try to over charge. Tunisia is a comparatively poor country so many traders see tourists as a good way to get more money. Cannot blame them, tourist levels are down over 50% this year, just be aware.

Pool oudoors is C-O-L-D until after 2 pm but is a good size. A morning dip will make you feel alive for sure, better to use the nice 32 centigrade heated indoor pool ! Just big enough to have a short back and forth swim. The gym and sauna cost extra unless you are all inclusive, pool towels cost 10 dinars each to hire for the duration of your stay but fully refunded on return when you leave.

Entertainment on the evenings poor, but we stayed in winter season. During the daytime there is free aqua aerobics, archery and crazy golf with numerous spa activities at a price (unless all inclusive).

Decor overall good, hope you like cats as there are 8-10 wandering the grounds around the pool. Look out for "Jasper" the very cute currently 4 month old ginger kitten, very friendly he will be on your lap as quick as you can blink ! Staff turn a blind eye to feeding the cats from the buffet food as long as the cats do not get into the hotel. Cats are everywhere in Tunisia, expect to see them at most outdoor restaurants looking for tit bits. Dogs are very rare, locals do not seem to keep cats as pets but tollerate them. No mice/rats/reptiles/snakes spotted anywhere in our 1 week stay.

Room Tip: As for a pool view, hundreds of rooms available. Suites are x2 bigger than normal rooms. Sound proof...

This hotel is dirty, needs massive refurb, staff are rude and treat women like dirt. Four days into my holiday i was sexually by a libyan guest in the hotel and then told by management that no police would be called, and should i not stay quiet i may not make it home!

Room Tip: simply go to another hotel!

I have returned from 2 weeks hols at thishotel and would not return, They cater for the Germans Russians and Polish, on the 2nd day they ran out of Brandy, Martinez, Red and White and then white wine, they said tomorrow, but tomorrow never came, Ice cream is only served on a thursday, i was told it was seasonel, You have to pay 2 dinas for fresh orange juice, and you have to pay 2 dinas for a mattress for the sunbed, on the 2nd day i went to the beach and within 1 hour my sandals had been taken, also another couple had theirs taken later that week, They cater for the German, and polish, not many english there and the entertainment is all foreign, We were told to drink vodka, so went to buy brandy and it cost us 36 dinas a bottle, The staff are very slow at the bar when serving and it was a free for all in the dining room, also if you dont get to the beach by 7 clock you have no chance of a sunlounger the germans have got their towels on all of them.

I, like others, was a bit concerned after reading reviews before I arrived. Let me put you at ease...the hotel was immaculately clean and tidy, towels changed EVERY DAY, bedding changed three times in the week, all staff were happy, polite and friendly. The facilities were brilliant, drinks, pools, shops etc. and the beautiful beach is literaly steps from the hotel grounds. There are great watersports available on the beach (usual stuff, paracending, skiing, banana boat etc). Port El Kantoui is well worth a visit and is about a twenty minute slow stroll away. The only negative was the food, pretty greasy as Olive Oil is compulsory! Dont let that put you off tho as the choice is superb and you can always find something "English-ish" to eat, oh and the desserts are simply gorgeous! Overall this was a fantastic place to go and I would highly reccomend it to everyone.

firsty i would like to say i dont understand people who moan about every thing in a hotel especially when they are in what is basically a third world country.I have absolutely no complaints about this hotel or the staff. This was my first ever holiday abroad and i absolutely loved it even though the reviews did have me worrying, but suffice to say the hotel was nothing like what the reviews said so im going to give you my honest opinion and review of the place........................................
After arriving around 11am we had to wait for our room which is expected wherever you go check in was around 2 so we just headed in the bar and relaxed, bar staff lovely, they DIDNOT pressure you for tips and we got what we asked for on every occasion, there isnt a great deal of choice but the main ones were there, and boy do they make the drinks strong. You can get coffee virtually all day there too.
Got our room about 1pm and it was really nice facing the side of the hotel overlooking a beautiful garden,we had a balcony and a huge double bed, bathroom lovely and clean.........yeah sure a few stains on the carpets but it was all clean.....
Restaurant experience was excellent we manged to get salem as a waiter and he was fantastic and a bit of a star on the reviews on here he looked after us well .throughout the week we tipped him approx 10 dinars and he had drinks ready for us every meal fruit etc aand dressed our table beautifully, there was something different on the menu every day and plenty of it(so no need to pile the plates high and just waste it!!!!!!! like some ignorant people were doing! theres food all day so you wont starve)
Entertainment in the evening was so bad it was funny but they tryed so hard its a shame they cant have some help with that but kids love it ,theres a disco in an adjoing hotel thats free to get in you have to buy drinks which is fair enough, cant comment though cos i never went there.
Sousse is about a 15 min taxi ride (dont pay more than 8 dinars) this is such an eyeopener with the locals expect to be hassled but a firm no is sufficient to stop them at least for a while!!Medina was fun although a bit scary again be firm and have the price you wanna lay firmly in your head they will soon come after you for a sale.Be aware of locals saying they work in your hotel......they dont.Lovely spice shop in there and so cheap and material is a great buy, most of the stuff is fake branded stuff but if your brave you can find some good deals...............made me laugh as all they seem to know about britain is ASDA cheaper than chips,we give you good deal and they think we are all cockneys!!!
We walked into port el kantoui some great fixed price shops and lovely restaurants and the evening fountain and light show is great.Again you will have banter but smile and just say no.
We did the 2 day sahara trip which for me was the highlight its 85pounds each but so worth it(plus an extra 25 for a camel ride and horse carriage ride)early starts but travelled over 1000 km in too days using the coach, and 4x4 jeeps.tour guide was amazing and knew his stuff, camel ride was fantastic were able to wear all the robes and really look the part,it was so hot! nearly 50 degrees.we saw the atlas mountains, climbed up them to see different features, water falls,el jem coliseum, salt lakes and the sunrise at 4 am!!!!!The hotel in the sahara was amazing but was so tired didnt explore much...
Other trip we did was the african theme night with a trip to the zoo was amazing plenty of food wine and great company fantastic eveningthat was i think 40 pounds .
Had an amazing 7 days and fun filled, pools were great always plenty of free sunbeds and the sea water amazing so hot, have a go in a pedalo thats free too and you can go out for miles, water really clean and didnt see any seaweed or jellyfish.Make friends with some of the locals and they ll be a real help.El mouradi is a great hotel so dont listen to the bad reviews!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: rooms over looking pool could be quite noisy at times

Just got back from 1 week at this supposed 4* hotel, what a joke. Room and hotel so tired and old looking, very outdated. Pool area again old and crumbly, pay for your sun bed matress, both the pool toilets and the beach are filthy, locals constantly trying to sell you their tat!! Food , dreadful, if you like cold chips your ok, the same old food day after day, it's a bun fight every night with the germans , russians or the poles bashing you out of the way. The staff are rude and if they are nice it's for a tip!!! Whilst there the hotel was being inspected by the tourist board to assess their 4* status, the staff went beserk 4 rooms specifically decorated for this occassion, new carpets and furnishings, nothing like the grubby rooms the rest of us stayed in, the toilets next to the restaurant which hardly ever had loo paper or soap miraculously blocked off until after the inspection completed, amazingly they retained their 4* status even the bar staff were laughing at this!!!
If you got this holiday cheap, then you get what you pay for. However, I booked with "Sunsave" an operator on "Icelolly.com" supposed to offer excellent holidays at competative prices, think not!!!!! I paid over £1,260 for 1 weeks A/I for myself and my partner, found out most other guests had paid that for 2 weeks!!! Sunsave, do not offer competative prices nor do they provide customer service, DO NOT BOOK THROUGH SUNSAVE AND DO NOT GO TO THIS DUMP!!!
