El Mouradi Palace
Ranked #17 of 33 Hotels in Port El Kantaoui
Reviewed July 27, 2011

After staying at El Mouradi Palace 9 times over the last 3 years I will definately be going back again and again. El Mouradi Palace may not be the most up to date or modern hotel in the area, but its certainly got plenty of charm and character and the staff are lovely genuine people. With regards to previous rude and unhelpful comments made by other visitors-I would like to make a few comments of my own.

1.) A refurbishment had been planned and a couple of rooms on the 1st floor of the hotel were started, but however due to the Yasmine revolution on the 14th January 2011, this work has been postponed.

2.) Staff at the hotel may seem a little unhappy,( but they are not rude )but this is purely down to the fact that there jobs are not secure and they are worried about money/families. After the Revolution Tourists have not returned back to Tunisia in their previous high numbers and alot of staff are been laid off without pay and do not know when they will be asked to return.

3.) The hotel can normally hold 1000 visitors, at the moment there is less than half that number staying, because people are worried about anymore protests. (EVERYTHING IS SETTLED ACORDING TO FCO WEBSITE) So it would be the best time to take advantage of everything the hotel and area has to offer. The beaches, Marina, shops, restaurants are also not jam packed either.

:)

Lets get one thing clear first. This not a 5 star hotel. Its not a 4 star hotel. It barely scrapes into 3 star territory.

I was truly disappointed by the whole experience. Out of fairness, I will state the facts and let you decide if this is a 5 star hotel:

1. You have to pay £5/hour to use the gym.

2. All inclusive guests get one type of bottled water, and half-board pay to get a different type of bottled water.

3. Room service actually delivered 1 out of every 2 requests made.

4. No kettles were allowed so making hot water for the baby milk was totally dependent on room service bringing up a jug of luke warm water (see above).

5. The whole hotel floor was covered in an aged red carpet with a musty smell. There was a definite smell of urine coming from the carpet in our corridor. A lot of the furniture in the room was tatty to say the least. Light fittings were rusty. Anything covered in copper which was a lot, was blotchy and probably unpolished in the last 10 years.

6. The food was ok to good. Some of the dishes at dinner time were really tasty. But you have to buy water and drinks.

7. 75% of the staff were frankly unhappy. The impression I got was that understaffing contributed to this. There was a 'can't do attitude' about the place. 'non', 'non' etc.. Not acceptable for a place calling itself a 5 star hotel.

8. All TV programs in the room were either german, arabic or french speaking.

Room Tip: don't go

Room Tip: we had sea view and it was massive only for 35 pounds extra for the week (recommended)

I dont no what people are moaning about. The hotel was lovely. The staff were all happy and couldnt do enough for you. They worked so hard. We tipped them at the end of our stay but it did not add up to much between 4 of us. The food was very nice, diffrent meat at each meal. The salads were always fresh. Room service every day and the bedding changed. Our room was overlooking the pool it was spacious and clean with a large balcony. We were all inclusive and it was worth every penny. Port el kantoui is a short walk, 10 mins tops or you can get a taxi or horse an carriage, both are cheap. I would highly recomend this hotel. Please dont listen to the bad reviews !!!!

Please take notice of this review before you make a huge mistake prior to booking this hotel. I wish we had took notice of some of the bad reviews before we went but decided to give the hotel the benfit of the doubt. Absolutely deplorable is the only way to describe it, hotel is absolutely filthy, carpets are worn and frayed, our room had mould around bath, cracked and broken tiles in both toilet and bathroom, and my supposed balcony was a roof top where they banged and brushed carpets and rugs, service is terrible if your all inclusive as staff see your armband and ignore you preferring to serve half board guests in the hope of tips, as for their cocktails yuk, only a choice of 6 and they are made with sweet cheap cordials, fresh orange juice has to be paid for. The food is the worst i heve ever experienced, always cold, no choice, only stayed there 2 days and could not stand to stay there another minute so demanded to be moved as we had the same food repeatedly both days, very very basic and always cold, carrots and cauliflower (which i do like) but not for breakfast, no air conditioning which we were assured there would be by Thomas Cook Rep before departure, but according to the rep in Tunisia air con is not supplied until the middle of July. There were no snacks either inbetween meals as advertised. All family ended up with sickness and diarrhoea and that was the final straw, we were moved to another hotel in Hammamet where we did not want to be and wish we had saved our money and stayed in Gateshead , will never return not even for a free fortnight, please please dont waste your money, on my return home I have even wrote to Thomas Cook with a formal complaint and they havnt even had decency to reply, they should be ashamed to have dealings with this hotel and take peoples hard earned money, DONT GO, BE WARNED.

I am not sure why I booked to go here again, 2 weeks here this time and I was bored out of my mind. Repetitive food, repetitive music, repetitive entertainment. Extremely rude hotel manager, TV only picked up Tunisian channels, air conditioning, lights and TV all turned themselves on and off on their own…..

Beer so week and tasteless as is the wine, same old food sloped out morning, noon and night. I do not know how this can be a 5 star hotel by any countries standards.

Poor doorman sweating profusely because of the ridiculous uniform he had to wear in 95+ degree heat, it was downright cruel. Staff work their butt’s off while the rude ignorant manager keeps himself well hidden.

I asked for some documentation with the Mouradi website so I could complain, the links don’t work, surprise surprise….

Having done quite a lot of research before we went,we were a little nervous about what to expect from the hotel/area ( eg mixed reviews).
However,it was very good indeed.
Transfer from Monastir Airport only 35 minutes, slow walk to Port El Kantaoui itself with bars/restaurants etc (out of main reception, turn left, walk until a roundabout with huge golf ball reached, turn left again until Port reached).Main road at the front, with other shops for water etc) plus bars and cafes.

A restaurant visited a few times was La Dourade in the Port-very enjoyable and good value for money.
We ate at L'Olivier (a Trip Advisor favourite)-that was good too.
Tunisian wines-a marvellous surprise (and not marked up too much in restaurants either).
Wines/spirits mainly in restaurants/hotels whilst cafes/bars serve Celtia (a lager type beer)-many are alcohol free in keeping with Muslim religion.
Our room was quiet (2nd floor) and was well serviced every day-in fact little things like the towels/mats being artistically turne into swans, hearts etc was a nice little touch).
We were on a bed and breakfast board basis (served from 6.30-11.00) and there was plenty to choose from, whatever time we arrived.
The board basis determined what else we needed to pay for (many guests were on all inclusive). This included use of the fitness centre (daily for an hour for me).I wasn't expecting to pay to use this, but considering the price of the package we paid,it wasn't too bad.
The pool area was lovely, well managed (plenty of activities provided,if you wanted them) and there is a private beach section also.
Pool music from 10.00 to 15.00 (approx).
The staff were very friendly and helpful-English (and other languages) spoken-most were bilingual French/Tunisian Arabic.
Constant maintenance/cleaning/watering.(Not a problem).

Room Tip: Depends what the person wants-see comments above.
