When we arrived we were shown to our room which was along a corridor with dirty carpets, plates of old food etc outside residents' doors. The room overlooked a bit of wasteland and was very tired looking. It wasn't overly clean either, we found hairs in the bathroom sink and dust on the floor etc. I went down to Reception and said we weren't happy at all and the man informed us to return the following day at noon to complain. The following day there was a very, very long queue of people at the desk so I was in for a long wait (good practice for the rest of the holiday to be honest) we were finally moved but the man at the desk said he was very stressed and there were many arrivals but we ended up with a room with a better view. The card for the door was a bit temperamental but we had decided that we were going to make the best of the holiday and we were going to overlook certain things.
There were too many people for the hotel facilities as we were there at British half term holiday in May) so we had to queue a long, long time for food, drinks, residents were getting up at 5 am and getting sun beds ( we ended up doing the same as we wanted our children to have the opportunity to sit under a sunshade at certain times) the restaurant frequently ran out of plates, cups, glasses etc and there was no hot water during early evening for a bath or shower. The latest time for hot water was about 5 pm ish. We had to ask for bedding 4 times before we got any, the patio door didn't open easily, the TV had poor reception, the fridge didn't work, the balcony screen was wobbly (I had to make sure my children didn't go out on the balcony unaccompanied) On the last day we paid for the room for a longer period as we had a late flight and ended up using one hand towel for all of us as despite asking 5 times we never got any new bath towels ( no phone in the room so going down to Reception every time and queuing was starting to get annoying) there were lots of irritating bits of red tape as well. After we had been moved to a (slightly) better room on the first day we just wanted to relax by the pool but we needed to have cash for the pool towels as a deposit. They were 10 dinar each, so as we needed 4, therefore 40 dinar. They said they accepted English money too (the equivalent was £20) but they said they needed £40. We had £35 and we told reception we would go to the airport on foot that evening ( a good half hour walk each way) to pay the extra £5 as it was boiling etc. they wouldn't't accept it. I actually felt like I was going to cry with frustration at this point and the Thompson holiday rep lent us 5 euros. Bless him! It still involved a long discussion with the towel man before he would accept 2 different types of currency. The towel man was another irritation, to be honest his slowness would have been quaint under normal circumstances but taking 20/ 30 minutes to write down all our details and give us our towels was just annoying again! There were lots of other things but I hope people get the picture, certainly not a 4 star. The food was lovely, a little bit Samey but I can cope with that. The breakfasts weren't great but the rest was good. Patience was required as there was a lot of waiting for food as the queues were always long etc. there was a Tunisian night which was fab and there was a Tunisian lady sitting down making flatbreads and cooking them in front of us on a fire, very Bedouin looking and our children loved that!
