“Our family holiday”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

When we arrived we were shown to our room which was along a corridor with dirty carpets, plates of old food etc outside residents' doors. The room overlooked a bit of wasteland and was very tired looking. It wasn't overly clean either, we found hairs in the bathroom sink and dust on the floor etc. I went down to Reception and said we weren't happy at all and the man informed us to return the following day at noon to complain. The following day there was a very, very long queue of people at the desk so I was in for a long wait (good practice for the rest of the holiday to be honest) we were finally moved but the man at the desk said he was very stressed and there were many arrivals but we ended up with a room with a better view. The card for the door was a bit temperamental but we had decided that we were going to make the best of the holiday and we were going to overlook certain things.
There were too many people for the hotel facilities as we were there at British half term holiday in May) so we had to queue a long, long time for food, drinks, residents were getting up at 5 am and getting sun beds ( we ended up doing the same as we wanted our children to have the opportunity to sit under a sunshade at certain times) the restaurant frequently ran out of plates, cups, glasses etc and there was no hot water during early evening for a bath or shower. The latest time for hot water was about 5 pm ish. We had to ask for bedding 4 times before we got any, the patio door didn't open easily, the TV had poor reception, the fridge didn't work, the balcony screen was wobbly (I had to make sure my children didn't go out on the balcony unaccompanied) On the last day we paid for the room for a longer period as we had a late flight and ended up using one hand towel for all of us as despite asking 5 times we never got any new bath towels ( no phone in the room so going down to Reception every time and queuing was starting to get annoying) there were lots of irritating bits of red tape as well. After we had been moved to a (slightly) better room on the first day we just wanted to relax by the pool but we needed to have cash for the pool towels as a deposit. They were 10 dinar each, so as we needed 4, therefore 40 dinar. They said they accepted English money too (the equivalent was £20) but they said they needed £40. We had £35 and we told reception we would go to the airport on foot that evening ( a good half hour walk each way) to pay the extra £5 as it was boiling etc. they wouldn't't accept it. I actually felt like I was going to cry with frustration at this point and the Thompson holiday rep lent us 5 euros. Bless him! It still involved a long discussion with the towel man before he would accept 2 different types of currency. The towel man was another irritation, to be honest his slowness would have been quaint under normal circumstances but taking 20/ 30 minutes to write down all our details and give us our towels was just annoying again! There were lots of other things but I hope people get the picture, certainly not a 4 star. The food was lovely, a little bit Samey but I can cope with that. The breakfasts weren't great but the rest was good. Patience was required as there was a lot of waiting for food as the queues were always long etc. there was a Tunisian night which was fab and there was a Tunisian lady sitting down making flatbreads and cooking them in front of us on a fire, very Bedouin looking and our children loved that!

Room Tip: I wouldn't stay here to be honest. I don't moan normally but getting irritated in the heat i...

The animation team at this hotel are the best. Sonia the manager. Yassiem. Scooby. They do the kids club and do an amazing job. They are kind, loving and exceptional with the kids. Nothing is too much trouble for them. They are the best thing about this hotel and I thank them all so much for being so amazing with our 2 children xxxx

We cannot wait to go back hopefully in September... Hotel is fantastic if you want to laze about in the sunshine with cocktail in hand. Food is spot on something for everyone never went hungry! Beach is beautfiul and very well kept by the man with the horse in the evenings! - I would like to say just how amazing the animation team are especially Meemo & Hicham they make you feel soooo welcome and keep you on your toes with the daily events such as water aerobics, darts, archery, zumba etc... The evenings the shows are spot on and again they'll have you up on your feet. I really do not know what people are complaining about? It is a brilliant value for money they make you feel very welcome and the place is clean and perfect for a relaxing week away from the hussle and bussle of London life!!

Having arrived at 11.00am we were told we could not check in until 2.00pm leaving us to have to wait around.

Once in our room we were on the side where aircrafts take off outside your balcony. The view was very un-inspiring. On a very busy road. With coaches coming and going to the hotel at all hours.

The sunbeds were the biggest disappointment. If you are happy to get up at 7.00am you are okay but if like us you go on holiday for a rest you are going to be disappointed as you will be left with the sunbed dregs on the ant infested grass area, away from the pool.

The food is fantastic and would highly recommend the Italian reastaurant where the waiter service is great.

The food in the main restaurant is great but the tables are slow to be cleared, and we often had to get our own knives and forks especially at breakfast.

The highlight of our holiday was the kids club, who were fantastic with the children offering a varied selection of entertainment to keep our daughter happy. A special mention to Scooby who was an excellent all round entertainer.

The shows that the entertainment team put on at night are great but I felt that they are all too over worked. Sometimes working until the early hours then up again to start the next shift.

Our favourite show was the Irish evening with the entertainment team putting on a fantastic display. The bingo was painful!!!

Dont buy from the shop it is grossly overpriced, and the shopkeeper mithers you constantly everytime you go in, to go on the trips that he arranges.

Disappointed with the star rating, not what I expected from a four star. Rather shabby with naff air conditioning. Mosquitos are also a problem so take plenty of repellants.

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view or pool view.

I went to the rosa beach in may as a couple with a toddler for one week. We pretty much enjoyed our break but we wouldn't return to tunisia or the rosa beach.
I found Tunisia in general to be too dirty, the drive from the airport and the drive we took to el jem (worth a visit by the way, 90 dinar £35 ish in a taxi and he waited 2 hours plus an hour each way drive) was pretty grim. Its like a rubbish tip everywhere!
The hotel is nice enough but there just isn't enough space for everyone and nothing to do when the weather turns. If your travelling with a toddler go somewhere else because this hotel just has nothing for them. 3 swings and none are a toddler seat swing (thats all they have) and theres no childs buffet so my son ate chips bread and fruit all week.
The sunbed thing is true, you do have to be up early, we went on the grass with another family and the men went down every morning at 6.30 to get our beds. Some mornings they would have to stay on them till 7am but not every morning, the security men removed towels off beds before 7 only one morning that we saw. Im not joking I saw people in hoodies on sunbeds at 5.30 one morning. Pretty ridiculous but seen as there's nothing else to do but sunbathe understandable.
The staff, this was my biggest issue I think. Wafa the concierge is indeed excellent as were the animation team to my son, taught him 'high 5' and always smiling even though they work 9am - 2am 6 days a week! ! Mini disco is the cutest.
The other staff though were all looking after the people that tip most. We tipped a waiter at the beginning and fair enough he saved us a table for about 2 days but he soon forgot about us ha ha. We went into the restaurant one evening when it was packed pushing a toddler and there was no tables except one - the waiter wouldn't let us sit down there! This was being saved for someone else more important. This happens openly so please dont think this was an isolated case, the supervisors are just as bad so its not worth mentioning to anyone.
The cleaning staff work hard, I was unfortunate enough to be im the lift at the same time as a cleaner getting absolutely screamed at by her (one of many) supervisors which was very uncomfortable. We tipped our cleaner but still got no towel art (much to my disappointment lol) but the room was always cleaned well. I feel the need to mention the 'life guard' / pool boy, what a joke. it took me nearly the week to realise thats what he was cos he had no uniform, never sat in his chair and was constantly sitting chatting to girls!! Quite funny but not when your supposed to be watching the pool.
The shop was very expensive. Ice cream is not available all day, and its not at meal times every day. The alcohol was nice but you dont feel like youve had a drink which is odd. The best cocktails are in the lobby bar, if you ask for cocktails outside you get the wrong one or the same one all the time (nice though ;)
Beach was nice enough, only saw a seaweed problem one day and it was bad but the man works hard to clear it and on the day I mean it was just flowing in which theres nothing you can do about.
The food. It was good but not great. Breakfast is very European which I quite liked though, dont expect full English! The lunch & dinner was nice there was alwsys something you liked, sometimes it was a little cold but not often. I have to mention the only thing that concerned me, that was on the last day and the fresh grill man doing the chicken (usually excellent!) was very busy with a lot of people crowding his station. He gave chicken out to me and my boyfriend separately that just wasn't cooked and none of us ate it fortunately. Like I said no area for kids in the restaurant which I think is a big oversight. The a la carte restaurants are good but dont bother booking for 7 rather than half past cos youll just wait anyway and the Tunisian is annoyingly slow BUT served the best food in lovely surroundings. The head waiter in the Italian was a pompous man who berated me for daring to return my fish (calamari - can't eat it sorry! plus I was told it would be tuna!). I must say though they fixed my son a plate of chips nuggets and beans and everyone agreed he had the best meal in the place! :)
Go to monastir in a taxi if you need to get out - 15 dinar (about 3 quid) return and they wait! Beware the very intimidating shop keepers who will lie about prices to try and get you in the shops. If your used to places like that though itll be nothing new.
All in all we enjoyed our break but we wont return. Too many niggles and not enough to do.

This is the best holiday I have been on. We went for 2 weeks at the end of May and the weather was mid 30's to 40 degrees everyday. The cleanliness of the hotel was immaculate, floors and tables etc were always spotless. Food was excellent also with a different theme on every night, the waiters were always on hand to take away plates and top up drinks straight away. Nobody asks for a tip at all but it's always nice to give them a small donation. The animation team were the best I've ever witnessed, the most friendlies of people that were there to make your holiday as best as possible. Anybody that says their creepy or weird and liars. The boy that does the kids club is amazing with kids, he's only 17 and is so good and comfortable around them. This is a wonderful hotel that I would visit again in a heartbeat.

Only thing I would say is......get up early for a sun bed

Traveled as a couple in May. We arrived at 2.a.m and there was 1 poor guy on reception to deal with our coach. After a lengthy check in we were shown to our room, had to pay to bag boy to leave. Room was very nice, we paid for a sea view & got a family sized room for just the 2 of us :)

The next day we heard stories that it had taken 4 hours for some of our coach to check in!

The food is very nice, different variations everyday & lots of meal times. The service is poor though. Couldn't get a knife & fork, drink etc. from the waiters & they wouldn't let us fetch our own. They seemed to be too busy running around after their favorite guests (must be the big tippers).
The A La Carte restaurants are all excellent, great food & service!

The hotel is not signed very well, although its not that big so you can find your way around quickly. The reception staff are useless. "Sorry, come back later" is their stock response to everything. They never have enough currency but you can change it in town if you go out.

The hotel concierge, Wafa, is wonderful. She is an example to the rest of the staff.

The cleaner was smoking in our room & it stunk. They never replaced the water & one day they even made 'towel art' with my underpants. Bit weird. We kept the do not disturbed tag on the door after that.

The pool is salt water & incredibly cold. The sunbeds are in short supply as most people have mentioned. Its incredibly difficult to catch the poolside waiters eye, I tipped for every drink but they didn't seem to like me :(
They give you beer in little tiny glasses, I even got a shot of beer one time. So I brought a big glass of my own & they didn't object to to filling it up for me :)

The entertainment was OK, it will be better in the warmer months if they can use the outside stage. There is lots of activities in the day if you like. They don't hassle you if you don't. The beach is OK, they only look after the bit that's right in front of the hotel. The sea is ankle deep for a good 50 meters.
If you go to the beach before the security guard is there prepare to be hassled by the locals to buy their tat. Don't let them put anything in your hand if you don't intend to buy it. They are very persistent and bartering soon turns to begging. They stay clear when the guard is about.
The taxi drivers out the front of the hotel are very pushy too, one of them squared up to me but stand your ground & they back off.

This all sounds like a horrible review but it was really just lots of little niggles that prevent it from being somewhere quite nice to just a humdrum experience. The staff are the real disappointment, some people seemed to get awesome service & others just got ignored.
Maybe I don't tip big enough. We won't be going back to find out.
