Royal Thalassa Monastir
Ranked #6 of 43 Hotels in Monastir
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 8, 2007

Went to Thalassa with my husband during the first week of October. From start to finish it was excellent.
We were allocated a room on the 3rd floor which had a double bed and excellent views of the pool and sea. Maids cleaned the room daily and did a good job.
We went full board, I won't go into detail as you can find that info in other reviews but the food was excellent, something for everyone. A lot of the lunch menu was similar to the evening meal but even if you had something different everyday you couldn't get through it all in 1 week.
Waiters worked hard, clearing plates away immediately and getting drinks to you quickly.
You're allowed a free meal in the a la carte restaurant once during your stay, to be honest the food in the main restaurant was better but you may as well if it's free.
Evening entertainment was good if you like watching shows etc. We probably would have got a bit bored staying for 2 weeks as even if you got taxis out on an evening there wasn't really any where to go and sample different nightlife. We met some really friendly people throughout our stay.
British people were in the minority, lots of Germans, Dutch & Russians, not that it made a difference.
Bar staff were great, really friendly and good to have a laugh.
We were drinking bottles of lager, Celita (I think) dead cheap, only worked out at around £1.30 a bottle, really nice.
We didn't go very prepared and so had only taken a bank card away with us, the nearest ATM is at the airport but this is literally across the road. Could hear planes taking off and landing but didn't bother us at all.
Weather was fantastic, and loads going on during the day time.
Went to Monastir and Souse in taxi, really busy and far too pushy so wasn't keen. Much worse than Turkey.
Port El Kantaoui was much better and the harbor very nice.
Overall, excellent holiday, hotel, weather, people, definitely go back.

This was our second time at the Thalassa and we were not disappointed. The only complaint we could make was that it was way too hot, reaching over 50 degrees some days. Food is great and there is plenty of choice. We all enjoyed having massages at the hotel spa even our 10 year old daughter. Choose this hotel if you want a peaceful holiday in a lovely hotel but not if you want great nightlife.

After having had three fab holidays in Tunisia staying at the Sol el Mouradi-Port el Kantaoui, The Sahara Beach-Skanes and The Miramar-Hammamet. We (my husband & two children, age 14 & 10 decided on the Thalassa Monastir and it was certainly the best hotel by far!
I have been fortunate to travel to many places but I am always drawn back to Tunisia and the Thalassa was a great choice.
Hope my tips help you have a super time in Tunisia
Flight-Short & sweet (fill in your visitors card on the plane, it saves time in the airport. Keep the bottom half safe whilst on holiday, you need it to leave the country).
Transfer-Swift (think we'll walk across next time!).
Hotel-Stunning (all areas immaculate).
Reception-Impressive(staff efficient & friendly, use them to ask for information, i.e. approx taxi charges).
Bars-Great (the piano bar has a good relaxing atmosphere, try the Negroni cocktail, mmmm!).
Theatre-Comfortable (good sized room with entertainment by the hard-working animation staff).
Staff-Friendly (from the maids, bar staff to the animation team all the staff are there to make your stay great. "Hello" Saida, Saffoinne & Ali, we miss you.
Restaurant-Clean (can be quite busy in the morning depending what time you go).
Waiters-Friendly & Efficient (if you choose to eat your evening meal at 6.30 the waiters will come out to greet you, which is a nice touch. The waiters have their own "patch" & we tended to sit in the same area each night, leave a small tip at the end of the meal & you will be looked after well).
Food-Superb (great choice,well presented & superbly cooked).
Rooms-Adequete (cleaned daily by friendly maids, we tip at the end of our stay to show our appreciation, they are grateful).
Pool-Good size(surrounded by plenty sunbeds & well kept gardens).
Beach-Lovely (private section by hotel, we did suffer from seaweed but this was cleaned away each morning).
Excursions-So much to see (we use taxis to visit Monastir, Sousse & Port el Kantaoui.Carthage & Sidi Bou Said are well worth a visit if staying in Hammamet. The Sahara Trip is a trip not to be missed you will visit El Djem, Matmata,Tozeur, Douz,Tamerza & Chebika we rode on camels & drove to the Atlas mountains by 4-4, a long journey but so worth it.
Shopping-An experience (haggling is great fun & it does get easier with practice!, there are fixed price shops if you don't fancy bartering).
Locals-Persistant (a smile & a "no-thank you" works, be firm but polite, treat them as you would like to be treated yourself).
Tunisia-A favourite (if like me Tunisia gets under your skin you will love the country, for me it's like going home!
Will be back soon x

once again we went to the Thalassa, was there in 2006,its a great hotel, friendly staff in all departments, animation team a bit pushy, but they are only doing there job....food was good, weather brill(except for an all mighty storm on the sunday before we came home, but it certainly cleared the air)room are clean tidy, and the maids very friendly, yes i spose you could say, well they will be expecting a tip....but i don,t think any of the staff do the things they do just so as they will get a good tip from you....this year i hired a car from reception, which was the best thing i ever did,in the past i have hired cars from travel agents...and boy do they know how to make cock ups,so it was a pleasure when the car turned up on time, the price was good and the whole thing was hassle free..we travelled to carthage,Sidi Bou Said, and stayed over night at the same hotel..pure french, food people and staff,so a great experience for us,i would recommend hiring a car its an ideal way of seeing some of the country YOU want to see,not the parts the holiday firms want to take you to see,so agin will be back 2008,!!!!!!!

this was our first time in tunisia, not quite sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. The hotel was spot on, the rooms were clean, and roomy, beds very comfortable.Food was very good, perhaps a little repetative, but still plenty of choice for all tastes, the waiters were very helpful, and pleasant, and were willing to try to speak english. The entertainment staff were very friendly, and full of fun, the children appeared to be well catered for also. Went shopping to the medena which was an experience, rather like shopping in Turkey, only slightly worse, but still good fun, we just pretended to be deaf.
All in all an excellent holiday, would really love to go back.

I have to totally disagree with any bad reviews about this hotel as i found it faultless. The hotel itself was stunning and it was extremely spacious. I would definately recommend it to anyone no matter what age or type it was great for relaxing or anything if you wanted to exercise or wanted some action there were tons of activities you could do such as water aerobics and tennis and volleyball and ping pong and mini games plus you could go scubadiving surfing and parasailing on the beach however there was no pushiness todo any of it. The entertainment was great also there was a little disco for children and a childrens play area and there were many shows on the nights such as cabaray, dancing, musclemen and even down to karaoke and beauty contests. I found staff extremely helpful and very friendly they made you feel very welcome and infact i missed them when i had to leave. They were always saying hello and asking if you were ok they also made the holiday special plus they love children and are very good with them. The food is something i always worry about when i travel on holidays and in this hotel i didnt have too because although the food wasnt crem de la crem it was still good and there was something for everyone and i mean that down to pizza and pasta and chips all the way to the local cuisine and staff would clear away the plates for you so you could go up again and again. The staff were lovely to me and my family and always kept a table for us and made us laugh. The hotel has a spa and tennis courts about 4 pools its own shop a disco room anything you want its got it. We went half board which was fine because if we did get hungry at lunchtime there was a barbeque near the pools. There were plenty of loungers around the pool which are free unless you want one on the private beach then you have to pay 1 dinar which is less then 40p also its 1 dinar for a cushion on the lounger but thats totally upto you if you want one you just have to grab the pool men and ask for one. The staff speak many languages so there is no need to worry about that and i think its just manners to be nice and tip them as they do work so hard and the animation team and the waitors are great. When we came off the plane you could feel the heat and it was great temperatures were very high and reached upto 58 degrees celcius at 5 o clock one day but the hotel is lovely and air conditioned for when you need to chill and it was the hottest time of year in fairness. You can only purchase money in Tunisia and its best to get it from the hotel as it is the cheapest the things there were very cheap and there was little you needed to buy. There are excursions you can go on which have a good variety of things to do form the sarhara desert to cabaray shows.
I really liked this hotel and cant wait to return and i will definately it was great the only bad points i can think of are if you go shopping in monastir be aware that the shop people can get very pushy and it can be stressing so only go if you are a fan of bartering also i found the airport a bit stressful as on the way back there were lots of queues and when we arrived men try and take your suitcases for you but they are just after tips so be aware and say no. See even if you notice my only bad points arent even about the hotel itself hehe i have just got back and i miss it i wish i was back there the worst part about the holiday was leaving :(

Thanks to the hotel and staff this holiday was wonderful i shall be returning hopefully as soon as possible :):):) xxxxxxxxxx

We booked this hotel all inclusive for 8 days, the property is well decorated, nice & clean rooms, and a lovely swimmingpool. Food is ok, however the service is the worst I ever had, we are travelling often in 4 & 5* hotels, but never ever we received such a bad service, all inclusive customers get discriminated all over, staff is demotivated and very often rude and unhelpful when asking the simplest questions about their own property...
Stay away from this hotel if you wanne have holidays without worries staff is not caring at all!
