“Well pleased with Club Rosa Rivage”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

Having just returned from 7 nights we have been well pleased with our stay. Having read recent reviews ,i can say we did have reservations into what to expect. Well just to say it was an enjoyable stay. The staff are most welcoming, the rooms are clean spacious and the maids do a super job, clean bedding towels etc.The food was variable, and there was always a variety to suit most people. Yes the fly problem is a real one,but i did notice steps have been made to try and minimise the fly problem with the use of electric fly traps.Having ventured out of the complex into the nearby town the fly problem isnt just a hotel problem. If you go with an open mind you will be well pleased, although the hotel mainly houses our European partners namely the Germans, sun beds were plentifull and readly available all day.The entertainment team did a good job, always encouraging participation, but taking no for an answer if you didnt wish to get involved. Staff at the pool bar were brill, for a small tip of 1 dinar approx 40p they would keep you well watered all day long. Well worth a visit, think you will enjoy.

To be fair it was clean and spotless throughout our stay which is pretty important when your on foreign grounds in my opinion. On arrival at midday(cracking the flags so to speak!) we were told by the girl on reception to go for lunch and at that point i was thinking i just want my keys and get to get in my holiday attire as at this point i was in my travelling gear which wasnt summer friendly as i had just flown from manchester! We went back to the reception and was given the keys to our room and informed that the english get the best rooms (mmmmmmm really!) and our luggage was taken to our room which was OK:) On the way i was engulfed by the smell of sewage which i wasnt too pleased about but the room didnt smell, although it wasnt quite the standard i expected from the brochure/website images (but is it ever!) A/C worked fine, we had a nice room which is basically a bed for the night and somewhere to shower and change.
First day we were head pecked by either the Spa guy selling facials and massages or Ali BaBa selling trips, after telling the spa guy to come and see me the day later he backed off and Ali BaBa thought that once we had seen the rep we wouldnt book with him although we did book the 1/2 day boat trip which we enjoyed although the transfers were an adventure! And I booked a massage which was excellent and a bargain! Reading previous reviews i would say you cant please everyone as our stay was enjoyable, now the food....not quite my cup of tea but i am a fussy bugger and english so at breakfast some form of sausage in a gravy looking substance wasnt for me, saying that i always found something i liked, by the end of the week i couldnt bare the thought of eating in the buffet restraunt in the evening so we ventured to Sousse to the Farmers Steak restaurant on the recommendation from Amber our rep....thanks Amber best meal of the week! £40.00 for 2 fillet steaks + sides, 2 deserts, 2 vinos and 2 beers..it was amazing highly recommended! To sum up we had a chilled week (prior to the head peck on the first day) bar staff loveley, maids did a cracking job. I would go back....you get what you pay for!

Room Tip: Ask for the bungalos they seem to be the recently refurbished rooms.

To be short on Club Sunshine Rosa Rivage; we absolutely had a great stay. Friendly and helpful staff, big pools, a calm and relaxing atmosphere throughout the hotel and a great environment. The breakfast served by the hotel was one of the best we ever had. One can choose from a variety in tasty food amongst other yoghurts, pancakes, omelettes, cereals etc. If you prefer to lay down and relax at the beach instead of a swimming pool, you will be lucky when you see the white (!!!) sandy beach. Furthermore the personnel was helpful and friendly and really added value to our stay at Club Sunshine Rosa Rivage. Monastir area has lots of going for; it is a beautiful old town with plenty to see and to do. Value for money at Club Sunshine Rosa Rivage is really good so would definitely recommend the hotel/area to others.

First impression was good, looked clean & was welcomed with a drink. Staff seemed really friendly & loved making a fuss of our daughter. We didn't have to wait that long before getting the keys to our room & had help with our luggage. The room was clean & fresh with a unique ceiling & spacious bathroom. We headed to the restaurant for lunch & there was a wide variety to chose from however noticed flies we're a BIG issue! After unpacking & getting settled in we headed for the poolside which was very busy & we had a job to get 2 sun loungers but the sun was out so we were all really happy:-) the next day my fiancé got up early to put the towels down & even at 6:00 there wasn't many spaces left. We were later approached by the lifeguard who said he would put our towels out daily with cushions for us if we payed him 40dinar (£16) - so we did. However this was only done for 3days before we discovered he'd gone (with our money). It didn't take us long to work out the hotel was 98% Germans & 2% other but were lucky we met an English couple with a little girl so it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. When we got back to our room we were nearly knocked out with the smell of sewerage! It was so bad me & my girl was wrenching, this problem could not be sorted so we asked reception to move us to which they said we'd have to wait till the next day, but we were not happy at all as we couldn't even get a shower, so after some time they moved us in the end to a room just behind. The air con was really loud but I didn't mention this as anything was more bearable than that smell. The beach was a few steps away from the poolside & the staff would clear away the seaweed daily but the sea wasn't the cleanest. Food was repetitive for lunch/dinner but must say you couldn't go hungry as there was always something for everyone. Food that was supposed to be served hot was just warm/cold. Some staff were really happy & attentive whilst other grumpy & rude! Tables weren't the cleanest & were hardy laid properly as I was always in search for cutlery, napkins & salt n pepper. Food was bland & not seasoned at all, although I did enjoy the real Tunisian dishes but this was only Saturday nights. We noticed some tables had bottles of water/coke on them & were given real good service where as we always had to ask for a drink, this was because the staff were getting tipped. We did tip where we though we had good service but don't think it's fair that unless you do you don't get the service you should. Bar staff on the other hand were really happy & done their jobs well & always cleared away empties & plates from around the poolside. Entertainment was shocking! Kids disco from 20:30-21:00 with the same songs for 2wks (but my girl loved it by the way) other than that there wasn't much else so would strongly advice if your a couple this really is not the place for you as there isn't even else where outside the hotel you could go. We went to monistair on the train which was 30mins late & took 50mins to get there so we only had 2 hrs to shop! Reception couldn't change my travellers cheques till 16:00 even know (Thompson say its 24hrs) we thought we could find a bank whilst there but they were all closed so we didn't enjoy it as we would of liked too! We did go to sousse twice- the outdoor market which was real good & had some good bargains but when we got a taxi the 2nd time to the other part it wasn't a good experience at all! We were taken to a shop first where we felt we had to buy from before going to where we first intended on going, the driver was crazy & very dangerously driving no handed whilst dancing to his very loud music whilst my 2 yr old was in the car! No seat belts, no handles to pull windows down & he started the car with a screw driver in the engine :-/ we decided we weren't leaving the hotel again as it was safer that way! The spa therapist will bug you 3/4 times daily for you to book treatments & he really doesn't get the hint! He would pester my little girl even when he knew she didn't like it! I understand it's all about the money for these workers in Tunisia as its a poor country but can become annoying when you just want to relax on your holiday. We were into our 2nd wk when a lorry load of new cushions were delivered for all to use for free! I wasn't happy as I'd payed 40dinar for mine so spoke with the manager who was happy to give half the money back to us & said to go to reception- it took us a whole wkend to get 20dinar back as it was clear they didn't want part with the money! A german couple was in the same position as us & got their money back too. The lifeguard was apparently sacked. The maid was brill & always had fresh towels/sheets & decorated the beds with our pj's & petals, the beds/pillows were really comfortable. We had 2 days of torrential rain but the sun soon made an appearance again so it didn't spoil our holiday. On our last morning we were told by amber the rep that we could get breakfast at 6:00 but staff were still setting up & it took me 15mins to get milk for my cereal, bread didn't come out till 6:30 & we discovered they put food on bain-maries cold onto heated pipes with water in but there were eggs with signs saying 6-8 mins so when my fiancé asked the chef why is the food cold he just shrugged & said its normal & it's heated for 3hrs! This explained a lot as to why throughout our holiday food was never served pipping hot as they relied on the water heating the cold food up! They finally cooked us up an omelette but clearly didn't want too, I noticed smashed glass all over the floor that must of happend the night before & was just left there which could be dangerous if anyone slipped or fell onto it! All in all not a good leaving memory! I'm not going to go on any longer but all the little things really do add up in the end but it's such a shame as the place could be really good if only they followed standards & were consistent throughout.

Room Tip: Try & get a 2nd floor room as they looked more private & had a balcony.

Without a doubt the worst Hotel we have ever stayed in, after reading the reviews we gave Thomson the opportunity of moving our Hotel - they came back with " we assure you all points have been addressed" . In short the staff were very rude, the facilities and accommodation are dirty, the food is very poor and luke warm, bar food was non existent - apart from buffet left over food from previous days, there are not two alternative restaurants.... Just one which serves plated food from the buffet in the main restaurant. Bottled water was re-filled from the post mix ( local coke) dispenser, rooms had broken tiles on the floor, bathrooms floors flooded when showering. Pool was filthy, surounding grass was just full of cigarette buts and debri ,lack of sun loungers that were not broken, all drinks served in worn plastic beakers, Wifi only available in front of reception. Beach towels, Safes and air-conditioning to the rooms are all at an extra cost. Fitness center was 3 or 4 bits of broken and rusty kit. There was children's entertainment even if you don't want it, and can bear consistent drowning of noise to the tunes of '....arms up knees bend ra ra ra. Thomson's answer to our complaint was total agreement that they had not delivered on the brochure details and had lower customer feedbacks over this time.......and thankyou - in otherwords we got your money and now go away!!

Room Tip: Choose another venue!!

Where do I Start.......... We booked the holiday in store with Thompson on their recommendation, as we were open to locations. At the time the Rosa Rivage didn’t have any reviews on trip advisor due to it only recently being taken over by Thompson’s and its supposed renovation/reopening.
The images looked good and it had all we were looking for, for a nice relaxing family holiday..... on a budget.
Over the course of the 8 weeks before we flew we noticed a lot of negative reviews being placed on trip advisor and started to panic to the point where the Thursday before we flew we went back to Thompson and tried to get moved as we were concerned about the food hygiene etc. Thompson were useless and said at best we could pay £50 each if we were not satisfied but wouldn't comment on under what circumstances we would get moved even if there were hygiene or health and safety issues.
In the end we went and were pleasantly surprised. The hotel was spotlessly clean, our room was very tidy and cleaned everyday (as others have previously mentioned fresh towels and toilet roll every day) we did tip the maid and some of the other staff which does go a long way and you do find that you do get preferential treatment if you make the effort.
The food was great, plenty of choice for breakfast, lunch and evening meals which does vary and "is not" the same day in day out. You do have to time it right though as although they bring out food regular as its buffet it does go quick and especially with breakfast things like croissants get left uncovered by idiots who don't think to cover the food back up after they have taken something. A couple of previous reviews mentioned drinks served in thimbles???? All our drinks came in normal sized glasses.
We got up early to get loungers (which were very uncomfortable) as usually by 8am they’re all gone. However we did meet up with another English family who tipped the lifeguard and he would put towels out for them every morning to reserve. We were early risers so this didn't bother us.
The service by the pool was good, glasses and cups etc were collected regular and there was always plenty of snacks, we used to get the popcorn and pancakes on an afternoon around 3pm.
Amber the Thompson rep was ok, we had a meeting on the first day where she explained about Monastir and Sousse and the “do's” and “dont's”. We booked the Camel Caravan and Music Mayhem, which were good. We also took the "noddy train" from the hotel to Monastir which was ok just beware of the street sellers as they try to put things on you saying "its free" and "souvenir" and once its on then they want paying.
We found that when on the excursions you get to see other hotels, some seem a lot worse than others which is why the Rosa Rivage is a 4*. Hotels in Tunisia cant be compared to hotels elsewhere around the world. They are of a good standard but a 4* in Dubai would be quite a different experience to a 4* in Tunisia.

The only negative things with the hotel we found were the main bed in our room, it was very hard almost like lying on a table. We also need to extend the room as our flight was at 2:30am and we should have vacated our room by 12. This was a bit of an issue as the day manager kept saying to come back and see him later. In the end we spoke to the main manager, a very helpful and friendly person who said it would be fine and he confirmed this with the day manager. With these things as an exception we had a fantastic time and have considered booking again next year.

We had read some blogs about taking whiskey and giving this as a tip/gift to the manager to ensure we would be looked after. We did this however we gave it to the wrong person lol (night manager). We explained to the main manager but by this time it was too late and I guess had been partly consumed!! Something to bear in mind for next time as I think if it had got into the right hands it would have made our stay even more enjoyable.

Please take a look at some of our pictures so you can make your own minds up

Room Tip: Take a bottle of whiskey for the manager! :)

Well after reading the awful reviews on here I don't mind admitting we were a little bit apprehensive about our stay in Tunisia.
One of my main worries was that we might end up sat round the pool next to some of the illiterate idiots on here who find flies, Germans and foreign food offensive!
As a family of four we really enjoyed our 10 day holiday. The Rosa Rivage has a lot going for it - most notably excellent food, friendly staff, great pools and a white sandy beach with sea as warm as a jacuzzi.
Parts of this hotel easily warrant its four stars. Others do let it down, but this wasn't enough to spoil our holiday - the positives easily outweigh the negatives.
The food as stated above is very, very good. Lots of choice, decent quality. Breakfast consisted of freshly made pancakes, omelettes and fried eggs cooked to order, croissants, yoghurts, cereals, toast etc etc. If you couldn't find lots to like here then quite simply you are a moron.
For lunch you can either return to the main restaurant or eat burgers, pizza, salad and chips at the pool bar.
During the afternoons iced melon was served down at the pool as well as more fresh pancakes, cakes and croissants and popcorn.
Evenings saw a wide selection of food back at the restaurant - there was always two types of pasta, pizza and a barbecue set up on the lawn which varied from lamb to swordfish.
Dinner can be a little chaotic - you need to time it right or you will arrive to find loads of uncleared tables and harrassed staff. In my opinion they should make the drinks self service and let the staff concentrate on keeping the dining areas clean and tidy.
There are two large pleasant pools plus two 'baby' pools, and access to the beach is right between the two pools.
The beach was lovely - hardly any seaweed and nice clear water. Watersports are cheap - a banana boat ride was £4 per person and pedalos are free for 30 mins.
The sunbeds are uncomfortable white plastic. They did let the hotel down and should be upgraded - as well as the tatty white plastic furniture by the bar. Most sunbeds were bagged by 7am - I suspect the majority were saved at midnight the previous evening. Having said that we always got a space, either by getting up at 6 and then going back to bed or just by being at breakfast by 7.30am which with kids is not a hardship!
Drink selection is good - red, white and rose wine, beer, all spirits, cocktails. The juice was very sugary though.
Be prepared to tip a few dinar a night - it really helps get great service and will only cost pence in real terms.
We didn't really have much to do with the entertainment apart from the mini disco which is standard all over! The evening shows we did see looked pretty mediocre, but really wasn't expecting anything else.
There are not many British families. This is not the place to come if you want to make friends or send your children to a kids club aimed at English children. This didn't bother us at all but might some people. All the staff speak English however and were very welcoming to us Brits.
Our room was a good size, kept very clean by the maid and close to the main hotel. It only had a shower which was a nuisance but the a/c was extremely good which was our main concern!
The spa is really worth a visit. Don't expect Champneys, but treatments are really cheap. A pedicure is £8 and I had a package of treatments which lasted two and a half hours for £35.
My husband used the gym every day and wasn't charged any extra for it and there is also a decent kids playground.
Overall this holiday suited us just fine - we paid around half what we would have for a four star hotel in Greece or Turkey in August and also appreciated the short 3 hour flight time.
If you are a family on a tight budget, which we were, or a young couple who just want chilled out pool and beach time, good food and all inclusive drinks then this is a good option. You won't be in the lap of luxury - but you won't have paid luxury prices. Relax and enjoy yourselves, you'll have a great time.
