“Great beach! worthless animation team....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2009

Club Thapsus exists already more than 20 years therefore don't expect hyper modern facilities or state of the art architecture. Chambers (sea visibility) such as you can expect them for the price which you have paid. Swimming pool and the area around the pool as well the beach are very nice and are well maintained. The staff looks grumpy (with here and there a few exceptions of course)

The food rather simple but it worked fine for us as All incl. guests. Point of criticism is the annoying evening animation program. The "music" (allot of worn out 90's hits) plaid too loud and a " DJ" that finds necessary to roar something in de mic after every 3 sec. unintelligible is very annoying. The 2 day trip excursion to the Sahara and other curiosities is certainly worth the 120 dinar for people who want see more than the range and hotel. We had a fine holiday and certainly for the price which we have paid for it! If incredible staff, great haute cuisine and splendid luxurious atmospheres work for you please stay away. If you dont expect a 10 out of 10 then this place could work for you!

Club Thapsus isn't the best and it's not the worst hotel I've ever stayed in.
If you use it as a base for a trip to Tunisia with a nice beach and a generally clean sea and you don't expect the Ritz-Carlton, you're OK.
The positives and negatives:
The beach really IS a good one, although the space and number of beach chairs is far too small for the size of the hotel. Be prepared to reserve a spot as early as 7 a.m., and then to occasionally fight with other tourists who take your chair and throw your towels, etc., on the sand.
The rooms are cleaned daily, but the towels, etc., are a little shaky.
The "all inclusive" really isn't... only certain kinds of alcohol are free, for example. The food is just OK. It's not horrible but not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, and the big fish being grilled on Tuesday when we arrived seemed to be the same one being grilled the following Wednesday. That's too long to keep fish outside in the heat for 3 hours a night even if it's refrigerated the rest of the time. IA couple of members of our party experienced stomach problems that ended when they stopped eating it.
Service can be surly and sullen. The female bartenders in the all-inclusive bar looked like they'd rather stab you in the eye than serve you, but the maids and some of the other people were normal. Small tips help.
The beach vendors sell some nice things, at times, although of course they're overpriced and they'll screw you if you don't know what you're doing. One or 2 practically need to be beaten to get them to leave you alone.
The hotel ran out of Tunisian dinar repeatedly. This is just idiotic.
The front desk people range from moronic to fairly helpful and a couple of them are good at taking baksheesh and then not delivering on your request, or delivering either slowly or inadequately.
Internet usually works but not always, but there seems to be fairly reliable wireless.
There's a guy who calls himself Ali Baba, and he speaks almost any language you can think of, so (unlike some of the other reviewers on this site, he knows the difference between Russians and Slovaks, for example. He runs a camel caravan company that provides an interesting experience, and he can steer you in the right direction if you need other things, too.
We took a couple of day trips, and I'd recommend seeing El-Jem and its Roman ruins that rival the coliseum. I also hired a driver to take me to Tunis and Carthage, so I got to see a bit more than the beach but I had to do that myself, because the local representative for our tour group was too lazy to be around the hotel for more than about 10 minutes a day.
The hotel entertainment was awful.
In short, I wouldn't seek out this place but you can do worse. You can also do much better, probably within a short distance.

It wasn´t the best neither worst vacation, but... The beach and hotel surroundings are OK, gratefull, clean, the garden was green and soft, everything looks fresh, pools pure. Our room was on the right-hand side on 3th floor, very nice, huge with amazing sea-side overlook. But actually, it was our 3th room we´ve got it... When we came there, the reception gave us terrible small dark room on the ground-floor, the bed was broken, lights doen´t work, so we didn´t accepted it, try to change the room asap, so the receptionist gave us another one. Unfortunately it was the same room on the first floor. We were very dissatisfied and we´ve complainted to representative of our travel agency, just after that reception moved us to "regular" room. The other unpleasant thing was housekeeping... The housekeeper was so impertinent! Everytime we missed the toilet paper rolls, clean towels or clean beding. Once I asked him for toilet paper and he told me he gave me a toilet paper if I gave him a cigaret! Another time he asked my fiancé for money!! Unbelievable...
We were a bit dissapointed with food, every single day the same for breakfast and for dinner... No vegets, no fruits..:( We didn´t have all inclusive servis, so we have to buy drinks, which was so expensive in the hotel. Bottle of mineral water was 2 dinnars in hotel, but if you walk to the shop about 5-7 minuts away, you can buy the same bottle for 0,40 dinnar.
And what we liked the best? Fantastic beach, pure ocean, a lot of sports you can do there (tenis, para-sailing, petang, archery...), animations all day, little ZOO and trip to Colosseum in El Jem... And by the way: I´m a blondie, so we have a lot of "fun" with arabic men, my fiancé hold me like a tiger:)...

If a funny animation team and the beautiful beach are the only thing you are looking for, you are in the right place. However, these are not enough for good holiday, right? The restaurant, food and some rooms are really bad!! I say some because we had to change room after 2 days of insisting complains.Complains;room's balcony door was not closing(ground floor=welcome for everyone outside),had a awfull humid smell with no airco.(because hotel says temperature is cold enough,so we switched off all rooms¿) Did it change these conditions?NO!!Only door could lock but this time we were on the 3rd floor anyway. If you are planning to book for all inclusive that is a waste of money because you will end up eating in a restaurant anyway. And if you want to have a bottle of wine or non-alcoholic in the restaurant you have to pay!! because all inclusive is only for glass not for bottle. If you are going for half pension, dinner is EXCLUDING drinks!!We are not really picky about the food but that was the worst food we have ever seen.We didnt even see couscous and tuna fish which are traditional foods for Tunisia and not even tasteful fruits for filling up your stomach. If u are in Tunisia donot come back without doing the Sahara excursion. That was the best with food and everything. It cost 120€ p.p but it iwas worth it!! Moreover, Mahdia is the closest city center to this hotel and has no attraction except hassling by locals from 5 to 50 years old.
