Aware of 1 hour & 45 minutes transfer from airport. Arrived at 0425 to find one guy on reception dealing with 20 tired guests, no welcome just a bit of chaos. Travelled with Thomsons who feel that it was ok to have welcome meeting at 10am. This was the only negative I can give - food & attentiveness from waiters good, probably noticeable bit more attentive to other nationalities. Room 408 with fantastic sea views & loads of room. Loads to get involved in if you desire to be active in the sun by courtesy of animation team, took advantage of their spa. Everywhere clean & nothing too much trouble.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view room

GENERAL: I've seen some recent reviews on here which do seem rather harsh. We stayed 15th-29th September 2013 and we enjoyed our stay. 5* luxury it isn't, but the hotel is nice and very clean. The food is good, there is plenty to choose from, lunch by the pool I wouldn't recommend due to flies, but the restaurant inside is open so no problem. The staff are always friendly and polite, we had a beach side bungalow which was nice.

FOOD: We were not ill at any stage, which some people seem to have been. But then we didn't eat by the pool where all the flies were. The food selection really was fine, they do some theme nights like spanish, tunisia etc but you can still eat the usual food they offer. There was pizza, spaghetti which the chef made while you wait to your specifications, chips, meat dishes, veg, salad and light bites etc. Always plenty of desserts to try. And breakfast had everything you would expect including pancakes, egg, bacon, sausage, croissants, cereals etc.

TRIPS/DAYS OUT: If you are looking for an action packed holiday this isn't the place for you. We did quad bikes and a pirate ship trip, other than that the selection wasn't brilliant to be honest. You could do a shopping trip, train ride and a few other bits. But if you are looking for lots to do I think you will struggle here. There was an overnight trip which had various activities on such as visiting some places were movies were filmed, and off road trip etc, but this was quite pricey.

ROOMS: We had a beach side bungalow, I recommend this as it was well worth the extra cost. We were away from any noise at night and had somewhere to sit outside in the evenings. Our room was very clean and had everything we need. There is only 1 English channel which is BBC World News, but then you probably won't be watching much TV on holiday anyway.

THE HOTEL: There are a few areas of the hotel that could do with a spruce up, but that is the case with most 4* places. The reception area is spotless, and there is free wifi in this area. There are a couple of shops one in reception area (which is a newsagents basically) and one downstairs which is a gift shop. You have x 2 pool tables and table tennis indoors downstairs. There is a spa which offers massage etc, but you do have to pay for those services. There is a gym, but that consists of a treadmill pretty much, no weights and hardly any machines. There is a bar/snack area by the pool outside, beware the many flies here. The beach area is nice, people do walk at the front selling things, but they aren't allowed up to the chairs to bother anyone, so no problem there. In the evening there are chairs upstairs where you can relax, and a balcony area too which was nice to sit out on at night. Alcoholic drinks are weak, but that is the case most places. Lots of cocktails to try.

ENTERTAINMENT AT THE HOTEL: The animation team dance occasionally, and organize a few games. But really there is not much going on in the way of day time entertainment. Table tennis tournament, archery, darts, water polo, beach volleyball and aqua gym is about your lot. Most people don't take part so most things don't go ahead. The entertainment team don't hassle you, some of them come and have a chat occasionally, there were a nice friendly bunch.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT: This is your standard fairly naff stuff to be honest. Comedy show, ladyboys one night, saxophone player with a singer, that sort of thing. We didn't spend many nights watching the entertainment, it wasn't our sort of thing

SUMMARY: A nice place for a relaxing break in a clean hotel. There is an airport transfer of around 2 hours, so just be aware of that. Rep is helpful and has good advice on the area etc. Don't expect lots to do every day, and the range of trips out available isn't great. I recommend a beach side bungalow, we were happy with our room compared to others we saw. Food is fine, don't eat by the fly infested pool area and you should be fine. All hotel staff work hard and are very friendly/patient. I probably wouldn't go back, purely because there are other places I want to try now.

Room Tip: Go for a beach side bungalow, you won't regret the extra cost!

Once again we were a bit apprehensive because of some of the reviews we had read.We need not have been . The transfer is just under 2 hours but is interesting we even got to see a wedding procession at midnight ! On arrival we were directed to the restaurant where there were salads and drinks but we were not hungry so wen back to reception to check in which was seemless and effecient.
The porter took our bags to our room which was fine If I was picky the bed could have been a bit bigger but it wasok. The aircon was a bit hit and miss but it was the contact switch on the terrace door , a bit of cardboard and an elastoplast fixed that for the rest of the holiday .
Food good selection for all meals only ate in the restaurant fish was superb fresh every day the tunisian specials at night were the best for me but there was always fresh cooked pasta meat and fish with plenty of salads and cakes .
Pool bar self sevice drinks except beer and spirits afternoon tea was a bit hit and miss .
Pool great pool area no problem with sunbeds I get upearly any way at 7am you could get a bed where you want and no one even the late risers were ever without .
Beach great beach lovely clean sea gently shelving
Tips I only tip at the end and I find that you need to build the expectation of the tip from day one with conversation hand shakes and a smile works for me .
Would I go back yes .
Gripe couldn't get a late checkout room and the spa has no hairdriers not a problem for me but Mrs was a bit stressed when we moaned about it a room was available great when your dripping in high humidity but we won't dwell on the one negative .

Room Tip: Get a room away from the pool if you want an early night the animation stage is outside However it...

4 of us stayed at the El Mansour from 15th September for 14 nights, we had really good rooms on the top floor 608 and 609, very large and lots of coat hangers and drawer space and amazing sea views. The hotel is clean and most of the staff are good but there are quite a few who ought to consider a career change as it was obvious they really did not want to be there. Some waiters totally ignored us, others were just downright rude unless you tipped, but my philosophy is that I tip after I receive good service not before and I always wait until the end of the holiday. Our first few days had air conditioning in the rooms but as the heat rose (31 degrees) for some unknown reason the air con was switched off and was only available after 9pm for some unknown reason. It took most of the holiday before it was switched back on so that you could shower without feeling you needed another one straight after!! I totally agree about the flies, they were a massive nuisance and danger to health at the pool bar but we also had them in the main restaurant and felt that those electronic fly killers would have been a good idea. We laughed at the toaster at breakfast, it did not rotate but just had 2 elements top and bottom and took about 10 minutes to half way brown the bread. After 2 days one of the elements fell off and was left. A domestic 2 slice toaster was brought but obviously this could not cope and on our last day a brand new rotating toaster appeared! All four coffee machines had notices on to say you could not get white coffee etc but you could get espresso short which is very strong and well 'short'. If you topped this up with milk your coffee was cold, if you topped it up with water from the urn more often than not the water was cold. I asked why all of the machines around the complex were out of order and nobody seemed to know. The only assumption we came up with was that they had forgotten to order the powdered milk etc to top the machines up. There were no real complaints about the hotel just silly little things that could have made this holiday amazing because the beach and sea were fabulous. We had a boat trip out to see the dolphins which is well worth doing but haggle the price as a couple we met paid 100 Turkish dinar for two people and we paid 70. The animation team were very friendly especially my favourite Madou who tolerated my terrible skills at Petanque and still gave me hugs. We had met Aymen (who was in charge of the animation team) at the Riu Belle Vue in Hammamet 2 years earlier and he always made a point of coming to talk to us. The rep Cheryl is a very nice lady and if you are going to this hotel she would really appreciate someone taking her some Typhoo tea bags as she can't get them out there. All in all we enjoyed our holiday but won't be going back as we felt that the Riu Belle Vue was superior in standards to the El Mansour. Maybe Riu will take some of these points on board.

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for a sea view 609 and 608 were brilliant

Our all inclusive family holiday to the hotel rui el mansour was one of the best I've had. The hotel was clean, staff were friendly, the food was great, fresh, varied and tasty! My partner and I have eaten all over the world and enjoy our food, and we weren't disappointed at all. The traditional Tunisia restaurant is a must do! Our rep Cheryl was extremely friendly and helpful, we couldn't of asked for a more experienced and knowledge rep. A great woman with a wonderful personality, who loves her job and would go above and beyond for you! The entertainment staff were always full of enthusiasm and the activities available for us to participate in we're really good fun! Just as a family we also played tennis and volleyball, swam in the beautiful sea and visited the madina. You could do as much or as little as you liked, day and night. We had children from 10years old all the way up to 30! And all loved the happy, fun but relaxing atmosphere of the hotel. We will definitely be back!

My wife & I recently visited the El Mansour, Mahdia. We were both really looking forward to the holiday, as we have not visited Tunisia before. First impressions of the hotel are great, check in great, staff great, really friendly (apart from in the restaurant). The second day in, we had both developed stomach upsets (put mildly). The food hygiene within the pool bar, & main restaurant is bad. Can't comment on the food really, after the second day we were on bread rolls. We normally get on with any holiday & have a great time. But Tunisia we found to be a bad experience, & one which we will never be repeating again.

Room Tip: hotel everything we expected from a RUI except the restaurant food hygiene appalling

Hotel is approx 1 hour 45 minutes from the Airport but it says that in the brochure

hotel is spotlessly clean, and the rooms great, we are in 627 and 629 the views are fantastic

food is probably the best i have had in a hotel over here, with most being cooked fresh in front of you.

service and staff very good

yes there are towels on the sunbeds, but you will always find one

would definite recommend this to friends and family

entertainment team, make s big effort, and are friendly without being pushy
