“Nour Palace Resort Mahdia”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

This was a most enjoyable stay. The staff at the hotel could not have been more helpful. My shower head didn't fit, this was replaced immediately. Our rooms were clean and so was all of the hotel. We felt comfortable wherever we were in the hotel. The food was good with enough variation to keep us wondering what would be on the buffet for each meal. Our rooms were spacious and included a fridge. We chose rooms that looked out over the pool and sea with balconies. There is entertainment for those that wish. There is a good sized indoor pool. The train station is just five minutes away to take you to Mahdia just four short stops away or you can take a taxi or walk along the beech, its about 3 miles into the centre via the beach. The train also goes to Sousse and Monastir and several little place inbetween. Not many English speaking tourists come to this part of Tunisia, it is mostly Germans, Italians and French so breakfast caters for their tastes.

Room Tip: In the winter choose rooms on the east side facing the pool, these get the sun for most of the day

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Take a gang electric lead for all your chargers/ kettle as only 1 electric socket.
Food was much the same at each meal and became boring after a few days. The hotel has a Tunisian and Italian restaurant open on certain days but there is no menu choice and is a set meal starting at 7.30pm The entertainment team programme was for small children and not geared for adults and was cringeworthy to watch. The all inclusive alcohol on offer was of a very poor quality and all spirits were undrinkable. The wines were barely passable and unfortunately branded shots worked out at around £10 a go.. Outside of the hotel was very little. No alternative bars that served alcohol and unlit streets.. The beach to the hotel was good although the loungers were well worn and uncomfortable. We were the only English staying at the hotel and the staff seemed surprised to find British people there. By day 3 we missed someone to talk to and were beginning to feel a bit isolated. Our transfers were booked via lowcost holidays who used a local coach operator. We arrived n Tunisia 8am and sat on a baking hot coach-alone until 10.30am in the airport, Waiting for another couple from a different flight to arrive. We set off for the hotel with no offer of a water to rehydrate us for a two hour journey. We had expected to be at the hotel for mid morning not the afternoon. On our return journey, we were collected at 5 .50 for a 10am flight back home and started to tour round hotels to collect people for the airport. At our supposed check in time, we were still an hour away from the airport. We arrived fraught and anxious and found check in closed fortunately they opened it for us and we had no time to grab some water as we had not had fluid or food since the evening before. We were rushing to get to departures and only just made the flight. A complaint went to lowcost holidays who replied after a month to say the coach company had not responded and as we got the transfers we booked they were not interested.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less noise from those above as tile floors

We have stayed at Nour Palace for nine nights, and I must say that we have enjoyed the experience and I would fully recommend it to other tourists.

The Rooms were spacious and much nicer than the pictures that you see over the internet. The view from the window is very stunning, as it overlooks the gardens, the pool and the sea.

The actual hotel is very much like a palace. The forum area is huge, full of arabian character, and you easily get dazled by the marble floors, and as you gase into the area, you get a mirage of an oasis.

The food is extremley good, and presented beautifully. They offered such a wide variety of dishes it is impossible not satisfy the needs of anyone.

The swiming pools and the beaches are extremley clean.

The staff are friendly, but wish they would smile more oftten.

The evening entertainment is excellent.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the 3rd floor facing East

Nour 'Palace' hotel really is a palace, with beautiful architecture, marble pillars and floors and continual things to do, it is a fabulous place to stay. I can't believe how little we payed to stay in such luxury. Of course English 5* hotels will never be the same as foreign 5* hotels, especially somewhere like Tunisia so don't expect to have the same standards as you would here but everything was always clean and tidy and the staff continually made you feel like $1million. The "Animation" (entertainment) team kept you entertained all day and evening with shows every night and activities all day (of which of course you could opt out of if you wished and sunbathe instead). There was volleyball, aerobics, archery, darts, belly dancing classes and all sorts. There hotel has its own private beach on which you can do all sorts of watersports - we went parasailing which although only lasted 5 minutes and cost 25 dinar (£10) it was well worth it. We also chose to hire a car and visit Sousse, El Gem and Monastir as well as take an arranged trip on a pirate ship and go camel riding. Anyway.. we were all inclusive so had unlimited access to drinks, including wine, beer and any spirits and 3 set meals a day as well as bar snacks in the afternoon. The only thing that put a downer on the holiday was suffering from salmonella poisoning... I think maybe to avoid the fresh fruit and salads as I think it gets washed in local water which us Brits are not used to. Make sure you drink bottled water, don't have ice in your drinks (I think it's homemade) and only eat bread and cooked food. There was a lot of choice of what to eat, so we were happy. I am already planning my trip back here next year.....

Room Tip: If you have a family, pick a room that faces the sea, preferably at the end furthest from reception...

Room and hotel resort:
Room was very clean and comfortable, every day new towels and cleaning. Hotel resort is in comparison with Tunisian enviroment in general very very clean and nice. Hotel staff ok.

Beach and sea:
the beach is very clean, water crystal clear, good place for swimming, if you enjoy sunshinig and beach relaxing this is very best place for you. In comparison with other hotels in Mahdia was this beach the best one.

Food and restaurant:
contrary to the look of the hotel the restaurant is not so nice, the overall look = like an average restaurant, the dishes are very old and very used. I think that there is a lack of proper hygiene in this restaurant place, i dont saw the kitchen, but i think rather not to see, the food looks nice, but you have to be careful what are you choosing, I recommend the food that is baked before your own eyes like pizza ... but the hygiene of the food, waitress and overall restaurant is i think very similar to what you see outside on the streets of Mahdia, not worst but definitely not good enought. And always check the dishes before using them because in most cases you will find some piece of old food sticked on. These restaurant place was the only disturbing thing on whole vacation.

Conclusion:
This hotel is definitely best hotel in Mahdia, consider the beach, resort, hotel interior - exterior, event possibilities, i was on the vacation with my girlfriend and we had great time in this place ... My recommendation for vacation in Tunisia, do not try to spare few bucks on the amount of stars, you will definitely regret that. I will recommend this hotel and i can say that i would visit this hotel again, but as I said before be careful with gathering !!!

Room Tip: Definitely the sea view rooms

We have just returned from 2 nights at this hotel, and would unequivocally, unhesitantly advise other travellers to AVOID it!

It was certainly not without its good points (attractive public areas, including a lovely pool, and a good variety of food - this latter certainly seems to have improved since previous reviews). However our problems with the hotel just hugely outweighed them.... to the point where 1 star seems a little generous!

We had 3 main complaints -

(1) 2 days after leaving and we are still both battling with a particularly virulent stomach bug picked up at the hotel. Reading previous reviews with mention of Campylobacter and Shigella, we should perhaps not be surprised....

(2) on our first night we noticed that our air conditioning wasn't working. Unable to sleep in our stifling room, we contacted reception.... who told us that the hotel turns off the AC at night! We informed reception the next morning that we would be seeking alternative accommodation as we couldn't face another sleepless night. We were then advised (by a different receptionist) that the AC WAS in fact kept on overnight... and we must have just had a defective unit in our room. To their credit they upgraded us to a suite.... which was beautifully air-conditioned during the day. However, come the evening..... you guessed it... the AC went off, and we had another hot night. What five-star hotel in a desert country turns off their AC at night?!

(3) on our first night (a Wednesday) we were subjected to extremely loud music from the pool area, which went on from 7pm to 11pm. Even with our windows and doors closed, the music was still loud enough to preclude any chance of sleep. To make matters worse the music was truly, breathtakingly awful - just unremitting, toe-curling, Euro-cheese! God only knows who they thought would actually enjoy this! We enquired at reception as to when this might end... and were assured that, although there were 4 hours of it, this was the only night of the week when they played it. Anyway the next night, Thursday - what happens? The same music again, for the same 4 hours. And when I say 'the same' - I mean, literally, the same CD!

So, in summary, after 2 sleepless nights, a lack of air con, relentless obtrusive music, lying staff and an acute gastrointestinal infection...... would you recommend this place?!

I stayed at this hotel in august 2012, really looking forward to a change from our usual visits to egypt. I travel alone with my daughter and as two women, we are somewhat used to the attention we get, especially in the arab countries. however, the tunisian men, especially in and the LOCAL surroundings took 'attention' to a whole new level.

ARRIVAL- Short flight, very good(a first for thomas cook!) arrived at enfidha(former zine el abidine ben ali)airport, all was well, very nice staff, fast through passport control- no problems there. So we got onto the transfer coach, only to think that we were NEVER going to get off. When the travel agent told us around a 45 minute transfer we never realised that 45 minutes in tunisian terms is more like 2 hours. Despite the time, the transfer was FUN. Tunisia is a bland country, yet very interesting, the butchers seem to have fresh cow/camel/horse heads hanging from their shop fronts, which was so far fetched from at home! we loved this experience driving through the little villages, and along the coast watching the locals fishing for octopus! We then arrived at the hotel, very relieved. First thoughts, very nice building, not the most modern place, but not that old you feel as though your great great nanna may have stayed here. Very clean, with a woman buffing the floors in reception(she worked so so hard!) We were checked in, and then went to get a drink, while we waited for our cases to be taken to our room, which NEVER happened(if you were english). Realising this we carted our suitcases off to our room. Over crumpled carpet tripping here there and everywhere.

THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAY- We experienced good and bad, and just damn right disgusting situations. The keys to the door of your room is a card, which is swiped and then gains you entry, may i just warn you now, we couldnt on many occasions enter our room and had to trek to reception, SOAKING WET, to get the key changed which i was not pleased about. We did the parasailing off the boat which was amazing and the boys at the beach could not have been nicer or more helpful. The photographers in the hotel were a big problem, and i do warn you if you have booked this hotel, NO PHOTOGRAPHS. They are very rude sleazy and just in general, not nice men. Especially the younger one which we named worm who every single day without fail asked my daughter 'me take picture of you' even with a resounding no, he tried to take pictures. If they did get pictures of you, they would charge around £40 for about 3. We met a girl called Aneel out there who was a star. She backed us up on our complaints and helped get my daughter food as she had rarely eaten out there, not only due to the lack of choice in food, but because of the constant glare of numerous waiters, leaving her flowers and constantly hassling her 'you want drink?' when she had about 3 bottles of water on the table. flattering at first but after a few days it got ridiculous. Eventually we all got a bit overwhelmed with the amount of things going wrong, we found ants at a table in the lobby, no waiters would serve us as we were british, my daughter was served coke gin and vodka after asking for a coke, at the age of 14!!!!!!! We went to reception, Where the obnoxious stuck up manager told us that she did not care for us, as we were british, she does not like the british, and she was not willing to help us, because again we are british. We tried to contact thomas cook as at this point we were fearing for our safety, which reception were trying to stop us doing. However we were leaving the next day to go home, so we could stay that last night and leave at 4am in the morning but aneel was the problem, she had still 5 days left and no way could she stay there alone, so eventually with a lot of mithering we got her a move, she went to port el kantaoui and enjoyed the rest of her holiday. This holiday was one to remember not for good reasons!!!!!!!

food-rubbish-
cleanliness-quite good. couldnt moan about it really.
staff-some nice, some just weird.
entertainment-good.
