“Charm and lovely!”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

We had our best staying in Tunisia there! First of all is better to know that there are not so much possibilities to stay in Mahdia. Of course I do not speak about Zone Touristice which are starting at 3 km north from Medina and there are a lot of sardinia-boxes there (mass tourism hotels). In mahdia you can choice between Inn El Medina, two flats and one expensive but not characteristic other place. We searched on field for hotels because however I read nice things about Inn El Medina I was afraid about shared bathrooms. Usually doesn't matter for me but now was the first time when we traveled long trip with a small baby. But arriving to this hotel all my fears gone away. It is fantastic because the characteristic and a indescribable charm. Yes, there are shared bathrooms but at every floor and there are only two-three rooms in a floor and bathrooms are permanently cleaned by a lovely lady. The rooms are spacious, some old-fashion furnished and simple. Price was 30 TND / room and we paid other 5 for a heating because was cold there during our staying. It is free wifi which work fine every where. Staff - which is a family - was very friendly and helpful even they don't speak English. If your french is wrong and would asking difficult things just looking evening time to reception when the grandchild is on duty. He speak well English and will help you. Despite of we went to Mahdia only for two days finally we stayed there for-five days. We had a very pleasant stay.
Travelling tips: if you are going from Monastir it is a train (they call it Metro) from Monastir station every 40 minutes. There are no direct trains forward to south! If you are going to south you have to go back to Monastir or Sousse. Another option to take a louage (shared taxi) to El-Jem where is a train station on the main South-North railways. Do not miss the fantastic amphitheater of El-Jem but don't stay there overnight.

We arrived at the hotel without any reservation (November). As was often the case we were one of only a few guests staying at the hotel. We were offered several rooms and selected a small room with a bacony. The rooms do not have views, and many have windows that face into the courtyard. The rooms and the bathrooms are very clean. The breakfast, which was served on the lower level was excellent for the price we paid (30 TN for a double room). Great coffee with milk, fruit, eggs, cake, and of course bread, but with a nice apricot jam. The rooms were simple, but freshly painted. The WiFi generally worked quite well in the common area. The hotel was very quiet (only 3 rooms were occupied) and we had a very pleasant stay.

We stayed two nights in Hotel El Medina, a nice family-run place, full of character. We were in the Sidi Bou Said room overlooking the attractive courtyard where breakfast was served. There is no air-con, but they gave us two fans, which were much needed, and even found a double adaptor for us so we could run both fans and the computer. The bathroom was shared, but just opposite our room and we had a basin in the room. There is WiFi available in the room, but not very strong. The location would be hard to beat - close to the park where all the Ramadan celebrations were taking place, within walking distance to the Borj, where we experienced a late night concert and near the shops and restaurants of the medina.

Room Tip: The Sidi Bou Said room overlooks the courtyard and is close to the bathroom.

Clean but basic place in the medina. We stayed for a cold night in December. An electric heater was provided when asked, but charged extra. The no frills rooms would be cool in the heat of summer but a bit bleak in winter. Friendly and helpful staff.

We stayed at this family-owned Inn for one night. We were greeted by a woman and her son both of whom looked modern, polite and kind, although they were not as welcoming as one would hope (as is usually the case in the south of the country). The place is clean but not so warm at night (needs some heating). Breakfast was nice and the hostel is conveniently located in the heart of the Medina. Actually it is just about what one could ask for in a small town like Mahdia (a clean bed, clean toilets and good food :))

Very cozy place since it has been renovated from an existing house. Very friendly owners who are very helpful. Shared toilets are clean. There are very few budget options in Mahdia & hence this place is not to be missed. Convenient walking distance location to most attractions make it #1.
