“The great hotel”

I couldn't believe there's such a excellent hotel in Tunis like this one!! The facilitities and the view is winderful, From the hotel, u cansee the mediteranean sea downward and also the pool is very nice (but now it's too cold to swim) The lobby is just like in heaven! Plus the service is also great :) keep good work!

This is not your usual 5-star hotel. Admittedly, first impressions make you think that it's a great hotel but it isn't long before you realise that it's not up to a 5 star standard. The hotel décor, apart from a good selection of impressive wall paintings, lacked a bit of colour and design. Floor levels were confusing, so when you thought you were going up, you actually went down. Long corridors meandered throughout the hotel making it easy to miss your turning and end up going the wrong way. There were no windows on my corridor and no lighting on the section where my room was located making it difficult to find the room and then open with the key. I told reception about this and they put the lights on only to take them off again the next day.

Be warned, the rooms are not soundproof. Noise can be so loud it's like sharing your room with someone else, TV and shower noise being the worse offenders; and if you happen to get a room with a communicating door it can be an absolute nightmare. Another unpleasant feature is barking dogs within the vicinity of the hotel that yap all night long in spite of people complaining. Also know that they are making an extension to the hotel, so there was a bit of noise around the pool area. The hotel is also surrounded by at least three construction sites, all having the potential to hammer and drill away during the day – although I have to say the noise was minimal while I was there.

I won't go as far as to say that staff was rude, however they were sulky, uncooperative and even patronising at times.

Also know that the hotel is miles away from anywhere. (Ladies there's not a single shop in sight, and I mean, not a single shop.) You'll need to take a taxi to go anywhere, whether it's to the beach, to get something to eat or to shop in Tunis (30 min drive). You also need to know that you will be systematically ripped off every time you take a taxi – sometimes exorbitantly!! Your taxi from the airport to the hotel will cost you anything from 20 to 35 dinars when in fact it should only cost around 10. You must insist that taxis use their meters and, from the minute you enter the taxi, check the amount that is already displayed and make sure that number 1 is clearly indicated next to the meter (day time fare) or they will make you pay as much as the double. Night time fare starts at 9 pm until 5 am and this is indicated by number 2. Don't rely on the airport information desk to quote you the right fare either. They know that taxis overcharge their customers so you'll not get a fair estimation but rather they'll quote you what they think you might get charged– and it's the same with the staff in some hotels, not to mention what might go on between the one who calls your taxi and the driver. I'm tempted to say – it's nothing less than a racket!

Breakfast was mediocre and the service poor. If you're looking for the refinement of a five star hotel restaurant you'll not find it here. It felt like a canteen. The food in general was acceptable, but nothing more.

You might also like to know that it's a twenty minute, rather isolated, walk from the hotel to the sea. Here you have only hotels, no direct access to the beach and you won't be able to swim in this area.

I would not recommend this hotel for tourists. Perhaps it may be better suited for business travellers attending meetings at the hotel and staying for only a couple of nights.

To sum up, if you don't mind spending time at the hotel or getting cheated whenever you venture out – and if you happen to sleep like a log, then it might suit you.

Everyone else – be warned.

Stayed here for one week for a business trip, the hotel is very clean and very nice. They have good restaurants, a nice fitness center and even a bowling alley for some fun! You need to take a taxi to get to anywhere but its nice! I would stay there again

I stayed at Golden Tulip Tunis on my long weekend getaway. I found it difficult to give this hotel an overall rating because in some aspects it was absolutely outstanding but in the other aspects it was so poor that even did not deserve a 5-star hotel class.

I start with the goodies first. The hotel was located in a uphill location near to a classy suburb of La Marsa. You would enjoy an unblocked view over other classy white-blue houses dotting the hill towards the sea. I stayed in a seaview room and spent quite much time just sitting in the balcony enjoying the view, reading or eating. Tunis residents come down to La Marsa to enjoy sun and sea, but by staying at this hotel you could have them right away all the time.

Another goodie was the hammam (Turkish bath house). It was nicely decorated, well-equipped and not crowded even on weekend prime town when local club members came to relax. I do recommend taking a bath and having sunna there instead of doing so in a characterless room.

Most of the staff were polite, attentive and smiled a lot, esp. housekeeping and those in business centre and restaurants. But I also encountered several staff members in the front desk who didn't care about guests waiting at all.

I ate in one of the cafe-type restaurants and ordered room services. Food quality was in general good, but breakfast was awful (fortunately it's free). Very limited choices and tasteless (Tunisians didn't have breakfast?).

Now it comes to the worst part. Room facilities were extremely poor: there was no water boiler or complimentary water. When I phoned the housekeeping, they confirmed politely my understanding that neither was not available and I could drink tap water; the room was not clean, e.g. the room service menu was lying on the working desk with dust that I could see; TV did not receive signals clearly, so Richard Quest became a ghost image.

I could not imagine all these could happen in a 5-star hotel. Nowadays, even a GBP20+ B&B in the middle of nowhere supplies a water boiler.

A practical tip: a taxi ride from hotel to La Marsa centre/traing station should cost only about TND1.5. If any taxi driver at/outside the hotel asks for TND5, just disregard him (had not seen a female driver) and pay no more than TND2. Also, many of these taxi drivers adjust their meters to charge more, so be careful with this.

I got a huge discount staying at this hotel so I gave a 3-rating. But if I had to pay a tariff of TND360 to stay there, I would have given a much lower rating.

If I visit Tunis again, I would not consider staying at this hotel.

A pleasant looking hotel with big entrance area in marble. Rooms are standard size and nothing special. decent enough bar area with bedouin tent area but performer not very good. Fine for a business stay but not much more. Breakfast was a crowded self service with tables not ready and items in short supply. Poor selection and mediocre quality.
