“Very good hotel but not quite 5 star”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Went for 7 nights stay in Sept 2013. We had a junior suite which was very spacious with a good view, sea view although a fair distance away, but none the less sea view. I dont like really soft pillows so sleep was not brilliant, but if you do fine. The room lacked finesse, no pillows on chairs, no fluffy towels, just plain, little things that can make all the difference. Getting sun beds and pools great, or go on beach for sun tan. Weather was very good just right really hot without being too hot with broken cloud to keep you from burning but get a good tan. The sea I found not inviting a bit rough and the sand you sank into like sinking sand not for me. The dining experience was ok food adequate, lunch time was a lottery for seating and food bit samey. Main diner was ok and asian restaurant was good, what it lacked was more waiter service. Bars the same the odd guy would go out his way to wait on you and so I tipped, that way they keep coming back to serve you otherwise its good old queuing and guess what foreigners don't Que!
I have to mention the animation team and in particular Fifi who was just brilliant guy, we didnt participate with activities just being lazy but alot did and you were not thought worse of for not doing so, but if you like to be cajoled into having fun with taking part then do it looked alot of laughs, then not just entertaining folks all day they also put on shows at night which ok not broadway but what do you expect! It was good light entertainment, and as usual Fifi at the heart of it, guy derserves a medal.
So overall certainly value for money, but if you want 5 star treatment then suggest you pay a little more money and try elsewhere, but would certainly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: we had junior suite, we like the extra room

Just spent a week at this hotel, returning on 29th September 2013. this is a good all round hotel with good facilities, two good sized pools with plenty of sun loungers, with a good beach close by.
The staff are very attentive and friendly and the rooms are kept very clean. The whole hotel and pool area is well kept up and tidy. the food is of a good quality, but the evening meals could do with some more variation. The Asian restaurant, in the hotel is well worth a visit.
The only problem that we encountered was that as we went in late September, they still had a heat wave, but the Air Conditioning had been turned off. after a few requests from a lot of the guests staying there is was turned back on, but at a very reduced rate.
Would we go back to this hotel again, yes we would as it was very convenient flying from Bournemouth, the flight times where good and the weather was excellent.

Room Tip: all rooms where good.We where on the top floor room 302 with a great sea view. Rooms 2,4, 6 and 8 on...

Just returned from 2 weeks at the Riu Marillia. We had a great holiday and would definately return to this hotel. The beach and pool area were always kept clean. The only thing that I would mention is the air conditioning was rubbish. We informed the Manager and reception on a few occassions but it never got looked at. Other people were also complaining but it never got sorted. It was really hot in the rooms at night. The Animation Team were very good, especially Sam. We did not like it when Fifa came round selling raffle tickets, as he made you feel very uncomfortable and made you feel like you could not say no. The food was really good and there was always something you could pick to eat. The Asian restaurant was really nice and we did eat there a few times. Unfortunately it closed on 30 September so we were unable to eat there our second week. The waiters were very friendly and were always there to help. All in all we had a great two weeks holiday and would say it was value for money. We met some lovely people and would recommend the hotel to anyone who would like to holiday in Tunisia.

Room Tip: Before we went to the Marillia I e-mailed the hotel and requested a room with a sea view. I mention...

I was unsure at first but the Management and Staff did all they could to make my stay enjoyable, the entertainers were also polite. I had to have the Dr called out and the treatment i received was also up to par the only point was that the dr said i was to have my meal in my room for that day, and i had to remind the the hotel of his instructions. my overall feelings of this holiday being that the food was Good the rooms were very clean I would stay there again I had 14 wonderful days

Just returned from 2 weeks at the Riu Marilla, Hammamet.
Hotel was good, but not a 4 star yet... need to iron out a few things.
Rooms good, had a lovely sea view even though we had not booked one.
Both pools were very clean but a touch on the cold side, not the hotel's fault.
The private part of beach was kept clean by the hotel, but further up it was full of rubbish.
We were lucky to see the sea crystal clear and like a mill pond for a couple of days, but after that the wind came up and seaweed appeared all over the beach and the sea was full of rubbish floating, plastic bags, bottle tops, string etc.
The hotel is kept very clean, maids came in every day, had to let the maid know when we needed the towels and sheets changed.
Food at breakfast was very good, lots of variety.
Lunchtime was the best, food is always being cooked fresh, again lots of variety.
Dinner was the worst, had to state which sitting you wanted for the duration of your holiday, either the early one or the late, so had to eat the same time every night, never had this before. There was alot of dishes to chose from but it was not hot, food is kept under the lights until the dishes are refilled which slowly got cold has there did not seem to be any heat to keep it hot.
The staff at dinner.... as soon as we sat down on our first night our waiter stated he does not get drinks only pours the water, and was very slow at clearing the plates between courses.
Once each week we were asked, at dinner to fill in a questionaire from the quality control team, this was the only time that you noticed the staff working hard in the buffet. They even kept looking over your shoulder as to what you were filling in, felt intimidated.
We went to the Asian restuarant 4 times which was very good, entirely different attitude from the staff here.
Both bars were very good except on several occasions they ran out of certain drinks.
The coffee machines kept breaking down during the day, they need to sort this out.
The biggest problem we faced was the non existence air conditioning, from our first night we had no air con in our room and as the holiday progressed none in any other rooms.
We reported this to the reception on our first morning, they checked it but it made no difference. Our second week all the air con was switched off, in the main buildings as well, we were told this is the norm at this time of year, but I think other people had complained and by the time we left air con was in the foyer and restuarants only. We had to sleep with the balcony door open all night to get relief from the heat.
Entertainment....... they need to sort this out. The team work very hard, especially Sam who was always very friendly, but Fifi is in your face all the time, telling you how good the shows are (I don't think!!!!) and selling his raffle tickets. It got to the point that we started to avoid him if we see him coming.
The surrounding area was a big disappointment it is very dirty, we went to the Marina one evening which was dark and full of empty shops, not at all like the other resorts we had visited previously.
So the only evening entertainment was the hotel show, they need to open the piano bar as an alternative. We were told this will open later in the year.
A couple of evenings there was a threat of rain and the outdoor bar was closed, even though there was cover. We did complain about this but was told it is the norm, but this did not help with the indoor bar overcrowded, smokey and no air con.
Neil the Thomson rep was there at the start of our holiday, he was okay if you booked the trips but did not help with any advice getting about on your own. We wondered what had happed to him at the end of our first week and was told he was ill, after that a new rep appeared and told us that he no longer worked for Thomson, so not sure what had happened to him.
Overhall we had a good holiday for the money that we paid, but this is by no means a 4 star and not what you would expect from a Riu hotel.

Room Tip: Check that your air con is working, we had 230 and 232 both no air con.

Returned from tunisia 15th September. Had a fantastic holiday .
Rooms are nice and clean , fresh and bright.
The hotel is nice with fantastic pools, the sea was rough but worm .
Staff are friendly and polite but not very attentive unless you are under 30 .
Ali served our table he was one of the few that was helpful all the time .
The rep has had mixed reviews , we been in our late 40s found him to be friendly and helpful a hard worker with a sense of humour. Try the rovers return we had a great sunday dinner , nice friendly even if it showed most football matches .

If you want a 4* hotel in Yasmine, this is a very good one. HOWEVER, if you want a 4* Riu Hotel, and have stayed in a Riu before, they haven't quite got there yet. We were aware that Riu have only just acquired this hotel when we booked, so didn't really expect it to be quite up to scratch. I would think that, given another twelve months, it will be up to standard, it just needs some "tweaking". Having said that, the food was excellent, cleanliness could not be faulted, rooms very nice and the lobby was very comfortable and looked brand new. The swimming pools were superb and loungers plentiful. We never had any problem getting four together, even if we had been out all the morning. The "tweaking" required is such things as the air con wasn't as efficient as it could be, the rooms we had were never cool enough. The restaurant air con was virtually none existent for most of our stay, making dinner an extremely uncomfortable and very quick affair! I also agree with the comments made by Jackie K regarding both the bars and the cocktails. The animation team tried very hard but were way too aggressive, constantly badgering us to join in everything. They just wouldn't leave us alone, even when we said no, we just wanted to relax. They were constantly "in our faces". We have stayed in Riu before and the animation team are always very visible, that's their job, but they don't normally actually hassle you to join the activities. Having said that, we were given to understand that they had been reduced by four due to lack of interest from guests so I guess the remaining five were probably fighting to keep their jobs. As I said at the beginning, a very good four star hotel, just not a very good four star Riu hotel yet. One last comment, which in no way reflects on the hotel, the sea was not very pleasant at all. There was so much rubbish in there that I certainly didn't want to swim, even just paddling was not too nice. Litter, plastic bags, bottles, anything and everything that could come out of a dustbin was in there. We went out on a catamaran and the guys on there told us that, since the revolution, Tunisians don't care any more and now just dump their rubbish! I would imagine that would run down the whole coast, not just Yasmine. It's very sad as we actually saw quite a few dolphins on our trip and, as we all know, this kind of rubbish is very bad for marine life. Despite my criticisms, we still had a lovely holiday and would not hesitate to go back - providing the air con was repaired!
