“Traditional!”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

We visited the medina in the old town and had a mini tour round. Very interesting buildings, temple, streets. Great view of the tower from the roof terrace of one of the shops. Some traditional crafts for sale - haggling interesting!

“Missed opportunity”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

Whilst in Hammamet we visited the Medina where we could have purchased a carpet very cheap which they would have handled the shipping and we could pay on delivery. Unfortunately we did not take this up as we were unsure, but later regretted we did not take the opportunity.

“scary but fun!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

At first it can seem quite intimidating, people quite in your face and pushy sales tactics - however the place itself is full of history and there are some beautiful things to be found amongst the tourist tat - all at a bargain price!

“much of the same”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

We visited both the new Medina at Yasmine ( very false) and the original in Hammamet. They were both touristy but we loved the original. The outside of the Medina was fantastic with a great job having been done with the preservation of the original brickwork. Unfortunately some of this was spoiled by the graffiti. The inside was just as I remembered it, Vibrant and colourful with the same pushy stallholders. Anyway the restaurant outside the Medina walls was fantastic with friendly staff, lovely drinks and clean tables (and toilets!!)

“Just average really”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

we visited the medina and were fairly bored by the experience. I was expecting it to be bigger than it was to be honest! Every seller sold the same product as the shop next door (you got sick of looking at the same thing in every shop)
The shop owners were also a little annoying! We started off politely saying "no thank you" by the end of the holiday we were ignoring them all. You get sick of hearing "ahh English, have a look make me happy, cheaper than Tesco, cheaper than Asda, cheaper than a packi shop (how rude)
Also, the people outside the Medina with the baby camel and desert fox will ask you if you would like to get you picture taken with them. Be aware that the price they quote you isn't the price you will pay. A lot of people were getting caught by this and the police had to be called on a couple of occasions.
If you do buy anything at the medina, stick to your guns with the price you are willing to pay. We bought our son a bag for 25 dinar, the seller was asking for 90 dinar. We also bought a cap for 12 dinar instead of 25. The fixed price shops are very cheap, and mostly cheaper than you will manage to haggle the price too so my advice would be to buy from the fixed price shops!
