“Excellent Resort”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Recently returned from the holiday Village Manar in Tunisia
My family and another family visited for two weeks, and we must admit, it was one of the best holidays we have ever had
The resort itself was brilliant.
Landscaped grounds, pools, water tubes, grass areas, several bars and restaurants dotted around the place, and even our own bar in the Manar 2 part of the resort.
The food was second to none, and we are fussy as recent visits to other HV resorts didn’t have the greatest foods...this place had lots of choice, and more-so , lots of fresh food cooked in front of you.
The entertainment team were excellent – Nate and his team, and we finally won the Russell the Brussell T-shirts after a long hard slog on stage numerous times plus other fun items round the pool on Charity day.

Felt safe letting our kids (2x8 yr olds, 1x7 yr old and 1x6 yr old) go off and get their own food at lunch times, and also go to the various pools on their own, as there was lots of security everywhere (people) as well as life guards all over the place
The beach was a stones throw away, with its own private area, loungers, umbrellas and of course, a bar. The sand was soft, the water was very warm,, and you don’t get hassled by the beach vendors

The local staff were really accommodating
We especially would like to say thanks to
Wael – on the Bar near the pools that also serves food. He was always smiling, and knew us by name (Paul and James bond  )
Bilel was excellent as our local barman in Manar 2, and couldn’t do enough for us
The comedy factor was provided by Charlie (barman) and also by Mohammed (The “omelette man” chef)
Would 100% return there, and highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you want a balcony, dont request the Kids Den rooms. Ask for a family room

After a four hour delay we finally arrived at the holiday village. Rooms okay not 5 star maybe 4 complex spotless pools and slides are great forr the kids and my 52 year old husband who loved the slides. Food gpod plenty of choice the cakes very yummy. The gym a let down no air con and equipment not up to date. The stone arena that everyone went down to at night bit lethal people falling breaking bones and getting bruised if you had a pram you could only sit at the bottpm, the entertainment for kids ok but when on far to long nowt for teenagers or adults only reps got really boring we stppped going. Pity no entertainment at hotel only a piano. A singer or something would be good or bingo as it was pitch black at the arena trying to play bingo. Spa good but needs supervising as kids run amok in there
Kids clubs good no queing up. Beach stunning .staff very helpful make sure you tip we gave our waiter ten dinar a night and he filled our table with lovely flowers everynight and had our drinks ready for us .

We have been to several other holiday villages, so knew what to expect re the entertainment etc. We have previously been to the Rhodes HV which is advertised as 5* and loved it there. As Tunisia is advertised as 5* we were expecting similar standards to Rhodes, how wrong were we! Don't get me wrong we had a good holiday and the food was very good, the staff were great, however, this is not a 5* hotel, in my opinion this is 3*+ due to the poor quality of the bedroom/bathroom and some of the general areas, for example where our sunbeds were it was originally grass but the grass has virtually all gone so it leaves you standing on dirt which gets the sunbeds etc dirty. The bathroom was filthy and I have submitted a complaint to first choice about the standard of the room. I understand that the hotel is being refurbished for 2014 so it will be a lot better then. The location of the hotel is poor, there is NOTHING to do outside of the hotel, so if you like to get out of hotel to look round shops etc then this is not the hotel for you! We will not be returning but did still manage to have a good time, despite being really disappointed with the quality for a supposed 5* hotel. Also the pool was closed several times during our stay for people pooing in the pools, at previous hotels the pools were closed for a good few hours if that happened but here they were only closed for 30 mins?!

This is our 5th Holiday Village after Egypt, Cypress, Rhodes and Turkey. We spent one week here with a single night away from the hotel on a two-day tour. Overall, we had a great time, the rooms were clean, great customer service from both local and UK staff, and there was a fantastic choice of excellent quality food. The weather was a little overcast, even cool, on a couple of days but the sun was obviously still coming through those clouds -- I should have re-applied more often than I did!

In a little more detail, some of the not-so-good...

Well the decor is starting to look a little tired. We heard a few rumours that the place is due for a face-lift in the next year or so and it obviously needs it. I can't be too specific here because there wasn't any single glaring problem, just a few bits and pieces, like loose tiles in the relax pool, a rather musty carpet in the corridor leading up to our room. Saying all this, our room -- a two bed apartment -- was in good condition and it was huge, incredibly good value for money.

Next up, I'm afraid that we didn't really rate the entertainment, with one notable exception, that being Nate who managed to stoke up all the tired set acts with some very funny, clever ad-libbing. Highlight: his sexy dance and the splits during a competition. You sir are a genius!

Holiday Village entertainment certainly seems to vary from one hotel to another and over the years we've seen some incredibly professional acts and some less so. We always love the chocolate dance. But I'm afraid we pretty much gave up on the entertainment in Tunisia, even with the boost from Nate. The bingo is always a major turn-off for us, we usually just go for a walk and come back later to see if anything interesting is happening, but it certainly seems popular with other holidaymakers. I guess we're in the minority here. I loved the chill-out area in Turkey. Perhaps there could be something similar at all the Holiday Villages for those people who don't like bingo and raffles?

The sun lounger situation around the main pools is identical to every other Holiday Village -- in fact everywhere that there are British holidaymakers. This is just Brit-abroad mentality and not the fault of the staff. I really don't know why they bother with the signs telling people not to place towels on loungers. Our advice: walk another 2 minutes and use the relax pool, there were free loungers there all day long. One morning we were up at 5am for a two-day tour away from the hotel and -- I kid you not! -- we saw at least half a dozen sleepy-looking men out and about placing towels on loungers. Get a life people, you're on holiday!

One last minor gripe. The Escape activities didn't seem that well organised. Not sure whether this was down to a lack of participants of the right age or a lack of organisation by staff, but our 13 year old wasn't particularly impressed.

The good...

So the food at Holiday Village hotels is always consistently excellent. This is probably the #1 reason that we've booked so many Holiday Village stays over the years. This Holiday Village also features an outside grill which is great, just like having a barbecue every night, though you might find your clothes smelling a little smokey the following morning (not that I minded that at all!). There were the usual long queues for the more British-orientated food, shorter queues for Mediterranean-style grub and local Tunisian dishes, so you could save yourself some standing in line time by cutting out chips for the week. Evening meals are a case of helping yourself from the buffet, though there's excellent waiter service for drinks. We only managed one visit to an a la carte restaurant, the Asian restaurant. It's right alongside the main restaurant and a little scruffy outside, but the food was of excellent quality and they were quick to provide chopsticks when asked. Ice cream available all afternoon at the snack bar by the relax pool and it never ran out. I'm assuming this was the same elsewhere on the resort?

We always seem to gravitate to the relax pool at a Holiday Village as we can't be bothered fighting over sun loungers. We easily managed to find 3 or 4 adjacent loungers every day at various times. The loungers were in decent enough condition. The pool was decent enough and not too crowded. The resident life guard Momo did a great job, very friendly, kept the place spotless (picking up cups etc) but he was also firm with the rules (no diving!). Good man!

So, I'm giving this a 4/5 rating, which feels a little generous. If I could give 3.5/5 I would, but I can't, and 3/5 seems stingy. This Holiday Village was excellent value for money, the food was fantastic, the pool was great, and the hotel served as a perfect base for a two-day tour away in the south of the country.

Room Tip: The two-bed apartment was huge. Incredible amount of space!

Have just returned from the Holiday Village Manar, holiday was fine but definitely not 5 star accommodation as described, more 3 star plus/4 star. Hotel was not tremendously clean, all glass doors that led to both receptions were dirty all the time with finger prints all over them. For those people who stayed in Manar 2, ajoining hotel, no reception, had to trapse back and forth to main receiption for any sort of assistance. Room was fine but facilities not great. Isolated in location so pretty much stuck on base unless you feel safe enough to venture out. Tunisian staff were lovely and very helpful. Entertainments team, fine for the first few days then got very tedius all day by the pool and then again all night just them entertaining, nothing cultural or different, so evenings, very young kids entertainment 8-9, then bingo at 9 - yippee!! then adult entertainment straight after, so what do the little ones do then? sit and listen to the entertainment sing ballards!! Had a variety of food, however, a lot of sickness, mainly 24 hour sickness. All inclusive, no food after 0930pm when dinner finishes, no late night snacks, beach bar only serves cheese or ham baguettes between 1030-1230 then no food, snack bar open up until 5pm, chips, pizza etc. Drinks, can only get cocktails in lobby bars, spirits only by pool bar and no spirits by beech bar except beer, not what I have come to expect from All inclusive. Yes hotel right on beech and apparently private beech, with a security chap or two running across from side to side stop locals from pitching up. From the beach you can walk straight up into hotel, not sure how safe this really is, as only 1 security guard at night. Not a bad holiday but plenty to pick at due to the rating given. If you have pool side room, you don't get any sleep from entertainment going on until 11pm then its an early start to save sunbeds. People were getting up at 5.30am!!!

Trip advisor

We travelled as 2 families of 4 with kids aged 6 to 11. We have also been to HV Turkey & Rhodes.

Where do I start?!

We had a standard family room in block Manar 2.
Manar 1 is the main building where all the amenities are, and Manar 2 is a separate block around 3 mins walk away adjacent to the activity pool.
The room itself was massive, more like a one-bed bedroom apartment, with a separate living area where the kids slept on sofa beds.
We were on the ground floor. We (me really) would have preferred a higher floor with better views, but I should have requested this at the time of booking I suppose.

The food is amazing here, probably the best we've ever had in an AI. The selection available is immense and its absolutely beyond me how anybody can find fault with the food here. The people who slate it in previous reviews should simply state they don't have varied tastes and decline to comment.

The staff are amazing and will do anything to help. I don't doubt part of their enthusiasm is to entice tips out of you. All I can say is that the tips go a long, long way here. At the end of the day, this is a skint country and these people could do with the extra brass.

The wifi quality is very good but only available in reception/ lobby bar area. Would be could if they can extend this to other areas since the resort is so big.

We did lots of water sports on the beach which are ridiculously cheap. 45 dinar (£18) on jet ski for 15 mins was very good. The kayaks were free to use all day. The sea water is very clear, and there are lots of small fish to look at so take your snorkels!

We didn't use the kids clubs because our children were just not bothered. We gave them the choice, but there was enough going on all day round the pool to satisfy them. It was quite sad to see parents bunging their kids into every session just so they could have time on their own. I'd love to know just how many of these kids 'really' wanted to go to the sessions as opposed to being 'made to'

Overall, This is a great resort with great facilities in a beautiful beach front location. Looking at the big picture, this is probably the best HV we've been to so far. Would I go back? No. Been there, done that. Bring on the next one!

Although saying that, they are planning a major refurb this winter and they'll be making some big changes including building swim up rooms.
I hope they don't hike the prices too much to pay for the refurb though.

Tips and hints
- there are loads of quirky tables suitable for 5 people in the restaurant which is normally an awkward number.

- Height restrictions have now changed for the water slides. Your child now has to be a minimum HEIGHT of 1100mm (43.5 inches) so get your tape measures out!

- Take a 3-5 gang extension cable for the room. This was invaluable because there's only one or two socket points in the room.

Hotel location brilliant, right on the beach. Our sea view room was clean, spacious and well adequate for our 11 night stay.
Hotel was clean and well cleaned throughout our stay.
Grounds tended to every day and very well maintained.
Plenty of food choice in the main restaurant that we didn't venture to the al a carte restaurants. Food prepared freshly in front of you. All lovely. No unnecessary queues for food.
Hotel staff very attentive and couldn't do enough for you.
Beach was beautiful and plenty of beds to go around even round the pools. People were still getting up early to put towels on beds? Why? There was enough to go round.
Great holiday, great hotel!!!!
We did the Sahara experience trip which was visiting 2 Star Wars sights. Long time on coach but a great well organised and informative trip. The camel ride and 4x4 in the desert was an experience we will never forget.
A great time had by all!!!!!
